With a name like Mother Cruncher, I was really hoping for a life-altering bite. Checkers and Rallys new chicken sandwich, however, was average at best. The alleged mega crunch wasnt all that crunchy, the chicken breast itself was okay but slightly flavorless, the pickles were standard fast food picklespuckery but slightly shriveled, and the tomato and lettuce did not add nor detract from the overall experience. I will add that its new Squawk Sauce, which comes on the Mother Cruncher, is creamy and delicious. But the sandwich itself falls flat. The main redeeming part of my meal was the order of incredible battered fries I got with my sandwich unfortunately, those arent what were ranking here.

This sandwich is part of the “Artisan” chicken revamp that McDonald’s released in 2015 along with the crispy fried version. The grilled white-meat breast fillet is topped with lettuce, tomato, and a vinaigrette dressing, all within McDonald’s “artisan” bun.

The chicken is rubbery. It’s not all that flavorful, even with the mystery vinaigrette that quickly becomes a messy, drippy hassle. The slightly sweet bun is a mismatch with grilled chicken it works better with the saltier fried chicken and best with a savory beef patty. It’s a middle-of-the-road, disenchanting sandwich with little imagination at best.

Theres no doubt that last year was one for the birds in more ways than imaginable. In a reflection of a growing focus on fried chicken in fast-food markets and decreased interest in beef McDonalds is starting off the new year by launching three new chicken sandwiches.

The Sandwich:

There are few sandwiches that are better by dropping bacon, but Carls Jrs Santa Fe Chicken club is in every way an improvement over the Charbroiled Chicken Club, thanks to the inclusion of a very flavorful bed of green chili underneath the chicken in place of bacon. This sandwich uses the same sweet honey wheat bun but ditches the mayo for what Carls calls Santa Fe Sauce, which tastes to me like mayo with paprika, cayenne pepper, and curry powder added to it.

The sauce is a major improvement over the mayo, it adds spice and depth, while still supplying the tang that helps to elevate a chicken sandwich when pickles arent included. But the real star of the show is the mild green chili. Sure, it doesnt supply any heat but it adds a smokey note and a mild, earthy flavor on the backend that makes every bite an absolute joy.

Burger King: Crispy Chicken Sandwich

For the sake of keeping this ranking relatively consistent, I ordered Burger King’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich rather than its long, sub-like Original Chicken Sandwich. Maybe that is where I went wrong because this wasn’t the interpretation of the classic chicken sandwich I was expected from the royal burger chain.

Obviously, fried chicken is liberally seasoned and a salty patty is to be expected from a fast food joint, but the King’s relatively thin fried patty left my mouth on the dry side. The tomatoes and lettuce, which both lacked any crispness, didn’t provide much relief. A heavy smear of mayo might have been able to save the day, but I couldn’t detect any even though the sandwich is meant to sport some. The mayo was missing.

Thankfully, Burger King has new and improved fried chicken sandwiches in the works.

No shocker here: Grabbing a fried chicken sandwich for breakfast is never going to be as healthy as, say, having some hard boiled eggs and fruit. But the idea of chicken for breakfast isnt the problem here.
