The Benefits Of The Pid Wifi Control Panel

As the name suggests the WiFi control panel featured on second-generation Woodwind pellet grills is WiFi-enabled. Hence, once the app is downloaded the grill temperature can be monitored and adjusted remotely from your phone. You can also control the smoke level from 1-10 while still maintaining the set temperature.

No SmokePro pellet grill currently features the PID WiFi controller. Therefore, if this is a feature you would find useful you should consider upgrading the Woodwind pellet grill range.

UPDATE: SmokePro grills now come with the Gen 2 WiFi controller which also offers PID functionality. You can also upgrade old SmokePro pellet grills with this new controller for use with the Camp Chef Connect app.

Camp Chef Smokepro Dlx Review & Breakdown

Priced less than other comparable grills, the SmokePro DLX is worth the investment. It lets you both grill and barbecue as well as smoke but can also bake, braise and roast, which makes it the centerpiece of your outdoor kitchen. The included meat probe slides easily into different types of meats and lets you keep an eye on their internal temperatures. It also has a large hopper that can hold up to 18 pounds of wood pellets and thats how the pellet grill works.

If you have more money and want a larger grill, you might go with the SmokePro SGX, which also comes from Camp Chef. With more than 4,600 cubic inches of cooking space and dual meat probes, this grill can cook more food than the DLX and lets you monitor the temperatures of two dishes at the same time. While the SGX is a nice grill, its also more expensive than the DLX.

Key Features Of The Camp Chef Smokepro Dlx Pellet Grill

Camp Chef SmokePro DLX 24 570

Large Hopper

Load up the hopper with up to 18 pounds of your favorite pellets for hours of smoking time.

How much you go through will depend on time and temperature, but for most jobs, you wont need to refill.

Automatic Auger

Youve got to love a self-feeding fire!

The auger speed controls the temperature by delivering the pellets in the right quantity. Its pretty impressive technology, actually, and it takes out a lot of the guesswork.

LED Temperature Readout

You wont have to guess where the needle is pointing on thermometer with a digital display. You can even read it in the dark if your smoking goes long.

PID Controller and Temperature Selection

Its straightforward to get the temperature you want. Just turn the dial to the number you desire, and the 2nd Gen PID controller will control the auger, pellet burn rate and fan to nail the desired temp. User-friendly much?

Temperature Probe

A probe-style thermometer is so useful, its almost hard to believe Camp Chef includes it in the box.

You dont want to slice open your meat to see if its done, nor do you want to leave the lid open for a long time while you stick in a thermometer.

Simply feed the probe through the special hole and plug into the main panel. Press a button to switch from internal to probe to find out if its ready!

Covered Smokestack

Pellet Purge System

Removing the pellets from some grills can be a pain, but not with the SmokePro DLX.

Camp Chef Pellet Grill Recommendations

In a perfect world, youd have weeks to research pellet grills, call up manufacturers, and test out various models. In reality, though, most of you just want to know which grill is best for your own backyard. Weve done the hard work and boiled Camp Chefs nine models down to the top three. While each Camp Chef Pellet Grill has its own advantages, be it price, functionality, or size. We feel the below models are going to generally be your best bet. If you keep scrolling down, however, we have done complete reviews for every pellet grill in the Camp Chef lineup.

We use 100% all-natural, virgin hardwood that comes from trees in the US to make our pellets. We DO NOT use any type of wood that may contain any chemicals, glue, or anything at all added. Camp Chef Smokepro Lux 36

Moving up from the DLX 24 to the LUX 36 the most significant difference is the increase in cooking area. The DLX 24 pellet grill offers a total of 570 square inches whereas the LUX 36 has a cooking area of 874 square inches. However, its not just an increase in size which differentiates the DLX and LUX models.

The LUX also features a bottom utility shelf. Whether you intend to use this self or not it provides the additional benefit of providing increased rigidity to the support legs when moving this larger/heavier grill around on its caster wheels. Talking about the caster wheels, on the LUX you also have the option to lock them to stop them swivelling when needed.

The main difference between the LUX 36 and the DLX 24 is the larger cooking area provided: Video Campchef.com

Other than the differences mentions above though the DLX 24 and LUX 36 are very similar. Both models use the same 18lb pellet hopper with purge shoot and the same control panel with meat probe sensor. The main reason you would want to consider upgrading from the DLX 24 to the LUX 36 is the additional 304 square inches of cooking space. As again, the LUX 36 does also not feature direct flame broiling. For that feature, you would have to opt for the most premium pellet grill in the SmokePro range, the SGX.

A To Z List Of The Best Bbq Wood Pellets

Camp Chef SmokePro DLX Pellet Grill Review 2021

A pellet grill/smoker is only as good as the BBQ pellets you put into it. The type/quality of the BBQ wood pellets you use will impact temperature performance and smoke flavour. There are many pellet flavours including Apple, Hickory, Mapel, Oak and Walnut to name but a few. However, some brands are hardwood blended pellets whereas others are 100% single wood species.

In this article, I provide details on over 20 brands of BBQ wood pellets, their range of flavours, whether they are 100% single wood species or hardwood blended pellets, their typical price and where they are available. I also provide tips on how to get the best deal when buying BBQ wood pellets and how to test pellet quality. Finally, I discuss the new kid on the block, charcoal pellets and their special attributes compared to all other hardwood BBQ pellets.

Stainless Steel Lids Stronger Support Legs And Larger Hopper Capacity

The Woodwind models are fitted with stainless steel grill lids and stainless steel chimney cowls. However, dont be under the impression that the Woodwind models feature stainless steel internal components as they currently dont.

Hence, the use of stainless steel on the Woodwind models is not that extensive. Therefore, while it has its benefits for making it easier to keep the lid clean I wouldnt place too much emphasis on it to choose a Woodwind model over a SmokePro model.

I will also note, the Woodwind models feature more sturdy legs which again has its benefits but I dont think its a significant difference. The same goes for the 22lb pellet hopper over the 18lb hoppers on some cheaper SmokePro models.

Should You Buy The Camp Chef Smokepro Dlx Pellet Grill

This is a remarkably versatile piece of equipment that will open up a ton of backyard cooking possibilities for anyone adventurous enough to take advantage.

Unlike many multi-purpose items that are the proverbial jack of all trades, master of none, this grill is good at just about everything. If you add on the sear box, you could readily replace both a smoker and a standard barbecue with this one unit.

Mind you, this level of quality and versatility doesnt come cheap. This is a very good quality smoker, and it shows.

Yes, its an investment, but it seems to be worth every penny. Yes, we wholeheartedly recommend this very cool smoker and grill. The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX will completely change your backyard cooking game.

What Can Be Improved

Overall, I was very impressed with the Woodwind.

The overall grilling experience has been a delight â however, there are a few things that I would change if I had the chance.

There seem to be a few problems with the temperature accuracy. It doesnt happen often, and it isnt a big deal however, I have noticed a slight variance with the temperature the grill is using and the one I set it to. It is still much more manageable than a charcoal grill.

Camp Chef SmokePro DLX 24 Pellet Grill

By: Max Good

This mid-sized pellet smoker is comparable in capacity to Traegers popular Lil Tex Elite, but much more sophisticated and easy to find for well below its list price. Its one of the few pellet smokers weve seen with an ash removal system. Although pellets dont create much ash, they need regular cleaning, which is a pain on most other designs because the greasy grates and drip pan must be removed to get at the fire pot where the pellets burn. Camp Chefs solution is a trap door under the fire pot. The bottom slides back letting ash drop into a removable cup, shown upper left. You still have to clean out the bottom of the smoke box periodically, but you dont have to worry about a clogged firepot that could impair the smokers performance.

Camp Chef Smokepro Dlx 24

Now I must admit when I first started to compare the specs between the XT 24 and the DLX 24 I was struggling to work out what the differences were between these two grill models. For instance, they both provide the same cooking area of 570 square inches over two racks. Furthermore, they both use the same controller with a single meat probe port. The more I looked at the grills I then noticed the two subtle differences between them.

The DLX 24 features a more rigid body compare to the XT 24 SmokePro pellet grill: Video Campchef.com

First, the support legs on the DLX 24 have been upgraded over the XT 24. The second difference is the pellet hopper. Does the DLX 24 hold more pellets? No, it still holds 18lbs. However, as you can see from the video above it does feature the pellet hopper cleanout/purge shoot.

Now, this may not seem like an important feature, but it is a nice feature to have. For instance, lets say youre in the middle of a cook and you want to change from say oak pellets to apple. Well with the pellet purge shoot its so much quicker/easier to do this compared to the XT 24. Again though, there is no direct flaming broiling possible with this grill.

Smokepro Vs Woodwind Similarities And Small Differences

When the Woodwind range was launched by Camp Chef in 2017 there was a clear difference in specifications between those models and the existing SmokePro range. For instance, the Woodwind models were the only ones to benefit from PID temperature control technology and a WiFi connection to the Camp Chef connect app.

However, now every model in the SmokePro range comes fitted with a version of the Gen 2 PID control panel which is also offered as a retrofit option to existing SmokePro owners. However, it is important to note that not all versions of the Gen 2 PID control panel come with WiFi/Camp Chef Connect support.

For example, as can be seen in the table above, while the SmokePro SE 24, XT 24 and DLX 24 all come with a Gen 2 PID control those panels do not have WiFi communication built-in, so cannot take advantage of the Camp Chef app.

Can I Switch My Camp Chef Product From Propane To Natural Gas

Each individual product is different. Most stoves , fire pits, flat top grills, propane smoke vaults can be converted. Please note that the Sidekick can, but the Sear Box cannot. We are happy to give conversions when applicable. However, the warranty description states that any altercations made, voids the manufacturer warranty.

The Camp Chef Smokerpro Pellet Grill Models

Camp Chef SmokePro DLX pellet grill vs Traeger Lil Tex elite 22

Below Im going to go through the Camp Chef Smoker Pro range in size order. However, its important to note the difference between the different models is not just the size of the cooking area. With the larger more premium units they also have more advanced control panels, larger pellet hoppers and the option for direct-flame grilling.

Meat Probe And Lid Thermometer

The grill also comes with a meat probe which allows you to check the inside temperature of the meat. All you need to do is stick it inside the meat and read the temperature from the dual-LED output monitor. The meat probe is excellent in helping determine if the meat is ready, but you also need the temperature of the cooking chamber itself, this is where the box lit thermometer comes in handy. Where the meat probe gives you temperatures of the inside of the meat, the box lid thermometer will show the temperature of the surroundings of the meat.

Setup: Simple Build And Standard Seasoning

Like most large standalone pellet smokers, the SmokePro DLX requires a bit of assembly. Upon unboxing all the pieces and parts, it seemed like an intimidating build, but we soon found its, arguably, easier than putting together the average piece of furniture from IKEA.

Included tools meant we technically didnt even need to own any to complete the project, but we did save a bit of time and hassle with a socket wrench set. After attaching the legs, handles, and the hopper/burner assembly, we basically just needed to place the remaining components inside the barrel.

Following the manuals instructions, we performed an initial Feed to get pellets into the auger and firebox. The process was straightforward but required a few button combinations and holds that werent obvious from looking at the buttons and dials. Next, we followed up with seasoning, grilling at high heat for around 45 minutes to burn off any manufacturing residue, and then we prepared the grill for smoking meat.

Pellet Hopper Drain Chute

The hopper is equipped with a drain to empty pellets if the grill will be stored for a long time or to change to a different wood. The drain chute is identical to the grease drain chute on the opposite side and one can hang a bucket on the chute to catch the pellets. The chute is opened via a pull out knob. Although there is a sliding vertical tab to hold the knob in place it cannot be effectively locked and easily popped open every time we removed the cover, sending pellets all over the deck. The problem was exacerbated by the tight fitting cover which was not designed to accommodate the large, optional Sear Box. We ended up taping the knob shut.

The main cooking grate is rolled steel coated with enamel. The upper rack, drip pan and heat deflector are made of long lasting stainless steel. There is a 20 pound capacity hopper.

Packaging is excellent with all parts held firmly in molded foam inserts. It comes almost fully assembled. All you need to do is attach the legs, side shelf, chimney and lid handle no wiring required. MSRP is $700, but its being offered by a variety of merchants for $600 and even less, which makes this a best buy for folks thinking about taking the plunge into pellet smoking. Check out the deals in our Where to Buy section below.

Three year warranty.
