How To Grill Corn In The Husk: Basic Steps

Ready to try this method? Grilling corn in the husk requires a bit of prep work, but its well worth it. Here are the two steps youll need to do that you might not think of before starting:

  • Youll need to remove the silk. Yes, its a little fussy! Remove the silk of the corn, then pull the husks back up. This makes eating it easier once it comes off the grill.
  • Soak the cobs for 20 minutes. The husks are going to get very blackened on the grill grates. So to prevent them from catching fire, youll need to soak them first!
  • Preheat the grill to medium high: thats 375 to 450 degrees.
  • Grill for 20 to 22 minutes. Turn them to get even blackening on the outside of the husk.

Again, the prep work is worth it! Grilling corn in the husk gives it a roasty, charred flavor but keeps it moist instead of drying out .

Putting A Little Char On Your Corn

Corn that has been grilled with the husk on will be moist, juicy, with just a hint of smoky flavor. If youre looking for a little more smoky flavor & color, heres how to accomplish that!

To develop a hot bed of embers, get a strong hot fire going that is capable of burning full sized logs. Get a few logs going and let them burn them until theyre starting to fall apart. My great aunt shared this way to prepare corn with me when I was younger. Ive been doing it for a few years now and well never fix corn on the cob a different way.

Its delicious, easy, and easy. Oh, I already said that? Well, I do like easy recipes!

To keep your husks from burning and/or catching fire on your grill, be sure to soak them. You can do this in a bowl, but I just stick them straight in the sink.

I just leave my corn soaking in the sink, but you could also do this in a plastic tub outside or anywhere you are grilling.

Be sure theyre good and wet so your corn doesnt dry out on the grill. Youll want to soak corn for grilling for 15 minutes before you put it on a hot grill.

Transfer your soaking wet corn cobs to the grill. I usually grill everything on Med-High. I put them right on the grill beside whatever else Im grilling.

To remove the silk before grilling, pull back but don’t remove the husk, pull off the silk, and smooth the husk back up. Or, simply peel the whole darn thing after grilling. Don’t be alarmed: The husk will char completely but the tender kernels inside will steam perfectly and the silk will come off cleanly.

For our grilled corn on the cob, we take it even a step further than most recipes. Instead of pulling off the husk, tie it back to form a makeshift handle for eating it! This makes the messy job of eating corn on the cob a breeze. You dont have to do the tie-off method: you can also simply husk the corn. But its a fun feature when you have the time! Here are a few tips for this method:

  • Be patient! This method takes a little longer, but its worth it. It takes about 15 minutes for 8 cobs of corn.
  • Start with the outer-most leaf. Pull down the outer-most leaf first. Then keep pulling down one leaf at a time, gradually working your way around the corn.
  • Cracks are ok. You may notice some leaves crack when you pull them back: thats completely ok! Just keep pulling the remaining leaves it doesnt have to be perfect.

How To Grill Fresh Corn On The Cob

Start by heating your grill to around 375°F. Once your grill is to temperature, take the corn in the husk and put it directly over the coals or burner. Cover the grill and rotate the corn every 5 minutes. The husk will create a barrier between the corn and the heat, protecting the kernels while also steaming the corn inside the husk.

After 20 minutes of grilling in the husk, unwrap the corn from the husk and place the cob back on the direct heat for 5 minutes or until you have several charred kernels on each side. If you would like to pull the corn off after 20 minutes without grilling it out of the husk, thats fine too. Either way, you end up with a crisp, sweet flavor that everyone will enjoy.

Grilling frozen corn on the cob is a great way to have corn all year long! It will keep in the freezer for several months.

Corn that has been frozen is partially cooked , so you shouldnt overcook it. Wrap each cob in aluminum foil and place on the grill, turning every few minutes for 10 minutes or until heated through.

How To Remove Corn From The Cob After Grilling

Now that your corn is grilled, you can eat it off the cob or you can remove the kernels to use it in other recipes like Fresh Sweet Corn Salad.

1. To cut kernels off the cob, stand the ear of corn upright. Holding the top of the cob with one hand, position your knife against the cob at the top and cut downward with one stroke.
