Helpful Tips To Know About Z Grills Vs Rec Tec

Z Grills and Rec Tec design great pellet grills that both beginners and expert grillers can use. So, how then do you choose the right brand for you?

Here are tips to help you get started:

  • Think About Your Budget if you are a budget-conscious person, opt for a Z Grill as the company is generally affordable.
  • Consider Your Needs Rec Tec will offer more flexibility if you grill for a large crowd as its cooking surface is more.
  • if you will, Rec Tec is the best choice as the grills come with many accessories.
  • Determine How Much Space You Have Z Grills are an excellent choice for those with limited space.

How Well Did This Grill Perform As A Smoker

Rec Tec vs Traeger Pellet Grills

Smoking foods requires regular temperature control and low temperatures. This is why temperature regulation is a really important feature for a smoker.

When youre smoking meat, the best temperature range tends to be between 200 and 220°F. Z Grills starts at 180°F so you can keep your meat in the ideal smoking temperature range.

Smoking is a long process of cooking tough meats to get a tender and flavorful dish. As a dietitian, I have to remind you of food safety and reaching certain temperatures is important. Most meats need to be cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees and poultry to 165 degrees. Anything lower than these temperatures and you risk food-borne illnesses. Thats why its best to have accurate temperature readings during the smoking process.

The Z grills PID controller helps maintain a precise temperature of the smoker. And the temperature probe lets you check your foods temperature on the large LCD control panel without lifting the lid. Youve got two probes, so even if youre cooking two different food items, you dont have to lift the lid to check the temperature.

There are two reasons to keep the smokers temperature low during the cooking process: one is to give the smoke time to penetrate the meat, and the second is to tenderize and flavor your meat. The best meats tend to be tough cuts, so the slow cooking gives the natural connective fibers time to break down.

A To Z List Of Pellet Grill/smoker Brands

Back in 2007 when I first become aware of pellet grills and smokers the only brand I was really aware of was Traeger. Traeger is really where this whole concept of cooking with pellets started in the 1980s. It was a slow burner but since the 2010s is really when pellet grills and smokers started to get mainstream awareness, discussed alongside gas and charcoal grills. There are now over 30 pellet grill/smoker brands that Im aware of, and the link above goes to my A to Z list of brands article.

Now, you may already be aware of a few of the other brands such as Pit Boss, Camp Chef, Z Grills and Im sure you are aware of Weber, though you may not have known they have entered the pellet grill game. However, they are now many, many more brands to look into. Some may be what are commonly referred to as Traeger clones, but many others are offering their own unique designs and features.

Z Grills Pellet Smoker Reviews: Shortcomings

Honestly, theres not much to say in terms of Z Grills shortcomings. In almost every category, Z Grills delivers value that exceeds its price tag. However, there are a few small factors that are worth mentioning.

Temperature control, because these pellet smokers dont come insulated, you might find it hard to maintain the internal temperature in cold climates. But, this is easily corrected with a Z Grills thermal blanket to keep the warmth in. The blanket is fireproof and affordable.

Portability can be a hassle with your Z Grill. Although they do have small wheels and are easy to move on flat surfaces, some models can be tricky to move around on rough surfaces, as we mentioned previously.

Most smokers dont reach high enough heat for grilling. So, it wouldnt be fair to say its a Z Grills shortcoming but rather one of pellet smokers in general. Although they can reach up to 500°F, these smokers are better suited for slow-cooking.

How Z Grills Work

Traeger vs. Rec-Tec Comparison and the MotG winner

If you know how pellet grills work, feel free to skip ahead.

The Z Grills design is very similar to brands like Pit Boss and Traeger. The grill works by burning wood pellets to create heat and smoke to flavor your food.

In our video review of the Z Grills 700D4E we show how this popular design works, and what we think of it after smoking on it.

The pellets are stored in a hopper located on the side of the grill. A mechanical auger feeds the pellets into a firebox where a rod ignites them.

A sensor keeps track of the temperature and works with the digital controls to maintain the temperature you set by controlling the flow of pellets and airflow.

This design allows you to load up your hopper, set the temperature and effectively set it and forget it.

While they are often called pellet grills, I really think of them as smokers or ovens since they specialize in maintaining steady temperatures over long hours.

Pellet Grills are great for people who dont want the hassle or mess of cooking with charcoal but want more smoke flavor, and convenience than gas or electric smokers can provide.

Build Quality And Construction

Both the Rec Tec vs Traeger are made of high-end durable materials.

And while some Traeger grill reviews might disagree, we think Rec Tec beats Traeger inbuilt quality and craftsmanship. Traeger grill is made of chip and rust-resistant powder-coated steel handles, stainless steel, and porcelain grates. Moreover, their ironwood grills have insulation on both walls. The more expensive Timberline series features stainless steel interior and grates. Meanwhile, Rec Tec uses stainless steel on all their products, since this material is more resistant to corrosion than powder-coated steel. Thus, Rec Tec grills are more durable than low and mid-range Traeger. Sorry, Traeger, but we think Rec Tec wins this round of Traeger vs Rec Tec debate.

Rec Tec Vs Yoder Final Verdict

So, when it comes to choosing the best grillers and smokers what company would you like to go with? Undoubtedly, affordable grillers and smokers lie with Rec-Tec. Z Grills Multitasker 11002b

The Multitasker 11002B bears more than a striking resemblance to a Traeger Timberline with its bamboo chopping board on top of the pellet hopper. However, Timberline models are far more expensive than this Z Grill so Ive not used them for this comparison.

What the Multitasker also has in common with the Traeger Timberline is a fully insulated twin-wall cooking chamber. This type of construction helps a pellet grill reduce pellet consumption and be much more practical when using a pellet grill in winter.

The biggest names in the industry include Rec-Tec, Traeger, and Green Mountain. However, what is the best among these grill brands?

Overall Z Grills Vs Traeger Winner

Weve done a lot of comparison articles on Own The Grill, and Im not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the closest calls Ive ever seen when comparing two brands.

I think Traeger makes the higher quality and more feature laden pellet grill, but theres no denying Z Grills offer some of the best value on the market. The winner, and whats best for you largely comes down to your personal needs and preferences.

For example, if youre looking for a portable pellet grill well, Traeger is clearly your choice. If you have a little bit more cash to work with in your budget, a Traeger will get you more extra features and durability than Z Grills, and that might be worth it to you!

On the other hand, if youre looking for the absolute best value pellet grill, its hands down Z Grills. You simply wont find a better bang for your buck on the market. As long as youre ok without the extra bells and whistles Z Grills is a fantastic choice.

Traeger also generally holds more brand loyalty since theyre the original and have been around for so long, if you care about that sort of thing. Traeger also has a strong history of delivering quality products to their customers. Z Grills are for sure the new kids on the block, but they havent exploded in popularity for no reason.
