HOW TO CLEAN AND CARE CAST IRON PANS | HONEYSUCKLE

We all love to eat delicious food and many love cooking but when it comes to cleaning only a few love it and others stay back.

Cleaning is easy when you clean it just after cooking but it becomes a little tough when you keep it for later or if you burnt it.;

But, today I will show you the easiest ways to clean a cast iron grill pan with the items that are easily available in your home.

So, without any delay lets start cleaning.

  • 2 Conclusion
  • Other Ways To Strip Cast Iron

    Most cast-iron collectors who restore vintage pieces use a lye bath or electrolysis to strip old pans. However, these methods can be relatively dangerous, require specific equipment, and are overkill if you plan to strip only one pan.

    A more hands-off method for stripping a pan is placing it in an oven and running the self-cleaning cycle . However, the self-cleaning cycle has been known to cause damage to some ovens, so were hesitant to recommend this method.

    I tested three ways to strip a pan: using Easy-Off Professional Oven and Grill Cleaner, ammonia, and Bar Keepers Friend. Ammonia stinks and does not remove nearly as much crud as the other methods.

    Scrubbing the pan with Bar Keepers Friend and a stainless steel scrubber stripped the pan well. Its a good option if youre averse to using oven cleaner , but it requires a lot of elbow grease.

    Is It Ok To Use Soap

    The old conventional wisdom around cast iron is that soap is the enemy. Back when soaps were commonly made with harsh compounds like lye and vinegar, this was true, but most modern dish soaps, especially eco-friendly varieties, are perfectly safe so long as they dont contain any polishing agents. If you have residue or strong flavors in your pan that you cant eliminate with a stiff brush and some water, by all means lather up.

    That said, soap is by nature a de-greaser, and while it wont strip away seasoning, it will dry out the surface of your pan by eliminating the oil on your cooking surface. So only use it if you have to, and if you do, be sure to oil the pan afterwards.

    Ways To Maintenance A Cast Iron Grill Pan

    • Dishwasher; Unfortunately, a cast iron grill pan;is not dishwasher friendly cookware. While some non-stick pans;only stay without protective seasoning after such a cleaning, a grill skillet will probably rust after a few cycles.
    • High heat; Luckily, cast iron grill pans;can take high temperatures so that you can prepare your food even on the open flame.
    • Metal utensils; If your pan has a non-stick coating, you should avoid metal utensils while cooking to prevent scratching the surface. On the other hand, plastic wont damage your skillet.
    • Steel scrubbers Never wash your pan with steel wool to prevent any damages to the surface. Wash it with nylon scrubbers instead.
    • Lid; Never store your skillet with a lid on to prevent trapping moisture from the air inside. The result will probably be the appearance of rust on your cookware.
    • Water; Never leave water in your cast iron grill pan;after cooking. Unlike other cookware, which you can wash after soaking, this skillet will probably rust instead of becoming clean.
    • Acidic food It is highly recommended to avoid preparing acidic goods in a cast iron grill pan, especially before seasoning. You can wait for a while a seasoning builds up. So when you get a new cast iron pan, you should season it first. After that, even tomatoes cant ruin the protective coat.

    The 9 Best Oils For Seasoning Cast Iron

    You should only season a new cast iron pan, or if you dont like the food or cooking experience with your current pan.

    You can take a look at the handy list below to see which seasoning oil is best for you!

    Each has its own benefits and drawbacks, so take a look and determine which suits your needs.

    Brand

    Try La Tourangelle Grapeseed Oil

    This is one of the most popular choices, and our recommendation. Grapeseed oil has a high smoke point, so it will handle extremely high temperatures with ease. Youll quickly bond oil and pan with this one!

    Grapeseed oil also lacks a potent aroma or flavor, so it wont impact the taste of your cooking. Perfect for those who want a neutral flavor to their cast iron pan. Grapeseed oil is reasonably priced and a healthier oil, too!

    What Oil Should You Use

    In our tests over the years, weve used a variety of neutral oils to season cast iron, including canola , soybean, sunflower, linseed , grapeseed, refined coconut, vegetable oil blends, and vegetable shortening. They all work well to create a durable seasoning. According to Eric Decker, professor and department head of the Department of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, oils with increased levels of unsaturation will oxidize faster and make more polymers. So avoid using saturated fats, such as butter, which wont season properly.

    Some cast-iron experts we spoke to also said to avoid extra virgin olive oil because it begins to degrade at a lower temperature and can become sticky or develop off-flavors.

    3 Steps to Caring for Your Cast Iron Pan

    Cast-iron cookware needs a slightly different treatment than stainless steel, aluminum, copper, or non-stick coated pots and pans.;

    That’s because cast-iron in its raw form is quite porous and sensitive to excess moisture, which can cause rusting.;

    Our cast-iron pots, pans, and griddles require seasoning – we let thin layers of oil cook on the surface of cast-iron, and at high heats, these oils break down, oxidize, and polymerize into a hard, plastic-like coating around our pans. This seasoning helps protect the pan against moisture and offers some natural, non-stick qualities to the user.;

    Don’t let its ‘weakness’ discourage you, as cooking on iron pieces like a stovetop cast-iron griddle is entirely worth it. If treated well, a cast-iron cookware piece can last for several lifetimes, well over 100 years. You can use your cast-iron throughout your life and gift it down to your children to do the same – one piece might even make it all the way to your grandkids, too!;

    Non-stick coated pots and pans definitely cannot claim the same, and as their coating starts scratching after a year or two of regular pan use, they can leach harmful chemicals into your food.;

    Once you learn how to clean a cast iron griddle, the simple way, you’ll want to use it for everything, because it’s easy and gives great results, searing meats and other foods like no other.;

    How To Completely Strip A Cast Iron Pan

    If youve picked up a vintage pan that has decades of carbon buildup from burnt-on grease, you have a few ways to remove all that crud so that you can start fresh. But some of these methods are very time consuming, and others are outright dangerous. In our experience, weve found that the easiest way to strip cast iron is to use an oven cleaner solution, since its mostly hands-off.

    However, oven cleaners are highly toxic, and you should use them for this purpose only outside or in a well-ventilated space such as a garage. And you must wear rubber gloves, as oven cleaner can cause chemical burns. Most oven cleaners are lye-based , so their effect is similar to soaking your pan in a lye bath , but theyre easier and safer to use, and they require less equipment and setup.

    Wearing rubber gloves and a respirator mask, place the pan in a large trash bag. Carefully spray the oven cleaner over the entire surface of the pan inside and out, including the handle.

    Invert the pan and tie the bag closed. Let the pan rest for several hours, or up to 24 hours depending on the severity of the crud youre trying to remove.

    Wearing rubber gloves, carefully remove the pan from the bag. Rinse the pan and thoroughly scrub it inside and out using dish soap and a stainless steel scrubber. For good measure, scrub it with dish soap a second time and rinse it just to be sure youve removed all of the oven cleaner.

    Dont Move The Food Too Soon

    Never break the primary rule if you need to tug at your food, let it stay in the grill. It is obviously not ready to be turned. Once the meat or veggies effortlessly release, you will know that the moment for turning has come.

    On average, you should wait at least a minute or two before trying to move food. Always turn it halfway with tongs to check if it is time.

    That way, you will get desirable marks that add character to the grilled meat and veggies. Never rotate your food, or you will get diamond-shaped grill marks instead of lines.

    How to Clean and Season Cast Iron | Victoria Cast Iron

    Let’s start with a very basic premise that we can all agree on: A dirty cast iron pan needs to be cleaned. The question, then, is how. One of the most widespread beliefs is that you can’t use soap, and the reason you’ll usually be given for this is that soap is powerful enough to strip away the seasoning you’ve worked so hard to build up.

    Soap is good at washing away grease and dirt, so perhaps it’s understandable that people think it can also wash away seasoning, since the seasoning is essentially baked-on fat. But even though the seasoning started out as a fat, it’s been so thoroughly transformed that it’s no longer at risk of being stripped away by a bit of soap, especially not the gentle modern soaps we work with today.

    No, if you wanted to remove the seasoning, you’d need to either scour it with something very abrasive, like steel wool; heat it at a very high temperature for an extended period of time without any fat in it; soak it in a strong lye solution; or strip it via electrolysis. Suffice it to say, it takes quite a bit of effort to actually take the seasoning off a cast iron pan.

    But soap? Soap ain’t gonna do jack to that seasoning. We know, because we regularly wash our pans with soap at Serious Eats, and they’re as beautifully seasoned as ever.

    So grab your dish soap and a sponge* , and let’s get cleaning.

    Lodge Pro Logic Cast Iron Grill Pan

    The best way to clean a cast-iron grill pan that is friendly to your skin and rusty-free is to use baking soda and lemon juice.

    These two ingredients have a reputation for strong natural bleach that can remove grease and rusty spots effectively.

    With the acidity of lemon juice and mild alkali of baking soda, they are perfect for any daily cleaning tasks.

    Here is my cleaning mixture:

    . One tablespoon lemon juice.

    . One cup baking soda.

    . Plastic scraper and a brush.

    Mix the baking soda and lemon juice to create a nice blend paste and pour it on the rusty spots.

    Use the plastic scraper to rub the rusty spots, and cover each spot with a plastic wrap for a day.

    This would help the mixture to blend with the rust and soften its texture.

    After that, you need to remove the plastic wrap and use a brush to scrub the pan.

    At this time, these rusty spots will be scraped out easily. Once they are all removed, you can rinse them with water and season your grill pan.

    If you prefer a quicker and more effective way to get rid of all the dirty rusts, you can use a rust remover.

    However, when using it, you should be cautious as it can cause irritation to your skin and eyes.
