What Is A Stovetop Grill

A stovetop grill is a type of grill that can be placed on top of a stove. They are often made of cast iron or steel and have a grid-like surface that can be used to cook food. Many stovetop grills also have a lid, which helps to evenly distribute the heat and prevent food from sticking.

There are many different types of stovetop grills available on the market, so it is important to do some research before purchasing one. Some factors that you may want to consider include the size of the grill, the material it is made from, and whether or not it has a lid.

Tips For Grilling On The Stove

  • If you’re using a gas stove, be sure to open the windows or turn on the exhaust fan to ventilate the room.
  • If you’re using an electric stove, be sure to use a pan that is specifically designed for grill pans. Some electric stoves get too hot and can damage regular pans.
  • If you’re using a charcoal grill pan, be sure to use self-lighting briquettes. They’re easier to light and don’t produce as much smoke.
  • If you’re grilling indoors, be sure to have good ventilation. Open the windows or turn on the exhaust fan to avoid filling the room with smoke.
  • Be patient when cooking thin pieces of meat. They will cook quickly and you don’t want to overcook them.
  • If you’re using a grill basket, be sure to shake it occasionally so the food doesn’t stick.
  • When cleaning the grill pan, be sure to use hot soapy water. If the pan is still dirty, you can use a little bit of vinegar to help loosen the stuck-on bits.
  • To prevent rusting, dry the pan completely after washing it and then spray it with a little oil.

With these tips, you’ll be a grill master in no time!

If you’re using an electric stove, preheat the grill pan on the stovetop before adding any food.

For the models we were able to check out in person, we looked for knobs that are made out of metal, that have a nice weight, and that feel securely fastened to the front of the range, without too large a gap between the dial and the body. We checked for oven doors that opened smoothly with a nice heft, racks and drawers that were easy to slide out or remove, and a sturdy control panelpreferably with a glass touchscreen, because it will look nicer over time than a control pad with membrane-style buttons. If the control pad has membrane buttons, they should feel tight and responsive. We also jiggled the grates around to see how secure they were on the cooktop and how easy they were to remove for cleaning.

The more finish options there are, the more flexibility you have when designing your kitchen. We gave a slight preference to those with at least three options, though most people seem to be perfectly content with a stainless steel finish.

Why You Should Trust Us

Ive been writing about appliances professionally since 2012, first as a staff writer at Reviewed and now at Wirecutter. Over the years, Ive spent countless hours working on guides to ranges and cooking appliances, and Ive researched more than 60 different slide-in stoves for this guide alone .

Heres the research we did for this article:

  • We tracked down as much industry sales and trends data as we could from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, Yale Appliance + Lighting, and J.D. Power.
  • We interviewed repair technicians from Maine and Las Vegas, and we interviewed both the CEO and resident chef of an appliance store in Boston.
  • We spoke to product engineers and experts from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Underwriters Laboratory, as well as product representatives from the likes of Whirlpool, GE, LG, and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers , among others.
  • We spent time at a bunch of different showrooms to get a feel for the build quality and sturdiness of some of the most promising models.
  • We read through hundreds of owner reviews, reader comments, and message boards, to identify any reliability problems or real-world quirks.

Upgrade Pick: Ge Profile Pgs930

*At the time of publishing, the price was $1,697.

If you value top-of-the-line cooking features, consider the GE Profile PGS930. Its got the best all-around specs weve seen in a gas slide-in range. Its power burner is the strongest weve seen outside of a pro-style range, and the oven has a few extra features and cooking modes compared to the cheaper GE JGS760. We couldnt find any evidence of defects or design flaws, either. Its a good-looking range, if not quite as sturdy or polished as the Bosch 800 Series, though it comes in more finishes. Its also a front-control range, rather than a true slide-in.

The PGS930s 21,000 Btu tri-ring power burner is among the strongest and most versatile weve seen at any priceyou usually have to step all the way up to a Wolf or Bluestar range to find a burner with so much output. GE claims the tri-ring design allows you to use it to boil a big pot of water as well to simmer at temperatures as low as 140 °F. With most stoves in this price range, youre really meant to use different burners for different tasks, which can mean moving pots around the cooktop. But the Profiles tri-ring burner can be your go-to for pretty much any task.

We really like the look and feel of the glass touch controls, which are a nice step up from the membrane-style controls on the JGS760. The knobs felt securely fastened, and feel heftier than those you find on cheaper models.

Can I Use Cast Iron On The Gas Stove

NJ GC-87 Camping Stainless Steel Gas Stove 3 Burners With Grill & Oven 9.7kW

Yes. Cast iron can be used on a gas stove, but it’s important to make sure that the cast iron is properly seasoned so that it doesn’t stick to the pan.

It’s also important to use caution when cooking with cast iron on a gas stove, as the high temperatures can cause the cast iron to warp or crack. It’s best to use a low or medium flame when cooking with cast iron on a gas stove.

    Be Prepared For The Heat

The cook space gets pretty toasty when you’re blasting up to six power burners, plus a griddle or grill, sometimes all at once. Proper ventilation helps, of course, but you’ll also want to buy heavy-bottomed pans that are several inches larger than the burners so that the heat isn’t just bypassing them.

Keep in mind, too, that the heavy cast-iron grates that are standard on most of these ranges radiate more heat than traditional steel grates and can take an hour or so to cool off completely. Handle them with caution during cleanup.

What Is The Difference Between A Grill Pan And A Frying Pan

A grill pan is a type of frying pan that has raised ridges on the cooking surface. The ridges allow fat to drain away from food as it cooks, which results in less fat being absorbed by the food. This also creates grill marks on the food, similar to those you would get from cooking it on an outdoor grill.

A frying pan is a type of skillet that has a smooth cooking surface. This type of pan is best for making dishes like omelets or scrambled eggs where you want the eggs to spread out evenly.

Can I Use A Grill Pan On A Glass Top Stove

Yes, you can use a grill pan on a glass top stove. A grill pan is a great way to cook food that has a crispy crust and juicy interior, like chicken or steak.

To use a grill pan on a glass top stove, start by heating the grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the food to the grill pan and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the food is cooked through. Be sure to keep an eye on the food while it’s cooking, as it may scorch if it’s left unattended.

Can We Grill On An Electric Stove

Yes! You can most certainly grill on an electric stove. In fact, many people prefer electric stoves for grilling because they provide more consistent heat than gas groves. If you’re using an electric stovetop grill, make sure to use a heavy-duty extension cord so that the increased electricity draw doesn’t trip your home’s circuit breaker.

Be sure to also keep an eye on the temperature of your food – electric stoves can get quite hot, so you’ll want to cook your food at a lower temperature to avoid burning it.
