Can I Use A Regular Grill For A Built

Outdoor kitchen build in 20 minutes! Using my old Weber gas grill.

Yes, it is possible to use a regular grill for a built-in, however, there are a few factors that you will need to assess before attempting to do so.

Some regular grills are designed with extending sides that can be used to store your foods or condiments when you are cooking. When they are not in use, they can then be folded. If this design applies to your grill you will need to remove them before installing it.

Also, if your grill is covered by a warranty it is important to check the terms of your policy as they will confirm whether your warranty is still going to be valid if you attempt to build in your regular grill.

Can I Build My Grill Into A Structure

The landscape of the American backyard has transformed over the years, and now more than ever, the popularity of the outdoor kitchen is on the rise. Rather than having a free-standing grill, many people prefer to build them into a structure.

So, can a Weber grill be built into a structure?

The answer is some Weber grills can, and some cannot. We make two models that are designed to be built-in.

Both of these models are available in propane or natural gas versions, and are meant to be used exclusively in built-in structures. The island structures in the photos are not included, and meant for visualization purposes only.

So, why shouldnt other Weber grills be built-in?

The answer is because special designing and testing go into making it possible for a grill to built-in, and there are ventilation concerns that need to be considered.

The Summit S-460 and S-660 are the only models that have had these issues addressed. If any other Weber model is built-in we do not know how it might behave, or if it will be safe to use. Its for these reasons that if you do choose to build-in other models the warranty on the grill is voided.

If youre looking for a built-in Weber model, the Summit S-460 and Summit S-660 are the way to go.

Burners And Heating Power

The burners of a built-in gas grill should be made of high-quality stainless steel. You dont want them to start cracking after a couple of years of use. The burners should also provide even heat across the grilling surface.

Having at least 3 individually controlled burners, preferably more, is required to create heat zones for indirect cooking. This is necessary when slow cooking large items like ribs and briskets.

Youll also need the grill to be able to heat up to 600 degrees plus with ease for proper searing.

BTUs and Heat Flux

The grilling power of gas grills is often measured in BTUs . One BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. While its important to have enough BTUs, this variable alone doesnt tell us much because.

Heat flux is a much better variable for telling if the grill actually has enough heating power because it also factors in the size of the grilling surface. A small grill doesnt require as many BTUs to get hot as a large one. The heat flux is calculated by dividing the BTUs of the grills main burners by the size of the main grilling area.

All models in this guide produce enough heat for the grill to get hot enough for searing in less than 10 minutes.

Is It True That Propane Burns Hotter Than Natural Gas

Weber 22 in. Performer Deluxe Black Charcoal Grill Built

Yes, it is true. As we mentioned earlier, one cubic foot of propane produces 2,516 BTUs when burned, while natural gas produces just 1,030 BTUs when the same amount is consumed.

This discrepancy has led to some pitmasters claiming that natural gas grills just dont get hot enough to properly sear. While this might have been true for earlier models, modern natural gas grills have overcome this issue by increasing the amount of gas released by their burners, thereby increasing the temperature.

A lot of high-end models, and most of the grills weve reviewed here today, also include an infrared high-temperature searing station. These searing stations present a more convenient solution to getting the perfect reverse sear than heating your entire grill up to a high temperature.

What To Look For In Built In Grill Buying Guides

When you are in the market in search of a drop-in or built-in gas grill, two crucial factors should be in your mind. First, the grill should be of a premium quality that provides satisfying outdoor experience but with the convenience of an indoor grill. Second, it should have a smooth built that will fit into your outdoor space.

Commercial-Grade stainless steel construction does not only provide the grill a polished finish but also the protection for the interior components. The non-stick grill grates are easy to clean and improve the heat distribution. Versatile grills often come with a searing burner and a rotisserie burner. The most versatile in our list is the Weber Summit S-460 grill because each of its burners has different temperature control.

There are additional features that come with a price. These features include the thermometer, back-lighted control knobs, drip tray, and halogen lights. Built in grills usually cost more than the stand-alone gas grills because they have better mechanisms and specialized construction. You should be able and willing to go beyond your budget.

If you are building a great outdoor kitchen, these type of grills are a serious investment. To put your mind at ease, make sure that you are getting a model that is backed by a lifetime warranty. However, some warranties only cover particular parts.

Does Weber Make A Built

Weber produces two grills that are designed to be built in and these are the Summit S-460 and the Summit S-660. Both of these grills are available in natural gas and propane varieties. These grills have been specially designed and incorporate the necessary ventilation elements that are required of a built-in grill.

Attempting to build in a Weber grill that is not intended for this purpose may lead to issues with your warranty and it will likely become void. As such, if you encounter any issues from this point forward, your warranty will no longer cover them.

The Best Charcoal Grill: 22 Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill

Top 5 Charcoal Grills in 2022

Weber has been making kettle grills for 70 years, and it shows, even in one of its more basic offerings, the 22″ Original Premium Kettle Charcoal Grill. This classic kettle grill is our top pick because it has everything a backyard griller needs: A durable porcelain-enameled body, a smooth top damper for nearly foolproof temperature control, a built-in thermometer, an enclosed ash catcher, and 363 square inches of steel cooking grates with the perfect girth for producing gorgeous grill marks. The grate is also hinged, which makes it easy to add more coals while cooking. The Premium is a step up from Webers bare-bones charcoal grill, which lacks the lid thermometer, hinged grill grate, ash catcher, and two tool hooks, and we think most users will find the upgrades to be well worth the $80 .

This grill hits the sweet spot size-wise too since its lightweight and fairly compact, but still has plenty of room to create both a high-heat and indirect-heat zone. The round grate has ample cooking space for an entire Thanksgiving turkey, at least 10 burgers , or a few beer-can chickens.

Cleaning this grill is easy thanks to Webers One-Touch cleaning systema lever-controlled tool that forces ashes down into the ash pan or catcher for easy cleanupand the enclosed ash catcher. Assembly is pretty straightforward and additional assistance is available through the BILT app. All Weber charcoal grills come with a limited 10-year warranty covering rust and burn-through of the body .

Why youll love it:

This is an excellent grill for the price, outshining a strangely more expensive but nearly identical model from the same brand. If you dont mind a smaller sized grill, this is an excellent option.

What we liked

  • Sturdy Construction: Hardy stainless-steel construction helps it weather the elements, and everything on this grill glides smoothly and easily. The interior is just as good, with proper channeling from the grill to the flame tamers to the grease trap, which is easy to remove and clean.
  • Burners: While it only has two, these 16, 000 BTU, U-shaped burners are excellent and evenly distribute heat across the two cooking surfaces this grill provides.
  • Ignition: Easy, single button, piezo ignition ensures that the grill starts up perfectly every time, and the grill is adjustable across all standard temperature ranges.
  • Warranty: This grill is provided with a 15-year warranty on all parts. While not as good as a lifetime, it is also better than the warranties with fine prints amounting to it not covering the most important pieces after 3 to 5 years.

What we didnt like

  • Size: As with the other American Grills model, 432 square inches is absolutely tiny for a built-in grill. I expect on average 550 square inches or more on a grill like this, in large part because that is enough space to support at least 3 different cooking surfaces. You lose a lot of versatility with only 2 burners, even if both of them are excellent.
