What About Napoleon And Broil King
Both of these companies make well-designed grills with cast-aluminum fireboxes and enameled steel frames. Theyre not picks, however, because we found that Weber grills struck the best balance of searing power and usability of the three brands. Here are our observations on both the Napoleon and Broil King models we tested in 2017:
The Napoleon Rogue 425 is the Canadian companys flagship in the $400 to $900 range. Like the other models we tested in that category, this one has a cast-aluminum firebox, porcelain-coated cast-iron grates, and three burners. On paper, the Rogue 425 has a lot going for it, but we were disappointed in its performance. Despite showing 650 °F heat on our burger test, it failed to achieve a good sear. We suspect this is due to a combination of a couple things: the pyramidal grate bars making minimal contact with the meat, and the grills thermometer overstating the actual temperature by about 50 degrees . The grill also struggled to hold a steady temperature on the barbecue-chicken test. Napoleons signature is its wavy grates, and they do look cool, but theyre harder to clean than straight grates. They also leave odd, distorted sear marks if you try to make the classic crosshatch pattern. Assembly was straightforward, and the instruction manual was well-thought-out. But given the Weber Spirit II E-310s higher performance and lower cost, the choice was clear.
Available Upgrades Accessories And Attachments
This isnt an upgrade, exactly, but you do have color options on the E-310. Choose from Black, Sapphire, Red, and Ivory to suit your style or outdoor décor.
Weber offers a berserk quantity of accessories you can use, including a rotisserie, specialty racks, lights, cleaning gear, hats and clothing, and even a toy charcoal grill for kids. If you only buy one thing, though, make it a fitted cover to protect your grill from rain, wind, snow, etc. Its the easiest way to prolong the life of your new grill.
You might also want to check out the iGrill3 thermometer system theres a mounting space custom-made for it on the right shelf. The twin probes monitor the internal temperature of two cuts of meat, with the option to add two more probes.

An Overview On Gas Grills
Theres no better way to enjoy warm weather than with a great backyard barbecue. Whether youre cooking for your immediate family or a large group of friends, meat and vegetables taste a little better when cooked over a grill. Gas grills are the quickest and easiest way to cook outdoors since they fire right up in a couple of steps. However, great-tasting meals start with the grill you choose.
When shopping for grills, it can be easy to get caught up in the quality of the construction: make sure the grills cook box has thick and solid walls to keep the heat inside, especially if you prefer to grill year-round. Generally, heavy stainless steel is a good option because it doesnt rust.
But while it is important to choose a sturdy, durable grill since it will be exposed to the elements 24 hours a day, you should put far more effort into weighing the grills cooking ability. Weber Spirit E-210 LP Gas Grill, 2-Burner model has burners that put the perfect sear marks on your meat, if thats important.
Primarily, youll need to look for a grill that offers even heat from front to back, which provides consistency. This will let you use every square inch of burner space while cooking rather than confining all your items to the area of the grill that gets hottest.
Also, look for heavy cooking grids and full coverage from cooking elements. You dont want hot or cold spots on your grilling surface!
The need for rapid, even heating means that you should consider size.

The Weber Spirit Ii E
As with most gas barbecues, this is pretty much a straight-up grilling machine. Its best suited to searing and cooking those burgers, dogs, steaks, chicken breasts, and more that we all love.
However, because it features three separate burners, its possible to set up multizone cooking.
This could mean searing on one very hot section of the grill and then finishing on another, cooler section. Or, you can use convection to roast or slow cook meat for many hours over indirect heat.
With more burners, you have more options. And, it does all this without the need for charcoal, pellets, or wood.
The Weber Spirit ii E-310 also appears highly in our roundup of the best propane gas grills, as well as the NG version in our guide to the best natural gas grills, and our list of the best gas grills to buy under $500. So what do we see in it to give it such praise?
Lets start with a look at the company, Weber, themselves.

What About Propane Vs Natural Gas
All of our picks are propane-gas grills, since propane tanks are portable and can be purchased almost anywhere, and they dont require any special hookups in your backyard.
However, our picks are also sold in natural-gas versions, which are gaining in popularity. But they require that you have a natural-gas hookup on your deck or patio. If you have natural gas in your home but dont have an outdoor connection, youll need to hire a technician to install one, and this may involve cutting into walls. And if you want to easily move your natural-gas grill into and out of storage, youll also need to buy a quick-disconnect system, which can add another $150 or so. The benefits of natural gas include not having to wrestle propane tanks on and off your grill, always-available fuel , and lower fuel costs . This post provides a deeper rundown of the process.
Of course, you may also have concerns about how each of these fuel choices might impact the environment. Theres no easy answer, but we discuss some of the considerations in the sustainability section below.
After weeks of research and two days of testing on burgers, barbecue, and whole chickens, the Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill 22 is our pick as the best charcoal grill for most people.

Maintaining The Gas Grill
I may have been using grills for practically my whole life, but I will be the first one to admit that I absolutely hate cleaning up after a cookout. Therefore, I was interested to see just how easy it would be to clean and maintain the Weber Spirit II E 310 gas grill.
As mentioned, the grates have been designed to be easy to clean. As long as you use a cleaning brush to dust them off after every cooking session, they should remain as good as new. Remember to avoid using too much pressure or harsh tools or you may risk chipping the coating.
The grease management system ensures that all the grease ends up in one place. As long as you make a point to empty out regularly and remove the grease, cleanup should be a breeze. Whats more, the grease management system is easily accessible from the front, making it a breeze to get to it.
The only thing that you need to be careful of when cleaning is the flavorizer bars. Make every effort to avoid scratching it so only use a stainless steel brush if you absolutely have to. Whats more, avoid using metal on it stick to plastic cleaning tools.
An interesting feature is that the burner tubes have netting over them. This is great for keeping creepy crawlies away so that you dont have to clean them out later. This mesh needs a bit of brushing every now and then.
Summary Of Pros And Cons
- 2 oversized wheels for easy repositioning
- 6 tool hooks to keep you organized and your side shelves clear
- Sturdy lower shelf for storage
- Tank scale should keep you from running out of propane while cooking
- Lid thermometers are basically useless, so be sure to have a digital thermometer ready, such as the iGrill3 from weber themselves.
- Four wheels would make it easier to move around but, how often do you roll your grill?
- If both shelves folded, off-season storage would be even easier

Why You Should Trust Us
When we first started working on this guide, back in 2017, we spoke with more than a dozen experts before opening the valve on a single propane tank.
Among those experts, Joe Salvaggio of Big Apple BBQ spent two hours explaining the fundamentals of gas grill design, function, materials, and maintenance. Joe and his brother Tony have run Big Apple BBQ, one of the New York regions leading grill shops, for over 30 years. Because Salvaggio is an independent retailer who carries grills from many manufacturers, he was able to speak freely about what he saw as the relative strengths and weaknesses of various designs.
At the 2017 Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Expo, we interviewed senior product managers from almost every major grill-maker in attendance, including several brands that wound up being featured in our test: Weber, Broil King, and Napoleon. We also spoke with multiple makers of high-end grills. Though we wouldnt be testing their grills, we found that understanding what goes into making a $4,000 grill helped us evaluate the less expensive grills in our test.
We backed this reporting with comprehensive researchthe in-depth, professional reviews at AmazingRibs.com being a standout sourceand with hands-on time with grills at the big hardware chains.

Backyard Bbq With Weber Gas Grills
Turn out incredible meals on a large Weber natural gas grill or propane grill at your next backyard BBQ and have space on the grill for mouthwatering ribs, tender chicken, succulent sausages and a whole lot more.
Pay special attention to these features when shopping for a performance-minded Weber gas grill for backyard BBQs:
- Number of Burners:More burners equal more control over your heat. Models with three, four or six burners provide multiple heat zones, so you can have thick chops, thinly-sliced meats and an assortment of veggies going at the same time. Back burners provide even more heating options for cooking and keeping food warm.
- Cooking Area: The number of burners can also indicate the available cooking area. Although it depends on the grill model, two burner and three burner grills can easily serve a household, while grills with four or six burners are best for frequent grilling and large BBQ get-togethers.
- BTU Output: BTU rating indicates how much fuel a grill burns. Weber gas grills are designed for quality, performance and efficiency, meaning they will burn the right amount of fuel for consistent grilling results.
- Side Burners:Cook or heat side dishes while you attend to the grill with a Weber model that features one or two side burners.

Whats The Environmental Impact Of Gas Grills
A grill that is both durable and easy to repair creates much less waste than a cheapo grill that ends up in the garbage. We chose grills with fireboxes made of cast aluminum because the firebox is a major part of the grill, its difficult to replace, and aluminum is resistant to rust and corrosion. Cheaper grills have thin enameled steel fireboxes that are prone to damage and holes from rust. Once your grill has a rusty hole in the firebox, its destined for the scrap heap.
Also, as mentioned in the above section on grill maintenance, things like burner hoods , grilling grates, and the ignition switch are consumable parts, meaning they eventually degrade or wear out over time and are meant to be replaced. Those are parts that should be easy to find and can be purchased for a reasonable pricepreferably from the company that made the grill. Any solid grill maker will have those available for purchase, even if your grill is 15-plus years old.
But what about fuel? This is a tough one because, well, theres no one clear answer. Gas grills run on either liquid propane or natural gasboth fossil fuels. Though both are relatively clean-burning fuels, propane emits fewer greenhouse pollutants than natural gasthough the difference is negligible. However, propane is more efficient because it burns hotter than natural gas. Additionally, propane tanks are inexpensive, reusable, and available at most hardware and big-box stores.

Packaging: Everything Included But Slightly Confusing
When we first opened the boxes that contained the parts to our new Weber grill, we were a bit confused. The instructions contain information on multiple models of the Spirit II, and it wasnt clear what exactly our boxes should contain. We spent quite a while digging around for pieces we thought should be in our boxes before we realized that we didnt need one of the hardware bags listed on the instructions.
We also had some issues with the included gas hose and regulator. When we turned on the gas, there was a leak where the regulator meets the hose, requiring a run to the hardware store to replace the part.
Other than that, the packaging for this Weber grill was solid. Everything was contained in one large box, and it took two people to lift and carry the package to our desired setup location.
