Nomad Grill And Smoker Review

A Briefcase Grill You Can Count On

Nomad Grill and Smoker – Tested and Reviewed!

Portable charcoal grills will invariably leave a mess at your campsite or in your trunk. The lids dont stay on and the ash can get everywhere.

The beauty of the briefcase design of the Nomad is that it simply unfolds for cooking and folds up when you are done, keeping any extra ash or dirt locked tight until you can really clean the grill again.

The grill grate stays in place and the tools can be safely transported inside.

A strong handle and burly latches ensure that the NOMAD is ready for transport and you wont have any accidental openings that could create a huge mess.

The NOMAD is hefty at 28-pounds due to its heavy-duty diecast aluminum cookboxes, but that weight contributes to the NOMAD creating a hot and even heat source. The grill is still small enough to easily transport in the trunk of your car, bed or your truck, or even strapped to your bike or motorcycle.

For the tailgate party, balcony, beach, back country hike, cattle drive, Winnebago trip, or on your yacht, you need a portable grill.

When shopping for a portable, the same rules apply as when you are shopping for other grills. You need to consider price, temperature control, ease of cleanup, ability to smoke foods, high heat, durability, safety, and, of course, size and weight.

Many of the small units dont have lids. Try to get one with a cover for the best temperature control and to prevent burning thicker meats. Try to get enough surface area so you can set up for 2-zone cooking.

When out and about, I usually look for convenience, and because a small bottle of propane will last a long time and its a heckuva lot lighter than charcoal, my favorite portable is a lightweight Weber 1520 Gas Go-Anywhere Gas Grill. But by far, my favorite portable of all is the Cook-Air. It burns only wood!

There are many options, from throwaways, to tried and true Hibachis, to some pretty snazzy rigs. We have not had a chance to work with many of them, so this list will certainly grow.

Cast & Cambered Grates

Aluminum unibody cook boxes house the stainless steel magnetic grates. Thats right folks, the grates in this grill will stay in place during transport and while opening and closing the grill. This is a clever feature.

The Nomad Grill Smoker is outfitted with cast and cambered grates, which help to evenly heat your food and prevent it from sticking. This means that these grates will outlast your average grates and also are cambered to push food away from the coals and add extra coal clearance which is, in our opinion, another clever feature.

One of the biggest issues with small portable grills is that their size puts the food close to the coals or fire, which makes it easy to burn food.

Cleaning The Nomad Is It Easy

Clearly, the designers have carefully considered every possible angle when creating this superb product, and cleaning is no different.

With many other pellet-style designs, the risk of spilling hot ash on yourself or the grass when cleaning is real.

With this charcoal grill, cleaning out the ash is as easy as using the grill itself!

Firstly, the gasket-free seal design allows the ashes to be contained in the unit until you get home and safely dump them.

Even if the case is inside the truck, no ashes will spill as it seals and locks everything inside.

Or, if you are camping in for the night, you can allow the grill to snuff the coals and cool off by shutting the vents. Once you can safely handle it, you open it and remove any solid charcoal pieces left over.

Then you can use a hand whisk to brush the ashes out from the deep cook box or even use a handheld vacuum to suck all the ashes out.

The grates and box can then be wiped with a damp cloth and left to dry completely. It doesnt get much easier than that!

Can You Use Regular Charcoal In A Nomad Grill

Yes, you can use regular charcoal in a Nomad grill. However, it is not recommended as it will not produce the same results as using Nomad charcoal. Nomad charcoal is specifically designed to provide the perfect amount of heat and flavor for your food. It also burns cleaner and produces less ash than regular charcoal, making it easier to clean up after your meal.

Nomad Grill Review: Conclusions

The NOMAD Grill and Smoker is a testament to industrial design, durability, and quality. Its a packable grill with tech, including SurfaceSafe, that puts it into a class of its own.

But if you dont appreciate slowing down and engaging with the process of grilling, this may not be the unit for you. It demands patience and proper procedures compared to other modern options.

And then theres the price. An MSRP of $599 puts it in the financial realm of a full-size pellet grill.

But if you value portability, impeccable design, and outstanding durability, then I feel the NOMAD Grill and Smoker is the highest-quality portable grill in existence.
