The Evolution Of Outdoor Cooking

For most home cooks, the traditional barbecue is a single-function cooker, used to sear and flame-grill meat and vegetables.

The power and control of an outdoor grill opens up a new world of culinary possibilities, creating a true outdoor kitchen where baking, roasting, slow cooking and braising take on new qualities.

Imbue smoky flavors into proteins, crisp flatbreads with a thick crust, and create perfect chars on vegetables for meals that are fit for the professional kitchen.

Weber Moves Back To Palatine

Big red grill will mark Weber site in Rolling Meadows

By ohtadmin | on April 04, 2016

Weber-Stephen Products LLC, the maker of Weber grills, pulled up recent roots in Rolling Meadows and moved back to Palatine two weeks ago.

I believe the move was competed a couple of weeks ago, Weber-Stephen spokesperson Kim Durk told the Journal & Topics on Friday, April 1. They were able to combine those employees in Rolling Meadows with those located on Daniels Road into one new space.

Weber-Stephen has moved its corporate headquarters from Webers main base of operations at 200 E. Daniels Rd., Palatine, and its Rolling Meadows operations at 2900 W. Golf Rd., to a new corporate base at 1415 Roselle Rd., Palatine, formerly owned by Schneider Electric.

Weber-Stephen decided to purchase the Roselle Road property last summer following France-based Schneider Electrics decision to move its U.S. headquarters from Palatine to Andover, Massachusetts.

In 2014, Weber-Stephen leased a 47,900-sq. ft. office building at 2900 W. Golf Rd. in Rolling Meadows, around the corner from the new Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. corporate headquarters. Weber-Stephen moved several of its employees to the Rolling Meadows site from Palatine with preliminary plans to build a giant Weber grill statue three stories high along Golf.

The new office space in Palatine, Durk noted, is located on 38 acres of land and will house about 400 Weber-Stephen employees.

Weber Grills Made Overseas

On the other hand, the Spirit and Genesis II lines are manufactured in either China or Taiwan.

If buying American-made products is important to you, steer clear of the units in these lineups. If you decide to buy one anyway, be aware that the Genesis line comes with a few extra featuresand a price tag to match.

If you arent sure whether the grill youve purchased was made in the US, check the labeling. The ones that are manufactured at the Huntley facility still carry the Made in the USA stamp. However, most of them include the caveat that some of the components are made in other countries. If theres no stamp, then the grill was made in China.

Who Owns The Weber Grills

Restoring an old Weber Grill – Uncleaned for 10 years

Weber Grills is a privately-owned company that focuses on making charcoal, electric and gas grills. The company also manufactures some related accessories that consumers buy in order to make their experience more enriching.

Weber is owned by the Weber-Stephen Products LLC. This is a privately-owned manufacturer who also owns some assets of Ducane Products. In a bankruptcy sale in 2004, Weber Grills successfully bought some of the assets of its competitor, Ducane Products Co.

Weber was a business owned by the family of Stephen George Sr. This family business successfully ran its operations for decades until they sold their controlling stake. This had to be done because Weber Grills was losing some international market due to the rise in competition. They sold the controlling stake to BDT. The BDT owns some part of the company but the majority control still lies with the original owners.

The 2010 BDT acquisition did not include the restaurant operations. This is why even today the restaurants are owned by the family of Stephen Georgeâs family. Even though the brand name did not change, the two firms have drifted apart. The company owned by BDT manufactures and deals with outdoor grills while the other company focuses on restaurants and their operations.

Where Are Weber Grills Made

The Weber Grills are headquartered in the United States. The Headquarters of the company are in Palatine, Illinois. This long-run family business historically manufactured grills and their accessories in the United States. However, ever since the BDT contract in 2010, the question on everyoneâs mind is: are the products still manufactured in the United States or not?

Even though the Weber Grills are headquartered in the United States and their primary functioning is carried out in Illinois, their products are not entirely made in the United States. This is because many of the parts that go into making the grills are imported from other countries that go into making the grills.

In fact, the Weber Grills have even faced court action and trial back in 2012 when they claimed to have made their products in the USA. The âmade in the USAâ stamp on their products was under fire as their grill components are imported from other countries and the consumers felt misled.

The newer Weber models are made in China as the parts are made there and then imported to be assembled in the USA with the rest of the parts. Even their labels now read âMade in the United States of America with some globally sourced parts and components.â While some other products are completely made in China or some are completely built using globally sourced components.

Weber Grills Industrial History

Somewhere in the 1950s, the founder of Weber Grills, George Stephen Sr. worked as an employee in the sales department of Weber Brothers Metal Works. This was a company that his father with a few of his friends operated at the time.

A Weber grill is known for its domed shape which is believed to give the best possible shape. This shape and the first grill itself date back to Weber Brothers Metal Works itself. The company was founded somewhere in the late 1890s. It was based in Chicago and manufactured a large variety of metal products. It produced metal products like hinges, wagons, cylinders and so on.

At the time, George Stephen Sr. had an inventive mind that was always teeming to experiment with different kinds of metals and making new shapes out of it. Stephen was very fond of grilling and barbecuing and so was his growing family which included 12 children.

In earlier times, the popular design of the grill was the open brazier that worked on charcoal or some other kind of coal. This appliance used a metal tray or mesh to hold the coals in place. The real problem of the grills was that the top half was left open. This meant that the food was left vulnerable to the weather.

Product Features Glitches & Future Improvements

After packaging, the conversation shifted to R& D. We spent some time talking about the glitches I noted in my videos, including the way the charcoal grate sits in the bowl, the loose vent damper, and the out of round condition. Weber understood these issues and was considering options to address each of them. Based on our discussions, I am hopeful that we may see better consistency in the way parts fit together. Well see what happens.

The Weber staff asked me a lot of questions about what I liked about the new 22.5 design and why. They asked me why this new 22.5 unit would appeal to all of you. I mentioned cooking capacity, flexibility to cook larger items or items in different configurations , and the fact that they had addressed some of the most obvious missing features and niggling problems.

We also had a chance to discuss some of the other missing features that many of you have commented about and why you want them, like a probe thermometer eyelet and handles on the middle cooking section and on the bottom cooking grate. As I suspected, these kinds of handles are features that Weber does not want to add for safety reasons. They do not want to tempt you to remove the middle cooking section or the bottom cooking grate during operation.

Weber Grills Made In The Us

Weber Grills – Gas Factory Tour

The following grills are made in the USA with globally sourced components: The Original Kettle Charcoal Grill, the high-tech grills in the Summit Series, and the futuristic Q Series units.

If you own a Smokey Joe, a Jumbo Joe, or a Go-Anywhere grill, you may rest assured that these have been manufactured in the US as well.

If its a traditional kettle-style charcoal grill youre after, the Original Kettle is a good bet. Not only is it more affordable than most of the units in Webers lineup, its also user-friendly. The grill is available in several sizes, from 18 to 26 inches. Theres also a Premium version, which offers a sophisticated ash management feature.

The Summit line is made up of both charcoal and gas-powered units. There are a few kamado-style grills in the series as well. As the name suggests, these grills are among the very best that Weber has to offer. The gas grills in this series are particularly appealing, but be forewarned that theyre also fairly expensive.

If youve ever seen a grill in the Q series, theres a good chance that you remember it. The cooking chamber on a Weber Q Series grill has a saucer-shaped design, making it a great conversation starter. These grills are instantly recognizable, even if you dont know what theyre called. Most of them are portable, but the Q3200 is a full-sized model.

About The Heat Shield

So lets talk about the new heat shield for a moment. Turns out that it works by creating an insulating layer of air between the bowl and the aluminum shield to protect your deck, patio, lawn, etc. The interesting thing is that it also causes more heat energy to stay inside the cooker, so there should be marginally better cooker performance as a side benefit of the shield. Who knew?

Regarding the fact that the heat shield cannot be removed after assembly, this is intentional. Since it is considered a safety feature, Weber does not want you removing it, forgetting to put it back, having it fall out by accident, etc. They dont believe it will catch ashes or get clogged with debris during use or storage. Well see over time.

Toward the end of my visit, we had a wide-ranging discussion about the kinds of accessories I use when barbecuing with the WSM, and they asked questions about specific accessories and if they would be of interest to folks like us. The Weber folks were coy about their plans in this area, but I got the feeling they have a few tricks up their sleeves, so well just have to wait and see what they do.

Amazing Grill Collection Around The Office

Our meetings were held in a conference room that was once George Stephens office. It was chock-full of his mementos, photos, and memorabilia. Quite a place, it impressed the heck out of me. The spirit of George Stephen and the feeling of Weber history were all around you in that amazing space.

Oh, and did I mention all the old and new Weber grills and advertising and memorabilia throughout the building? An original 1952 kettle sits in the lobby. Turn the corner and you run into a big, beautiful, 6-burner, top-of-the-line Summit. Nearby is an old red kettle with metal handles and rubber tires. The next jaw-dropping site is The Westerner from 1958, with steer horns painted on the side. I even saw a few decorated grills, including one painted like a big, juicy hamburger with all the fixins. I felt like a kid in a candy shop!
