Cooking Over The Bonfire Cast Iron Grill Top + Hub Was Easy And Fun

    Serious Eats / Grace Kelly

Next, I got cooking. For my first cooking test, I started easy . I cooked up a few Italian sausages, some small sweet peppers, and a few rounds of red onion brushed with olive oil. I also grilled some pre-baked Mrs. Ts pierogi towards the end, when I was a little over-excited that it wasnt a total disaster.

One thing I learned was the cast iron grill grate got hotter on one side because of the way the wood fits in the stove, so being attentive and moving food helped ensure an evenly-cooked end result. I also learned that its worth investing in a good pair of log tongs and a poker readjusting the logs or giving the coals a poke helped regulate and control the heat.

Sausages are also a very forgiving food since they are fatty, its hard to overcook them. The peppers and onion were soft and nicely charred, and even my oddball grilled pierogi turned out well, with a faint smoky wood flavor.

    Serious Eats / Grace Kelly

Next, I cooked up some thinly sliced, marinated beef chuck. The small, thin pieces of beef cooked quickly, about 1 minute per side , so again, attentiveness was key. I also used the hot grill to warm some pitas and char some steamed broccoli. Everything was delicious.

Solo Stove Is Known For Its Fire Pits But How Does Its Portable Grill Stack Up

For years, Solo Stove owners have raved about the brand’s sleek, stainless-steel fire pits, but until recently Solo Stove didnt have any options for grilling. That is, until it launched cast-iron grill accessories that fit atop its fire pit models, and debuted a grill thats specifically built for cooking food: the Solo Stove Grill Ultimate Bundle. These portable charcoal grills feature the same signature 360° Airflow technology used in its fire pits to reduce smoke, creating a convection cooking environment that heats charcoal more quickly and surrounds the cooking food with hot air to cook it faster. And compared to other portable charcoal grills weve tested, this Solo Stove Grill is a top-performer.

    Solo Stove Ranger: Product Review

Whether you are thinking about going camping, visiting the beach, or are just looking for a backyard fire-pit, then look no further than the Ranger, from Solo Stove. This compact, portable, wood-burning fire-pit is one of my favorite new products. Solo Stoves Signature 360-degree Airflow Design makes the Ranger an extremely efficient fire-pit that produces a very minimal amount of smoke. The design of the airflow helps the fire burn more evenly as well, leaving almost nothing but ash, which makes for nice and easy clean-up. To put it simply, the Ranger from Solo Stove does not fail to impress. Whether you are talking about packaging, portability, storage, or ease of use, the Ranger is top of the line. Oh yeah, and it has a Lifetime Guarantee.

First off, let me say I was very impressed with how my new Solo Stove came packaged. It was very well protected, but not to frustrating to get into. Being so compact and portable, it didnt require a ton of packaging so there isnt a ton of mess to clean up. And the set up was probably easier than getting it out of the box . You can go from in the box to ready to light in 5 minutes.

The Ranger is both portable and easy to store. It can be brought on camping trips or outings without taking up too much space, and at only 15 lbs., it can be moved short distances with ease. A convenient carrying case is provided for both trips and storage at home as well.

The system has two parts: a cast iron grill and a hub. The custom-molded grill has a nonstick preseasoned surface, with wide grates to let the wood smoke get into every nook and cranny of your chicken breast.

The grill docks into the Hub, which locks into the Fire Pit, and lifts the grill 6-8 inches above the Fire Pit surface, the ideal height for cooking.

Its been difficult to gather with friends and family over the past year, Solo Stove CEO John Merris said. Our hope is to bring people back together to seamlessly experience a good meal and a wood-burning fire.

This isnt the first time Solo Stove acknowledged customers who craved a cooking-friendly fire pit. Last summer, the brand launched a purpose-built grill. The Grill Ultimate Bundle included a charcoal-burning fire pit with grate, 13-inch stand, and grilling tools for about $500 .

But with the Cook System, Solo Stove allows users to have a grill only when they want it, and a smokeless fire pit the rest of the time. The Grill Accessory Bundle comes in three sizes to accommodate the Ranger, Bonfire, and Yukon sizes. Prices range from $130 up to $230 for preorder, with full MSRP listed at $215-400.

The Fire Lasts Long Enough For A Full Grilling Session

Solo Stove Bonfire Cast Iron Grill Top and Hub Review

We were worried that the coals would burn out too quickly given the lack of vents and convection air flow, but our worries were in vain. Solo Stove says four pounds of charcoal will create a fire that can last 45 minutes. In our tests, we found the coal bed lasted a little longer than that. Our indirect-heat chicken was finished right at 30 minutes, and the grill continued to produce heat hot enough to cook over for another 30 minutes, easily. It was still hot enough to toast buns well after an hour.

    There Are No Adjustable Vents

We appreciate that the Solo Stove Grill is trying to something different with their convective heating environment, and we were more than happy with the food we cooked on it. It all turned out perfectly cooked, and the burgers and chicken tasted just as good as anything we cooked on other charcoal grills. The lack of vents does make the grill easy to use, but it also means you cant customize the cooking session. It can only cook at 400°F to 500°F, so you cant use the grill as a smoker to cook low-and-slow items. That may not be a big deal for some, but it could be a deal breaker for others.

Its Easy To Set Up And Break Down

Some grills take over an hour to build, but the Solo Stove Grill was ready to use less than five minutes after unboxing. Simply put the stand together by screwing in six bolts and place the grill on top of the stand. To break the grill down, pull the grill off the stand . Place it in the carrying case, and on you go. That makes it the perfect option for an on-the-go grilling session on the beach or while tailgating.

Solo Stove Cast Iron Accessory Retrofits Your Firepit Into Grilling Machine

    July 12, 2021 | By Berne Broudy

Turn your smokeless fire pit into a wood-fired grill.

If you shelled out for one of Solos sleek, easy-lighting stainless steel firepits, but were disappointed you couldnt cook on it, you can now complete your setup with Solos Fire Pit Cooking System.

The modular cast iron grill system sits on top of Solo Stove Fire Pits so you can sear, char, and flavor your food with the delicious taste of wood-fired outdoor cooking without burning your wings and dogs to a blackened crisp.

Yes But Know That Its Grilling Functions Are Somewhat Limited

Solo Stove Fire Pit Cooking System

Overall, we were extremely happy with the Solo Stove Grills performance on both direct and indirect heat cooking. It was easy to use and store, quick to ignite, and created delicious-tasting food. That said, the price tag isnt exactly palatable for a charcoal grill, especially one that only works at one temperature. Even at the current sale price, the Solo Stove is over four times more expensive than our winning portable charcoal grill, and its almost twice the price of our winning charcoal grill.

So it really comes down to how you want to cook. Do you want to be able to smoke meat or control the temperature for low-and-slow cooking? This isnt the grill for youconsider a pellet grill instead. Do you want a fully functional grill that can cook incredible-tasting burgers, brats, hot dogs, kebabs, and more? And do you want that grill to be portable and look good doing it? Then this grill is absolutely a great fit, especially if budget isnt an object.

    Solo Stoves Grill Attachment

Considering my love for my Solo Stoveand grillingthis probably comes as no surprise: When Solo launched a fire-pit cooking attachment , I ordered one so fast that my keyboard was smoking.

The attachment arrived with two parts: a metal crown that goes atop the fire pit and a grill grate that rests on the crown. The crown elevates the cooking grate away from the fire. The cast-iron grate holds the food as it cooks.

Our waitress was delightful. Attendant, personable, and engaging. It goes downhill from here. One of my party had to remove his hearing aid to protect his ears. Thundering, intrusive, and deafening noise levels. Conversation across the table and with the waitress was strained. We ordered…”dos chicken fajitas”I’ve eaten a few fajitas over the years. Some fantastic. Some not as fantastic. This “dos” fajita was both miserly, and baring little flavour. The fajitas for two was typically what I would expect for a single serving. The veggies, almost invisible, were hidden under a layer of gilled chicken that someone had apparently spilled the salt box on. The condiments exhibited no sense of generosity. “If you want extra, its extra money for this, this and this”. Leaving, for extra, only the sour cream and lettuce at no charge.Small servings, tasteless, but overly salted, and portion controlled condiments made for a miserable mealAvoid this place.More

    Solo Stoves Launches A Cast

Since starting out with small backpacking stoves way back in 2011, Texan outfit Solo Stove has continued to build out its catalog of fire pits and grills to go with them. The company has now introduced a new cast-iron grilling system designed to fit snugly over these fire pits to turn them into camp-style cooking stations, while using a clever air flow system to keep smoke to a minimum.

Solo Stoves’ fire pits were introduced in 2018 and feature a unique ventilation system designed to minimize smoke for those seated around them. Air is drawn in through a ring of vents at the bottom, with some of that directed into the chamber to feed the fire, while the rest is directed through thin voids in the walls, warmed up and then pushed out across the top of the fire. This creates a type of “secondary burn” that kills off small wood particles that would otherwise become smoke.

The fire pits are available in three different sizes, and the newly launched Fire Pit Cooking system is available to fit all three. It consists of a cast-iron grill featuring a non-stick, pre-seasoned surface with wide grates for the passage of woody flavor. This rests inside a hub component, that then interlocks with Solo Stove’s fire pits, offering a cooking height of six to eight inches over the flames.

The Solo Bonfire Was Also Great As A Fire Pit

    Serious Eats / Grace Kelly

Setting up the Solo stove as a fire pit was identical to setting it up for cooking, except I didnt need to put on the hub and grill grate. Once the fire was really going, my partner and I sat around it and toasted marshmallows. The flames were directed upward by the air flowing through the holes at the bottom and the top, and it was an altogether easy and pleasant experience.
