How to Grill Salmon in Tin Foil : BBQ Grilling Tips

The assembly steps were incredibly easy. Right? You can even do that in advance and leave the salmon in the fridge, until youre ready to cook dinner.

Then, once youre ready, light the grill to medium heat . Simply slide the fish-topped pieces of foil right onto the grill.

Itll only take about 10 minutes for the salmon to cook. The internal temp goal is 145F degrees. When you start to see white liquid start to seep out of the salmon, youll know youre getting close.

Note: the thinner portions of the fillet will cook more quickly than the thicker end. Thats why I always double check to make sure it reaches that USDA safe zone of 145F degrees.

Thats all there is to it. You can slide these babies right over to the dinner table for an incredible presentation. I like to hit them with a little melted butter, a pinch of cayenne and some flaked sea salt, just to finish them off.

This method works on any grill or in the oven. Its especially great at campgrounds or community picnic areas, when youre not 100% sure about the cleanliness of the grill. The Reynolds Wrap® Non-Stick Foil will protect your food, and it makes cleanup as easy as this recipe.

The internal temperature for salmon is between 140 F and 160 F. If you want to make sure that your salmon is cooked to the right temperature, you can use a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the meat.

You can also use an immersion circulator to keep the salmon at the correct temperature for a long period of time.

Heat the grill to medium heat, about 350° F degrees.

Tear off two sheets of Reynolds Wrap® Non-Stick Foil. They should be about 1 inch larger than your fillet on all sides. Making sure the dull side is up, fold the edges up to form a rim all the way around.

Place a salmon fillet on each piece of foil.

Drizzle olive oil on each fillet. Cut the lemon and tangerine in half. Using just one half, squeeze juice over each fillet. Sprinkle it with salt and pepper.

Cut the rest of the citrus into slices. Layer along the salmon.

Roughly chop the fresh herbs and add alongside the citrus. Sprinkle the nuts next to those.

Place the salmon-topped foil onto the grill. Cook for 10 minutes, or until the internal temperature in the thickest part reaches 145° F degrees.

Remove from the grill. For added flavor, you can drizzle with melted butter and sprinkle with a pinch of cayenne and flake sea salt.

  • Heat the grill to 375 degrees F with the lid closed.
  • Once the grill is fully heated, clean it thoroughly with a wire grill brush. Its easiest to remove old food after the grill is super-hot and the old bits of food start to char and crumble. A clean grill ensures direct contact with the foil which prevents sticking.

Tips For Perfectly Baked Salmon

The one major rule of baking salmon in foil is not to overcook the fish.

  • Baking salmon in foil does give a little leeway because the foil locks in moisture, but you want to pull it out when it is almost but not quite done at the thickest part.
  • A quick pop under the oven broiler will give you a nice finish on the top of the fish and cook it through the rest of the way.
  • If your salmon is almost but not quite cooked and you are worried about overdoing it, you can always remove it from the oven, cover it back up with foil, then let it rest at room temperature for several minutes until it is done to your liking.

How Long Does Salmon Need To Be On The Grill

To keep the grill from sticking, brush it with oil before cooking. Close the grill cover after placing the salmon skin-side up. Grill the salmon for 6-8 minutes on each side. Cook for another 6-8 minutes after carefully flipping the salmon, or until the fish is just cooked through and flakes readily with a fork.

How To Layer The Flavors

This citrus herb foil grilled salmon recipe is really versatile, and can be adapted based on your tastebuds and the ingredients that are readily available.

Start by laying out a sheet of Reynolds Wrap® Non-Stick Foil that is about an inch larger than your salmon on all sides. I like using the non-stick foil, because the salmon will slide right off when youre ready to plate it up. Just be sure to put the dull side of the foil facing up thats the non-stick side.

The star of this dish is the salmon. I went with two full sockeye salmon fillets. You can go with fresh, frozen, farmed or wild. You can even choose whole fillets like this or smaller pieces, if youre only serving 1-2 people. Or, you can even use trout, sea bass or any other fish you happen to enjoy.

After selecting your salmon, its time to pick out the citrus. I prefer smaller citrus fruits like lemons, tangerines and limes. If you want to be a little adventurous, try blood oranges or kumquats.

For the herbs, fresh is best, but dry will work in a pinch . Oregano, thyme and rosemary are solid choices, but you cant go wrong with parsley, cilantro, dill or tarragon either.

Lastly, I sprinkle with nuts to add that crunch factor. Pistachios offer a nice contrast in color, but hazelnuts, cashews and almonds work really well, too.

Once you select all of your toppings, drizzle some olive oil over the fillet along with a fresh squeeze of citrus juice. Then, sprinkle simply with salt and pepper.

Do You Have To Flip Salmon On The Grill

Cooking Salmon Fillets In Foil On Bbq / The Most Delicious Grilled ...

You do not have to flip salmon when grilling. If you prefer grill marks on both sides of your fish, place salmon on the oiled, heated grill. Once the salmon is out of the grate, gently flip it using tongs or a spatula. Continue to cook until the fish is cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F . Remove from grill and allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving.

More Ways To Season Grilled Salmon

In addition to the dill and lemon grilled salmon below, here are more tasty suggestions to keep the recipe feeling fresh:

  • Grill Salmon in Foil with Capers. For a bright, slightly Italian spin, use a few sprigs of thyme in place of the dill and reduce the salt to ½ teaspoon. Sprinkle the finished fish with 1 to 2 tablespoons of drained capers.
  • Grilled Salmon in Foil with Lime. Use lime for the lemon and cilantro in place of dill. Enjoy alongside a Skinny Margarita.
  • Grilled BBQ Salmon in Foil. Instead of the melted butter and garlic, brush 1/4 cup of BBQ sauce on the salmon before grilling. Top with lemon slices as directed.
  • Grilled Salmon in Foil with Soy Sauce. For an Asian spin on your Grilled Salmon in Foil, swap out the melted butter for 1/4 cup of soy sauce. Drizzle the soy sauce over the salmon and top with garlic as directed before placing on the grill. Because of the high sodium content in soy sauce, you can also omit or reduce the added salt. This version would be delicious served with Asian Noodle Salad.
  • Grilled Salmon in Foil with Brown Sugar. A sweet twist on this Grilled Salmon in Foil! Stir 1/4 cup brown sugar into 1/4 cup melted butter, and brush evenly over the salmon. Top with the garlic, salt, pepper, and lemon as directed.
