How Things Are Changing
After revolutionizing the movie theater industry, Schultz wants to reinvent his creation for a new generation, which means letting go of some decades-old practices. Im no longer the core audience, he said.
For example, Schultz always loved bringing the dine-in restaurant experience into the movie theater by having servers take guests orders, but over the years, many customers told him they found it distracting.
With Look, Schultz has decided to mirror the approach a live theater performance would take and reduce distractions for guests during the movie. Servers are around to help patrons before the movie begins, but once it starts, the film becomes the main focus.
We dont ever want to lose the hospitality of having a server help take your order, make sure you get what you need, those kinds of details. But when the movie starts, we switch gears, and then the movie becomes the main feature we just slide quietly into the background, Schultz explains.
Look has even ditched some of the sleek finishes found inside the auditoriums of other upscale theaters, allowing customers to totally focus on the movie in an environment that feels more like a black-box stage than a big-budget movie theater.
Its probably because we all had more time at home than we should have, Schultz admitted with a laugh.
Were trying to go primarily to areas where the theater is the center point of the community and its really necessary that a theater is there, he said.

Soon after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Brian Schultz sat down to think.
If I had a white piece of paper and I was going to start a new company, what would I do differently? he remembers asking himself.
This line of thinking wasnt unusual for Schultz, the CEO of Look Cinemas.
Schultz, 52, helped pioneer the concept of the dine-in movie theater as founder and longtime CEO of Dallas-based Studio Movie Grill, growing from one theater in Dallas in 1993 to 35 locations in 10 states, with several competitors popping up in its wake.
Studio Movie Grill was the textbook model of success, until COVID-19 forced the closure of movie theaters and left Schultzs company with almost no revenue for five months. At one point, the companys 7,200-person workforce shrank to only 34.
Some locations began to reopen in June 2020, but recovery was sluggish as the virus persisted. Even the opening of a new theater in Fort Worth later that summer wasnt enough to give a shot in the arm to what Schultz had termed Studio Movie Grill 2.0.
That was kind of my cue to start Act Two, he said.
Schultz left the company he founded to start a new venture. As CEO of Look, Schultz hopes to revolutionize his original innovation and give audiences a reason to return to the movies. Dallas-based Look has five locations, which Schultz aims to grow to 20 by the end of 2022.

In addition, the chains longtime CFO and COO Ted Croft will become Studio Movie Grills new CEO after navigating the chain through a pandemic in which many of its locations stayed open for food delivery orders. This has been a challenging time for the industry and the brand, Croft said in a statement. Its a testament to SMGs founder, team members, and our other stakeholders, that were standing here today delivering a best-in-class experience to folks getting out of their homes and safely back into theaters.

Studio Movie Grill Gets Back To The Movie Business
Studio Movie Grill, which lost much of its business when the country locked down last year and studios stopped releasing movies, is coming out of its pandemic shell.
The Dallas-based company last month emerged from bankruptcy. On Wednesday it named a new CEO in longtime CFO Ted Croft. It is currently operating 17 locations and plans to open two more, in Indianapolis on April 29 and in Philadelphia on May 27.
It hopes that vaccines and the release of more movies, along with a bit of pent-up demand, will bring people to its movie theaters with full restaurant menus.
Studio Movie Grill was one of the fastest-growing companies of its kind more than a year ago but the pandemic drained its cash reserves. The company had just $100,000 in cash when it declared bankruptcy in October.
It also had 33 locations. The company will emerge with a smaller number of locations, though it expects to complete construction on a new location near a large mall in Alpharetta, Ga., later this year.

Opening hearts and minds one story at a time is the mantra of Studio Movie Grill. The Dallas-based chain, founded in 2000, has quite a story of its own. In 2019, Studio Movie Grill was the 13th-largest exhibitor in North America, combining a dine-in movie experience with numerous community initiativesincluding its Movies + Meals program, providing free screenings and meals to local nonprofitsto build a powerful brand that entered 2020 set to expand.
In April 2019, Studio Movie Grill received $100 million in strategic growth investment from TowerBrook Capital Partners L.P. In January 2020, they announced plans to open five new locations through the first three quarters of the year. In March, the Covid-19 pandemic shut down North American cinemas. In October, Studio Movie Grill filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Studio Movie Grill, the first high-profile movie theater operator to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection during the pandemic, has not found a buyer for the dine-in movie chain as the industry struggles with fewer customers.
Without any bidders, the auction for Studio Movie Grill, which had 37 venues across the country before the coronavirus struck, has been called off and the Dallas-based company plans to pivot and negotiate with creditors on a possible debt-equity swap, according to court documents filed this week in the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas.
The debt-equity swap is a highly risky option and puts creditors as the new owners of the company, which has an uncertain operating future in light of the pandemic, said Eric Horn, an attorney at A.Y. Strauss law firm who is not involved in the Studio Movie Grill bankruptcy case but is familiar with retail bankruptcy cases.
Movie theater venues are hurting from capacity limits, competition from streaming services, as well as Hollywood holding out on releasing new movies in theaters until the end of 2021 or further into 2022.
Studio Movie Grill plans an amended disclosure statement before a hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 9.

This starts with the American-style restaurant in all theatres, accompanied by the full-service bar. Book your movies online , and then arrive about 20 minutes before show time. That way, you can find your seats, and then use the built-in service button to place your orders. The food will then be delivered to your seats.
Whats really unique here is that you can order food and drinks even while the movie is playing. Its not annoying when others beside you do it, because it doesnt disturb anyone.
No Way To Preview Menu
We are going this Saturday for the special needs showing, and I want to preview the menu at home before we go. The problem is that theres no way to just look at the menu without going through the ordering process and selecting your seats and they dont sell tickets for the SN showing online. For that matter, even if we were buying tickets to a regular showing, I would probably want to see the menu first before ordering tickets. Weve been coming to SMG regularly for years, but this is our first time since covid, and we have no idea if the menu has changed or if well be able to order our old favorites. It would be nice to be able to see the menu without having to go through the whole order process.
