HOW TO GRILL SALMON with Garlic Lime Butter

Cooking salmon in foil requires medium heat and a somewhat prolonged time. The ideal temperature to cook salmon in foil is around 375 degrees F. Preheat the grill to the said temperature, close the lid, and allow the salmon to cook for around 14-18 minutes.

The 14-18 minute cooking time is based on one-inch thick pieces of salmon. If your salmon fillets are more than one inch thick, you may need more time to cook your fish to perfection.

What Type Of Salmon To Use:

You can use any type of salmon! Just be sure if youre using salmon that was previously frozen that it is completely thawed before you grill it.

Atlantic salmon, king salmon, choho salmon, and sockeye salmon are all amazing. I personally prefer King salmon or Atlantic salmon because theyre fattier and therefore more flavorful and tender.

When Do I Know My Salmon Is Ready To Come Off The Grill

Your salmon steaks should be pink and somewhat translucent before you attempt to take them off the grill. You can also put a spatula underneath one steak and lift it slightly. Is it holding itself together well? If so, its a sign that its ready to come off. If the fish is still falling apart, then its probably not cooked enough yet.

Salmon will continue cooking for a few minutes after you pull it from the grill, just like steak does. Youll want to take it off the grill before its completely done to avoid cooking it too much. The final cooked temperature of salmon and other fish, according to the United States Department of Agriculture , is 145 degrees Fahrenheit. So, you should remove the grilled salmon when it reaches about 125-130-degrees. Allow it to rest for another five minutes before rechecking the temperature with a digital meat thermometer to see if it reaches 145 degrees.

Place Half Of The Herbs And Citrus On The Foil

  • Most often, I do a simple grilled salmon: a few sprigs of herbs and lemon slices. I like dill, but you can use any mix of fresh herbs and citrus that you like.
  • If you use a stronger herb like rosemary or dill, be more sparing on the herbs. Herbs like parsley or cilantro are more delicate, so you can be more generous.
  • For citrus, use lemon, lime, or orange . Of these, lime is the strongest.
  • Of course, you dont have to use lemon and herbsyou can use salmon thats rested in your favorite marinade, or a different blend of herbs and seasonings.

Do You Grill Salmon With Lid Open Or Closed

How to Grill Salmon Steaks and Fillets | Food Network

When grilling salmon, it is important to keep the lid open. This will allow for even heat distribution and prevent the salmon from steaming instead of grilling, which can cause it to become overcooked.

In addition, keeping the lid open will allow you to monitor the salmon more closely and adjust the heat accordingly to prevent it from burning.

Foil Pack Grilled Salmon With Lemony Asparagus

Grilling fish can be a totally daunting process. Worrying about cooking it correctly and not tearing apart the delicate fillets can bring unnecessary stress to your cookout. With addition of asparagus, these foil packs make grilling a salmon dinner a breeze. Cooking the packs over high heat will help to sear the fish while generating enough steam to fully cook the salmon and the asparagus. Your salmon will cook slightly faster if your pieces are thinner, but you can check for doneness by piercing a sharp knife into the fish in the foil. If the fish is flaking and light pink then youll know your salmon is done.

You could serve these right out of the foil or you could use a bit more foil and make some Campfire Potatoes or make some simple grilled corn.

Do You Cook Salmon On Both Sides

Whether you cook salmon on both sides is really about personal preference. When grilling salmon with skin, always start with the fillets skin-side down and theres no need to flip. The skin is more durable than the flesh and can withstand more time on the hot surface of the grill without overcooking while protecting the tender flesh from the direct heat of the grill.

Does Salmon Take Longer In Foil

Best Grilled Salmon Recipe and Marinade

Yes, and for some reason. Salmon in foil needs more time to cook because, in this case, your fish cooks over indirect infrared heat. Aluminum foil doesnt let most of the convectional heat pass through. As a result of indirect infrared cooking, your salmons sealed juices dont escape and are retained in the fillets. Salmon is more yummy and delectable when cooked in foil.

What Temperature Should You Grill Salmon

Direct medium-high heat is the best for temperature grilling salmon. Grilling the salmon at a higher temperature allows the salmon to get a nice crust on the outside, without cooking the middle more than you like.

One way to test that your grill is the right temperature is to hold your hand 5 inches above the grill. You should be able to hold your hand there for just 3 to 4 seconds before it gets too hot. This temperature will create the bottom crust that is necessary to turn the fish without having it stick to the grill.

Here Are Some Of Our Favorite Techniques For Grilling Salmon

Kabobs: Cut your salmon into one to one and a half inch cubes and marinate for 30 minutes to an hour. Thread marinated salmon and veggies onto skewers and arrange salmon kabobs on hot grill grates. Close the lid and cook for three to four minutes per side until theyre opaque, flaky and tender.

Cedar Plank: Cedar planks insulate delicate fish from the direct heat of the grill, allowing it to steam gently in the heat of the grill, staying incredibly tender and moist. It picks up smoky flavors from the grill and woodsy flavors from the cedar, along with the liquid you soak the planks in.

Grilling Basket: Keep your salmon from falling through the cracks with a non-stick grilling basket that has a locking lid. Place salmon in the basket and set the basket on top of the grates. When its time to flip, you can flip the grilling basket with worrying about your fish falling apart.

Foil: Grilling salmon in foil helps to protect your salmon from the intense flames of the grill while still providing that great chargrilled flavor you want. Place the fish in the center of a sheet of foil and add seasoning. Fold the foil over the top and mold the foil into a sealed packet. Set it on the grill grates and cook over indirect heat for 10-12 minutes. After letting it rest for five minutes, open carefully to avoid hot steam as it escapes the packet.

How To Grill Salmon On A Pellet Grill

Theres no one recipe you should use to grill your salmon, but those tested by us are likely to get you the best results. After your pellet grill has reached optimal temperature, place the salmon skin-side down directly on the grill grates.

Some people like their grilled salmon without grill marks or may choose to brush the fish with a butter sauce before cooking. In these cases, putting the fish on a baking sheet before grilling like in this Garlic Salmon recipe works best. If you dont have a skin to keep the fish together, the baking sheet is a good idea to keep the fish from falling through the grate as it cooks.

    Dont Overcook Your Salmon

Even though you are cooking with steam, you still want to avoid overcooking the salmon. Medium rare salmon is best for fresh salmon. Cooking it past that point just dries it out and makes the texture far less appetizing.

If you are cooking one inch thick bone-in fillets, then you can expect it to be done in 15 to 20 minutes at about 350 to 375 degrees f. If you are doing a thin slice of the tail end, a half-inch or less thick, then it will be about half that.

Salmon cooks quickly. The one thing about foil tenting it you cant see or test easily for doneness. So you have to trust in time and temperature to do the job.

When it is getting close you CAN temp it through the foil, but thatll poke a hole and let some of the steam escape.

    How To Grill Salmon

I told you, this is a basics recipe so youll need minimal ingredients to make this salmon.

    • Salmon Fillet: I like to buy a salmon fillet with skin on and then cut my own portions but to make it easier you can buy them pre-cut. Either way make sure they have skin on.
    • Tasteless Oil: Oils that are tasteless and can handle high heat are key. Avocado oil is what I normally use but peanut oil, grapeseed oil or vegetable oil would do.
    • Salt & Pepper: These are must to anything you make.
    • Grilling Utensils: I love using my fish spatula or tongs to flip so I dont break the salmon up when I flip.
