Traeger Grills Pro Series 22 Pellet Grill & Smoker

Where Are Traeger Grills Made

What Are The Differences? Traeger Pro 22 & 34 vs Traeger Pro 575 & 780

According to Traeger, all residential grills have been manufactured in China since 2008.

Their larger commercial grills are still manufactured in the United States.

Some people have complained about Traeger moving to manufacture their grills in China but the simple fact is the vast majority of consumer grills are manufactured there.

If buying American-made is important to you, then you might want to consider a Yoder pellet grill, although youll end up paying at least double the price.

The Traeger Pro Series 22 Pellet Grill In A Nutshell

All flame-based grills cook food over a fire. The only thing that changes is whats on fire.

Instead of burning gas or charcoal, Traeger grills use an electric heating element to burn manufactured smoking wood pellets.

A digital thermostat ensures pellets are added automatically as needed to maintain your set temperature. Thanks, to a wide temperature range, you can grill, smoke, roast, and bake with this one barbecue.

Traeger Timberline 1300 Wood Pellet Grill

The Timberline represents the latest and greatest from Traeger, and its got a price point to match.

When the Timberline series was launched back in 2017 it used to have a few more unique features. This year some of these have made their way down to the cheaper Traeger models so its not quite as impressive as it used to be.

But there are still some notable improvements. As well as offering an absolutely whopping 1300 square inches of cooking space, the Timberline is the only Traeger model to include a pellet sensor.

Read our full Traeger Tailgater review.

The Tailgater is Traegers attempt to offer the convenience and flavor of cooking with pellets, in a portable format.

With 300 square inches of cooking space, the Tailgater should still be able to handle 3 racks of ribs or up to 2 whole chickens.

The grill weighs 62 lbs and measures 36 x 37 x 18 inches. The pellet hopper can hold 8 lbs which should allow 4-6 hours of cooking without refilling.

The EZ-Fold legs are a handy feature that allows you to wheel the grill onto the bed or your truck.

What you gain in portability you give up on features. The Tailgater doesnt include WiFi or any of the other improvements in the Pro, Ironwood, or Timberline grills.

Having said that, this grill still performs well and can handle anywhere from 180 450 °F. The digital elite controller keeps temperatures fairly stable within 20 degrees of your set temperature.

Things To Know Before Buying Traeger Industries Barbecues Grills And Smokers

When youre serious about grilling and smoking, the right grill can take your skills to the next level. Thats where Traeger grills for sale come in. This brand sells grills and smokers that use wood pellets and a unique hopper system to provide efficient heating this makes it so you can cook or smoke meats and veggies to perfection.

Available features of Traeger grills and smokers

When youre considering a grill or a used Traeger smoker for sale, look out for the following features:

  • Hopper and auger system: This is the mechanism that sets Traeger grills apart. You load wood pellets into the hopper. Then, the system automatically dispenses pellets into the auger.
  • Hot rod: As its name suggests, this piece heats up until it sets the wood pellets on fire.
  • Fan: The fan stokes the flames from the wood pellets and distributes heat around the interior of the grill. This creates a convection-heating effect that ensures more efficient, even cooking.
  • Controller: This is the control panel that enables you to customize the temperature and operation of the grill. Use the dial to choose the temperature you want and push a button to ignite the grill. From there, the grill manages pellet distribution and the internal temperature.
  • WiFIRE technology: This feature connects your used Traeger for sale to an app on your smartphone. This allows you to keep an eye on the interior temperature of the grill from your phone. You can also make adjustments to help your food cook more efficiently.

Traeger Pro 22 Grill Review Final Thoughts

Traeger Pro Series 22 Wood Pellet Grill

On price, durability, and quality of customer service offered by Traeger Grills, I find the Traeger Pro Series 22 pellet smoker to be a great buy. Though I do use my ThermoWorks Smoke meat thermometers for remote temperature monitoring, the built in dual probe feature on the Pro Series grills from Traeger is a nice feature. They do include the meat probes as well, so youre set to monitor your meats from the grills display at the outset.

This grill is sturdy, and I find that the Pro 22 maintains temperatures very well. Two caveats where temps are concerned do need to be mentioned.

I found that I needed to put a wad of paper towels between the grills internal temperature probe and the wall of the grill in order to achieve an accurate reading. Additionally, the grill doesnt have a lot of internal insulation under the grates. If temperatures dip and the wind kicks up, this will cause it to struggle a little bit to maintain temps.

Overall, I give the the Traeger Pro Series top marks. The company does a phenomenal job with customer support. There are tons of great recipes and videos available to help you get up and smoking regardless of your experience level.

Having the option to cook in so many different styles makes this the perfect barbecue for people who love to cook and experiment with different cuisines.

Honestly, you might never want to use your oven or any other grill or smoker ever again. If you want just one cooker that does everything instead of a line-up of specialty gear, this is money well spent.

Other Factors To Consider When Buying A Pellet Grill

Traeger Pro Series 22 & 34 | Traeger Wood Pellet Grills

With so many models and brands available, deciding which model to buy can be intimidating.

But finding the best grill is all about weighing up your needs. I find it helpful to think about a few different factors when buying a new grill.

Size

The Pellet grills weve looked at in this guide range from 300 1300 square ft. An easy way to narrow your search down is to work out how big you want to go.

Generally the larger you go, the more expensive the grill will get. Although a large grill from a budget brand like Z Grills will still cost less than a more premium brand like Traeger.

If you go too small you wont be able to cook enough food to feed all your guests. But if you go too big your grill will cost more to run and youll waste some wood pellets.

You also need to think about size of the pellet hopper. The larger the hopper the more cooking time you get without re-filing it.

My recommendation is to choose a grill slightly larger than you think youll need.

Features

Some people like to have all the latest tech on their grills, while others prefer to invest all their budget in a grill that focuses on superior build quality.

Have a think about which features are nice to have, and which are non-negotiable.

Some common features on pellet grills include:

Price

Every factor weve talked about contributes to the price. Pellet grills have more tech in them, and generally cost more than other types of smoker.

Traeger Grill Review: My Experience With The Traeger Pro 22

Ive enjoyed cooking on my Traeger Pro Series 22. Put simply, its a solid cooker, it maintains steady and predictable heat, and it turns out a good quality smoked product.

I ran the Pro 22 through its paces cooking competition style pork ribs and Texas style beef ribs. These are two very different preparations, requiring two very different cooking methods.

Traeger Ironwood 650 Wood Pellet Grill

The Ironwood series is a new addition to the Traeger lineup of pellet grills.

Available in either 650 or 885 square inches, you get a larger, more versatile grill than the pro series without the large price jump you see on the Timberline series.

Having said that, even the smaller 650 square inch Ironwood is over the $1,000 mark, so this is not a budget grill.

Traeger Ironwood 650 Specifications:

Weight 146 Lbs

The Ironwood is similar to the more expensive Timberline. You get the DownDraft Exhaust and TRU Convection features that used to be unique to the Timberline.

While it does sound a bit like marketing jargon, these features promise to help circulate fresh smoke, keeping smoke in the chamber and maintaining even temp.

All things that we like to hear.

Youve also got some handy features that make this grill easy to use. Like the keep warm mode and options to create custom cook settings via the digital control panel or app.

What we like:

  • Option for searing The bottom cooking grate can be lowered for searing, or raised for grilling and smoking.
  • Better insulation The Ironwood uses double side 304 stainless steel for better insulation and temperature control.

The Ironwood series is all about offering a middle range between the pricier Timberline and smaller more basic Pro series.

Pork Ribs On The Traeger Pro Series 22

I live in Florida. Despite what you might think, Florida is in the south. I know. So much of the state seems like a transient appendix of the US. But all the same, when you talk BBQ in Florida youre talking pork. The Pig Still Rules.

This being the case, I set about cooking some comp ribs on the Traeger Pro Series 22. Well, I was very pleased with the results. This smoker produced great even smoke flavor using a fruit and hardwood blend of pellets. You can see from the color on the ribs from the side view that there was good smoke penetration, and the ribs turned out nice and moist.

Preparation on these ribs was easy. I used the competition prep outlined in my post covering how to cook competition ribs. I used blend of Rubs Original Rub from Swamp Boys and Lakeland BBQ Company Perfect Score Rub both available at Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply.

Thanks to the popularity of Traeger wood-fired pellet grills, there are now many more brands to choose from. While Traeger is still the most popular, these brands are definitely hot on their tails.

Ive tried to provide a general overview of how each brand compares with Traeger, but because each brand produces many different grills if you need specifics I would suggest comparing individual specs from the manufacturers and then looking at a few different reviews.

Traeger Grill Review: Pro 22 Specifications

The Traeger Pro Series 22 represents the flagship level pellet grill from Traeger. The next step up for home and competition use would be the new Timberline Series, which is a big step up from these models.

Rather than a PID controller, which I do not feel is necessary at all, the Traeger Pro uses a Digital Pro Controller equipped with Advanced Grilling Logic to automatically maintain its temperature within 15°F.

Total cooking area for the Traeger Pro Series 22 when using the secondary cooking rack comes to 572 square inches. This is enough space to cook 4 pork butts if youre not using pans, and two if you are. You can fit about 5 racks of ribs using the top cooking rack.

To power the Pro 22, simply plug it into a standard 110 volt outlet. The specs on the Pro Series 22 from the Traeger Grills website are as follows.

  • 572 sq. in. grilling area
  • Main Rack: 22 x 19, Extra Rack: 22 x 7
  • Digital Pro Controller with Advanced Grilling Logic and Dual Meat Probes
  • 18 lb. Pellet Hopper Clean-Out, change pellet flavors on the fly
  • Main Rack easily holds 16 burgers | 4 chickens | 24 hot dogs | 5 rib racks
  • Extra Rack easily holds 8 burgers | 12 hot dogs

As with any pellet grill, be sure to purchase a cover and use quality pellets. This ensures you get a nice long life of use out of your smoker.

Available Upgrades Accessories And Attachments

Traeger Pro Series 22 Wood Pellet Grill Unboxing, Assembly And Start Up!

Though not an upgrade, exactly, the first thing youll want to get for your new Traeger Pro Series 22 pellet grill is more pellets! They come in a variety of flavors, and youll have fun experimenting and combining different foods with different woods.

Out of the box, theres no work surface available for getting prepped. Fortunately, Traeger sells a folding front shelf that runs the full width of the cook box. This is ideal for sliding large cuts in and out, and for last-minute mopping, rubbing, and seasoning.

For some storage space, check out the bottom shelf accessory. It attaches near the bottom of the frame, just about the wheels.

Holding a consistent temperature is the key to smoking and slow roasting. Unfortunately, thats not easy to do in cold weather! If you love to cook all year, consider the insulated blanket to help hold in the heat.

You can also grab a variety of extra shelving and specialty racks for ribs, poppers, or extra smoking space. From a practical standpoint, some foil liners for your drip bucket will make and easy clean-up even easier!

As always, though, the most important accessory for your Traeger is a fitted cover. This low-cost investment will extend the life and protect the appearance of your beloved barbecue by keeping out moisture between uses.
