Meat Up Grill Opens Its Doors

Life seems to be coming full-circle for restaurant owner and caterer Michael Fiore, as the Rockaway resident opens the doors to the Meat Up Grill on Friday, Feb. 5.

Fiore says he first dabbled in the restaurant business as a prep cook at the All American Eatery, a spot that once inhabited the beach block of Beach 116th Street nearly 30 years ago. Since getting his feet wet on Beach 116th Street so many years before, Fiore has since gone on to graduate from the Culinary Institute and opened up his own restaurants and a catering business. It is the Meat Up Grill, however, that is bringing Fiore back to Rockaway, and as fate would have it his new establishment is just across the street from where the fabled All American Eatery once stood.

The Meat Up Grill began its life as a pop up back in 2017 when Fiore first began selling burgers and chicken sandwiches to the crowds of beachgoers down in Riis Park. Steadily over the years, Fiore has been extending the roots of his business, keeping it at Riis Park throughout the winter of 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the business to a standstill last year.

Fiores personal favorites, he admits, are the fried chicken sandwiches, which he says are big, thick pieces of chicken made with a lot of love.

Reviews For The Meat Up Grill

I love the veggie burger and onion rings. My daughter did a happy dance after eating their house burger. The price is a little high for take out but the quality is good. The food is good but i would order again and recommend others to try it out.

Had the best lunch here! We got the ko-chi chicken sandwich and buffalo chicken sandwich, along with fries and a caramel toffee shake. Everything was phenomenal, especially the ko-chi sandwich and shake. Service was great too!

Beach 116th Meets The Meat Up Grill

Written by Rockaway Staff on February 4, 2021. Posted in NEWS.

Its time to meet up and eat up on Beach 116th Street. Serving up quality beach bites from burgers to chicken sandwiches, salads and more, The Meat Up Grill is gearing up to open on Friday.

Many got a taste of The Meat Up Grill when it came to Riis Park as a summer pop-up in 2017 and then a seasonal restaurant in 2018 as owner and chef Michael Fiore showed Rockaway just how good beach classics like burgers and fries could be. Now The Meat Up will have a place to call home all year long. The Meat Up Grill, located at 165 Beach 116th Street, is opening on Friday, February 5.

The Meat Up Grill, offering takeout, delivery and indoor dining when permitted, puts a unique spin on beachside favorites. The Meat Up is a beach concept. It has that beach vibe, and the products are all familiar items to everyone, but done a little different. Its clean, simple and fun food that puts a smile on everyones face, Fiore said.

The new location offers an inviting, casual feel that makes you feel like youre in your home kitchen. With light painted brickwork, floral centerpieces on wooden tables, cookbooks on the shelves and a giant Rockaway Beach mural painted by artist Geoff Rawling, The Meat Up gives that hometown vibe, and with great customer service and a menu that youll be craving. Its a welcome new addition that will quickly become a community stapleagain.

What To Know About The Rockaway Beach Closures

Some parts of the beach will be open for swimming and others just for sunbathing. The parts of the beach that are fully or partially closed are not staffed with lifeguards, a decision that local lifeguards have called a recipe for disaster. Two people have drowned at Rockaway Beach so far this year.

The Parks Department published a schedule of summer beach closings, which will update as the construction progresses. Heres whats open right now:

We’re well into our third pandemic summer and, thankfully, after that long omicron winter and dreary BA.2 spring, Rockaway Beach, NYC’s best subway beach, is open for business.

    Well, kind of.

The boardwalk concessions are open, but a lot of the actual, physical beach part of Rockaway Beach got off to a rocky start. Like, literally, there are tons of huge rocks everywhere, due to some necessary if perhaps unfortunately timed jetty construction. But as work progresses, the beach closures have changed. Below, we have the latest, per the NYC Parks Department.

Where To Eat At Rockaway Beach

Open ocean or not, up on the boardwalk, and inland by which we mean a block or two away there are loads of excellent things to eat out here. If you want to take advantage of all that beach heading toward Belle Harbor, take the MTA shuttle to the end of line, Beach 116th Street. All our favorite spots are saved in , which you can use to guide you when youre down there.

    Beach 116th

There are a number of generic delis between the subway and the sand over here, where you can get an okay sandwich and a bag of chips for a picnic. Pickles and Pie has the best name and most colorful sign, but their food is indistinguishable from less flashy spots on the strip. Other options on Beach 116th include Meat Up Grill for burgers, the venerable slice shop Ciro’s for pizza, and Carvel for some bland, frozen nostalgia. And for all you health nuts, there’s a slick new smoothie and acai-bowl shop called Baya Bar.

    Beach 106th

Most of the real estate Beach 106th belongs to Maribel Araujo’s great Caracas Arepa Bar, with its jaw-stretching headliners , zippy empanadas and, finally, alcohol again.

    Beach 97th

    Beach 96th

    Beach 92nd

And if you want to get drunk by the bay with lots of local boaters, Bungalow Bar at the other end of Beach 92nd is the spot for you. In addition to the booze, there’s a full menu of “American classics” available.
