We are huge salmon fans at my house, and this Soy Sauce and Brown Sugar Grilled Salmon is such a simple way to prepare fish, and my kids absolutely love it!
Believe it or not, we first tried this recipe for a salmon at a neighborhood block party, and just had to ask our friends from across the street for the recipe. That was almost 15 years ago, and this is still one of our favorite ways to prepare salmon.

Mistakes To Avoid When Preparing Salmon
Leaving the Pin Bones In It
Pin bones are hard to spot physically until they get stuck in ones throat. To prevent this scenario, its worth taking a few extra minutes to run your hands over the fillet to locate and gently remove them before cooking.
Tweezers come in handy in helping you remove the pins. Or better yet, if you plan to buy fresh salmon, ask your fishmonger to remove the pin bones for you.
Removing the salmon skin before cooking .
If youre poaching salmon, then yes, its okay to go ahead and remove the skin this is your one exception. Otherwise, if youre baking, roasting, broiling, pan-searing, or grilling, that tough, fatty skin is one of the best protection against overcooking.
Leaving the fish in the heat for too long.
Make this error and the telltale signs will be in your face the super-fishy aroma, dry, flaky texture, and white albumen oozing out the sides. Overcooked simply isnt enjoyable, but the good news is that you can easily avoid it.
Cooking the fish skin-side up.
It doesnt matter how you place the fish in the pan, right? Wrong! This matters big time and can be the difference between a well-cooked and overcooked piece of fish.
Whether youre pan-searing, roasting, or grilling, always start by cooking the salmon skin-side down. The skin works to protect the more delicate flesh from overcooking. And depending on the cooking method, most, if not all, of the cooking will happen this way.

Tips For Grilling Salmon
- Grease your grill griddle well with olive oil before turning on the grill. Carefully, apply a fresh coat of olive oil over the griddle again right before adding on the salmon. This helps keep the salmon from sticking to the grill!
- Start skin side down. Grilling your salmon skin side down allows your skin to achieve a beautiful crispy finish. Grilling your salmon skin side down also helps retain more fluid since the skin acts as a barrier which means juicer salmon!
- Grill skin side down for 4 minutes. Before flipping, check for resistance. Once your salmon is ready to flip, it should no longer be sticking to your grill. If the salmon is still sticking to your grill, let it cook an extra minute. Be sure to NOT try flipping or even moving your salmon before the 4 minutes are up, unless you have a very thin cut of salmon. You will know its time to flip your salmon when the lighter color that occurs with cooking salmon reaches the halfway mark of the center of the salmon.
- Grill only 2-3 minutes on the flesh side down. Once youve grilled your skin side down and have flipped it the salmon will cook much quicker skin side down.
Wild Vs Farmed Salmon
As a rule, Pacific salmon is wild and Atlantic salmon is farmed. Its important to note, however, that Atlantic refers to the variety of salmonthe species known as Salmo salarnot just the region, because Atlantic salmon is now farmed all over the world.
How does all this relate to color? Well, generally, wild salmon is darker in color than farmed salmon.
Wild salmon get their pink color from the food they eat: shrimp or krill, which contain pigments called carotenoids. The salmon eat the carotenoids and store them in their muscles.
The color in farmed salmon, on the other hand, is not naturally occurring. Farmed salmon is generally lighter pink than the deeper reds of wild salmon, but their color is not naturally occurring. Farmers actually add a carotenoid-derived red pigment called astaxanthin to the salmons feed to turn them pink.
What do farmed salmon eat, then, if not the crustaceans of their Pacific counterparts? A delicious diet of things like soybean meal or canola meal, with the carotenoid added in.
Farmed fish is also typically fattier and may contain wavy, white marbling, which adds to the overall lighter color.

Sweet & Spicy Brown Sugar Salmon Rub Recipe

This Simple Brown Sugar Grilled Salmon only takes a few ingredients and comes together in a jiffy, but it tastes gourmet and fits into any THM fuel type! Now that spring is definitely here, Im getting into the grilling mood. Grilled meats just have an extra depth of flavor, plus grilling is a really quick cooking method and doesnt create many dishes to wash.
This particular salmon recipe is very simple. No previous marinating is needed you simply need to rub the seasoned coconut oil over the salmon filets and fire up the grill! Since the amount of coconut oil used is so small when spread over several servings, this recipe actually fits the THM Fuel Pull category and can be used with any meal type.

1 1/2 lbs Salmon Fillets1/3 Cup Soy SauceGarlic Powder to tasteSalt to taste
First things first, we need to season the salmon fillets. So, take your fillets and sprinkle on a bit of the lemon pepper, garlic powder, and salt. Dont over do it, just lightly coat them.
Once that is complete get yourself a small mixing bowl and combine the brown sugar, soy sauce, vegetable oil, and water. You will want to mix this until all of the brown sugar is dissolved.
Put your salmon fillets into a large resealable storage bag and pour in the brown sugar, soy sauce mixture. Seal the bag and turn a few times to coat all the fillets well. Put the bag in the refrigerator and let it marinate for at the very least 30 minutes. I let it marinate for 2 hours. You are going to get better flavor if you can let it go for a couple hours.
Once your salmon fillets are done marinading, preheat your gas or charcoal grill for direct grilling over medium heat.
If youve grilled fish before, you know it has a tendency to stick. So, you are going to want to lightly oil the grill grates with a bit of canola oil. Better yet you can grill the salmon on some cedar planks, this will solve the sticking issue, plus it adds a great smoky flavor to your salmon.
When it is done, remove it from the grill and serve. This salmon turns out amazing.

So you dont HAVE to grill this salmon recipe on a cedar plank But its certainly a fun and different way to cook fish, as well as being one of the easiest ways to prepare it. My kids were so curious to try it!
Be sure to use an untreated cedar plank for grilling. Ive seen them on clearance at almost all of the grocery and hardware stores Ive visited lately, so this is the perfect time of year to give it a try for cheap.
