How Long Do You Cook Salmon On The Grill

Grilled Salmon marinated in Soy Sauce and Brown Sugar….Its Delicious!
  • A large piece of salmon like the one I grilled in these photos will take around 15-20 minutes on a HOT grill. Or the same amount of time in the oven if you are baking it.
  • Smaller salmon fillets might take a little less time, around 10-15 minutes. Either way, resist the temptation to open the foil packet while the salmon is cooking to see if it is done.
  • Again though, dont over cook the salmon! Salmon is best when it is juicy and tender, and cooking it too long dries it out and can easily ruin a beautiful piece of fish.

When the salmon is done, slice it into individual portions for your family. The leftovers are wonderful scrambled into eggs , added to pasta or used in a salad the next day.

We love serving fish or seafood at least once a week at our house! Some of our other favorite seafood recipes are Pan Seared Scallops, Easy Pan Fried Trout, and Easy Grilled Shrimp Skewers!

It’s been a while since I shared this recipe for garam masala salmon steaks on here, which is surprising since we eat salmon often at our house. I love to pan-sear individual fillets in my cast-iron skillet, or cook it in the oven as a sheet pan meal.

But one of my favorite methods for preparing salmon is wrapping it in foil and grilling or baking it. And this soy brown sugar salmon that is perfect for the summer grilling season is one of the best grilled salmon recipes ever.

I distinctly remember the first time I ever had salmon cooked on the grill in foil. It was at a family reunion in southern Utah when I was in high school and it was the most delicious, flavorful salmon I had ever eaten.

I’m positive I was the kid going back for second and third helpings, eating way more than my fair share of that delicious grilled fish.

The hardest part is just letting the salmon marinate for a couple of hours before grilling it.

How To Make Salmon On The Grill

  • Once your salmon has the bones and the scales removed, dry them with paper towels. You want dried salmon on the outside so the seasonings and marinade adhere to the salmon.
  • Cut the salmon into 3 inch portions for the perfect serving size.
  • For an easy clean up, its best to dump your ingredients into a large Ziploc bag, remove the air, and gently rub the salmon with the brown sugar marinade.
  • Let your salmon sit for 10-15 minutes while you preheat and oil the grill.
  • Once your salmon has marinated and your grill has preheated over medium heat, its time to grill it.

Bake Or Pan Fry Salmon Which Is Better

I usually bake mine. Its wonderful both ways. But it all boils down to what you want. If you want to have it easy then baking is your best option. If you want it crispy then pan-frying is better.

For optimal tender, flaky moistness, brush fillets with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper, and bake until just slightly under-done and let rest under foil to finish cooking.

Mistakes To Avoid When Preparing Salmon

Marinade

Leaving the Pin Bones In It

Pin bones are hard to spot physically until they get stuck in ones throat. To prevent this scenario, its worth taking a few extra minutes to run your hands over the fillet to locate and gently remove them before cooking.

Tweezers come in handy in helping you remove the pins. Or better yet, if you plan to buy fresh salmon, ask your fishmonger to remove the pin bones for you.

Removing the salmon skin before cooking .

If youre poaching salmon, then yes, its okay to go ahead and remove the skin this is your one exception. Otherwise, if youre baking, roasting, broiling, pan-searing, or grilling, that tough, fatty skin is one of the best protection against overcooking.

Leaving the fish in the heat for too long.

Make this error and the telltale signs will be in your face the super-fishy aroma, dry, flaky texture, and white albumen oozing out the sides. Overcooked simply isnt enjoyable, but the good news is that you can easily avoid it.

Cooking the fish skin-side up.

It doesnt matter how you place the fish in the pan, right? Wrong! This matters big time and can be the difference between a well-cooked and overcooked piece of fish.

Whether youre pan-searing, roasting, or grilling, always start by cooking the salmon skin-side down. The skin works to protect the more delicate flesh from overcooking. And depending on the cooking method, most, if not all, of the cooking will happen this way.

How To Make Easy One

Oven-baked salmon turns tender, moist, and soft in the middle. Add our brown sugar spice rub, and the outside becomes lightly caramelized and ultra-flavorful.

The green beans taste amazing, too. We season them with salt and pepper, but since they are on the same pan as the salmon, they mingle with the juices and fat released by the fish. Delicious!

The spice rub we use adds lots of flavor. Heres what we use to make it:

  • Brown sugar adds sweetness, and it lightly caramelizes in the oven. You dont need lots of it, though. 1 tablespoon for four large fillets is plenty.
  • Salt seasons the salmon and makes it taste amazing.
  • Lemon zest adds a pop of flavor. We use our microplane to zest the lemon. You can then cut the zested lemon into wedges and serve it with the baked salmon. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice just before serving is a must.
  • Smoked paprika adds a smokey-sweet flavor to the rub. It also adds color. For a spicier rub, try chipotle powder instead.

Weve already protested our love of baking salmon and have shared a few variations. This butter baked salmon is mouthwatering, and our classic lemon and dill baked salmon never fails. We love both of those recipes, but weve never shared a salmon recipe as easy as this one.

  • Step one, rub our simple spice blend onto salmon fillets.
  • Step two, add the salmon and veggies tossed with olive oil, salt, and pepper to a sheet pan.
  • Step three, bake until the salmon is cooked through.
  • Step four, serve with lemon wedges and enjoy!

Place Salmon On Preheated Grill

Place salmon on the preheated grill, and discard marinade. Cook salmon for 6 to 8 minutes per side, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.

The easiest way to see if your salmon has finished cooking is to gently press down on the top of the fillet with a fork or your finger. If the flesh of the salmon flakesmeaning, it separates easily along the white lines that run across the fillet its finished cooking.

How To Grill Salmon In Foil

FAST Brown Sugar Smoked Salmon Recipe – Easy Salmon Recipe – Backyard Texas Barbecue
  • I like to do one large piece of salmon when I’m making this for my family, but you can use salmon fillets if you prefer.
  • After making your super simple soy brown sugar salmon marinade and letting the salmon marinate for 1-2 hours, use heavy-duty aluminum foil to wrap the salmon tightly. I place the salmon in the middle of the foil, bring the long sides up, then fold them two or three times down over themselves, repeating on the shorter ends, to create a sealed packet so nothing can get out.
  • Make sure the grill is heated all the way before placing the wrapped salmon over indirect heat .
  • Close the grill lid and let the salmon cook until opaque through the center, being careful not to overcook the salmon. It only takes about 15 minutes for the salmon to cook on the grill this way.
  • This last step is optional but if you want gorgeous grill marks on your salmon, just before the salmon is done when it is still a little bit darker pink in the center, unwrap the salmon from the foil and brush the side of the grill over direct heat with a little oil, then flip the salmon over and grill for 2-3 minutes to finish the salmon and get those nice grill marks. I always make sure to have two large spatulas and my serving plate handy so I can transfer the entire piece of salmon over as soon as it is done.

Preparing My First Soy Sauce And Brown Sugar Salmon Marinade

When I made this Soy Sauce and Brown Sugar Salmon Marinade, I was a little disappointed when I opened the foil packet after baking and could understand wanting to grill it. It was sort of pale and icky looking.

It kind of baffled me because the pin said to wrap it in foil but the salmon in the picture had grill marks. Maybe it was grilled after baking? Then I flipped the salmon over and found that each slice had a beautifully caramelized crust on the bottom.

The time for baking depends on how big a slice of salmon you are using. My whole family liked it and felt there was not enough. So next time, I will have made bigger slices and MORE of them!

The original pin is from allrecipes.com and calls for grilling. Baking it in a foil packet is an idea that came from one of the comments. I am confident it would be delicious either way.

How Long To Bake Salmon And How To Tell Its Done

I know you dont want to read this, but the time it takes to cook salmon depends on a few things. First, what type of salmon do you have? Atlantic or King salmon are often thicker and fattier than Pacific Sockeye or Coho. The thickness will change the cook time quite a bit.

In our recipe, we use a 400-degree Fahrenheit oven, which is a higher temperature compared to the other salmon recipes on the blog. . The higher temperature quickens the cooking time and helps to add some color to the veggies on the pan.

A 1-inch thick, middle cut fillet of salmon takes 10 to 15 minutes. For thinner or end pieces, check the salmon a bit earlier. For thicker fillets, you may need an additional 5 to 10 minutes of bake time.

Your best bet for checking if salmon is cooked is a thermometer we cook salmon to 125 degrees F, which means it will be soft, tender, and slightly pink in the center. The texture at this temperature is much better than when cooked to a higher temperature.

For a visual cue, look for the flesh to be somewhat opaque. Also, when inserting a knife into the salmon, it should slide through easily.

Note that the USDA recommends cooking salmon to 145 degrees F. Interestingly enough, Cooks Illustrated suggests that the ideal internal temperature of salmon is 120 degrees F. Everyone has an opinion on this one, but for now, we are sticking to 125 degrees F.
