How To Clean Rusty Grill Grates
No one wants to eat food thats been cooked on rusty grill grates. Not only is it unappetizing, but cooking on rusty surfaces can also allow bacteria to enter the food. But the good news is that you can clean rust off your grill grates in just a few simple steps.
Tools and Materials Needed:
Collect all of the necessary cleaning supplies before heading outside to your grill.
Step 2: Make a Paste
After placing your rubber gloves on, make a thick paste of baking soda and vinegar in the plastic bowl by stirring the two ingredients together, adding small amounts of each until the mixture resembles the consistency of toothpaste.
Cover Your Gas Grill Between Use
Be sure to cover your grill in between uses with a cover as this will help to keep it clean and presentable, as well as prolonging its life.
A cover stops dust collecting, insects and even animals getting inside, and just generally protects it from the elements.
A good grill cover might seem like an unnecessary expense, but they more than pay for themselves by lengthening the time between grill replacements.

Cleaning The Grill Burners On Your Gas Grill
From time to time, depending on how often you grill, you may want to clean the burners on your Nexgrill. Over time, grease and food remains can cause blockages on your burners, and even small blockages have the potential to become a fire hazard.
One more time for common sense: BEFORE REMOVING THE BURNER FOR CLEANING, MAKE SURE THAT YOU DISCONNECT THE LP/NG TANK. AND PLEASE MAKE SURE THE RANGE TOP BURNER IS COOL BEFORE REMOVAL.
To remove the grill burner on your Nexgrill gas grill, remove the screws and the cotter clip that hold it in place. Set aside the screws and clip, and lift the burner out of the grill.
Clean the exterior of the burner with soapy water and a wire brush. Scrub stubborn remains with a metal scraper. Clear any clogged ports with a straightened paper clip.

After your clean burner has been allowed to dry, take extreme care to reinsert it correctly. Your burner must be centered with the gas supply orifice. Do not attempt to relight the grill if the burner is not correctly positioned within the gas supply orifice.
Finally, reattach the gas burner using the screws and cotter pin you set aside, and bingo! Clean grill burner.

Out of the many different types of grills, the varieties that heat using charcoal require the most cleaning. Keep charcoal grills in peak condition by cleaning them after each use and thoroughly cleaning before and after each grilling season.
After each use:
Charcoal ash gathers at the bottom of the grill every time it’s used, so you must clean the grill after each use. Built-up ash can block vents in the bottom of the grill, making it difficult to control cooking temperature and increase fire risks.
- Once the charcoal has cooled, remove the bricks and brush out the ash.
- Cleaning grill grates is best done with a long-handled stiff-wire brush. If you dont have a brush, ball up some aluminum foil and hold with long-handled tongs.
- Use a rag or folded paper towels to apply vegetable oil to the clean grates. This will help prevent rust and food build-up.
- Clean the inside of the grilling bowl and lid using mild dish soap and a steel brush.
Before and after each grilling season:
In addition to cleaning out old charcoal, keep your charcoal grill in peak condition with regular maintenance. Follow these cleaning tips at the beginning and end of each grilling season, performing more often as needed.
- Clean the outside of the lid and bowl using soap and water. You can also use grill cleaner. Towel dry to prevent rust.

Empty Ashes After Each Use
Clean out the residual ash in a charcoal grill after each use. A pile of ash left on the grill can collect moisture, and ash plus moisture can equal a cement-like substance that’s can be incredibly difficult to remove.
To make quick work of ash cleanup, keep a metal bucket with a lid next to the grill, and dump the ashes and spent coals into it when everything has cooled down. Store the bucket somewhere where it won’t get wet.
Transfer the collected ash to the garbage when the bucket is full and you’re positive there are no coals still burning. Ash disposal becomes even easier if you opt for lump charcoal since it creates relatively little ash when compared to briquettes.
Put Everything Back Together
This is the final step in this cleaning process. After cleaning everything, you need to put everything back together. You will love the view of the now clean gas grill. It will be clean and tidy, ready to start grilling fresh and delicious meals. You will definitely be set for few other grilling months.
With these simple steps, you can easily clean a gas grill. If possible, you should clean it when still warm. This way, grease, and oil will easily come out as opposed to when it is ice cold. Wipe Grime From The Burners
These are the burners themselves. Some grills make them easier to remove than mine if they come out easily, you can rinse these with your soapy water as well.
I didnt want to remove mine and risk messing things up, so I took my damp sponge and just wiped them down. I was surprised at how much grime came off. That grime can ultimately clog the burner if its not cleaned regularly.
Keep A Safe Temperature
Step 3: Soak the Grates
Once youve scraped off as much of the stuck-on food debris and carbon buildup as possible, remove the grates, place them in a bucket full of warm, soapy water, and allow them to soak for at least 20 minutes.
Step 4: Clean the Burner Hoods
While theyre usually not as dirty as the grill grates themselves, the burner hoodsthe plates located directly above the burnersneed to be kept clean, too. To get started, dip a sponge into the hot, soapy water and use the scouring pad side of the sponge to remove all of the grease and grime from each of the burner hoods.

Inspect All The Parts
The annual cleaning is a good time to inspect all the parts and replace any that are worn or damaged. Grill burners can eventually wear out, as can the heat deflectors and other parts. Hardware stores sell many of the parts necessary to tune up a grill, and the grill manufacturer may offer them for sale online.
Clean The Flavorizer Bars
Most grills have some sort of cover over the gas burners, and these are often named Flavorizer Bars, or sometimes heat diffusers, or simply metal plates.
Before their invention, lava rocks were used instead, which were a nightmare to clean and prone to flare-ups.
Nowadays, the Flavorizer Bars spread the heat more evenly and direct drippings away from the burner tubes. This not only creates more even cooking, but it helps to prevent flare-ups and stops the burners from clogging, so its essential to keep these guys clean.
The Flavorizer Bars are the most chastised part of the grill, because not only do they take full whack of the heat, but they also collect all of the marinade and drippings so do tend to get and look a bit grim over time.
Again, theres no secret technique here, just make sure these guys are removed from the grill and then scrub both sides with a scourer and warm soapy water.

Give The Grates An Extra Good Scrub With Your Brush
Most of us brush the grates before or after use, but this time really make sure to get all the chunks and charred meat flesh, and use a little extra force.
Use the metal scraper on your brush if necessary. This will help eliminate those stubborn chunks of carrion.
After youve brushed the top side real well, take the grates out. Youll notice the bottom needs a good scraping as well. Do so now and set them aside.

How Often Do I Clean The Outside Of My Grill
If you use your grill daily, clean the outside every one to two weeks. If you use the grill three to four times a week, clean it every two to four weeks. If you dont grill often, clean it every couple of months. Maybe once when you pull it out in the spring and right before you put it away for the fall. If the outside starts to look grimy and greasy, its time to clean your grill.
Wipe The Burners Clean
Now to the burner tubes.
These should have been adequately covered by the Flavorizer Bars or metal plates described above, so a gentle wipe with a sponge and warm soapy water should be enough.
While wiping them down, check to make sure none of the holes are clogged as this affects the flow of gas, causes uneven heating and inconsistent results from your grill.
So if you see any clogged holes, gently remove the dirt using a toothpick or an opened out paper clip to clear any blocked holes.

Clean Grates And Racks After Each Use
Cleaning chores are much easier if they are done often, after each use of the grill. This is critical with gas grills since the high temperatures can bake on grease and foods, making it challenging to clean the grates and racks once they cool and the grease hardens.
Make sure to clean these parts after every cooking session.
Choose Your Best Way To Clean Grill Grates
You dont need to use a specialized grill cleaner or harsh chemicals to clean your grill, even if its covered in charred grease and grime. When you clean the inside of your grill with baking soda, you can use a nylon-bristled brush, scourer sponge, a ball of aluminum foil, or even a paper towel or rag, depending on what you have available.

Important Notes On Maintaining Your Gas Grill
- Check your grease collection tray:Every time you grill, make sure the tray is not full, as that can lead to a dangerous grease fire.
- Brush the grill grates before grilling: After you preheat the grill, brush the grate with a grill brush or wadded piece of foil to remove the burnt bits of food from the last grilling session. Its easier to loosen the bits when the grates are hot.
- Oil the grate:Oil the hot grates before grilling so food doesnt stick.
- Brush the grates after grilling: If you have time, brush the grates one more time after grilling.
Soaking The Burner Hoods
Step 5: Remove the Grease Pan and Collection Tray
Next, remove the grease pan and collection tray located under the cook box. Then clean the collection tray and metal grease pan with hot, soapy water and a sponge.
Step 6: Remove Loose Debris
If any loose debris remains in the lower cook boxthe metal container that houses the burner hoodsremove and dispose of it in the trash.
Step 7: Clean All Surfaces
Now that all of the dirtiest parts of your grill have been attended to, its time to clean all of the remaining surfaces of your grill. Be sure to wipe down both inside and outside the lid, the control knobs, the shelves, and inside the cabinet with a sponge soaked in hot, soapy water.
To clean stubborn grease stains, spray a food-safe degreaser where needed , let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it away.
Step 8: Remove Soaking Pieces
Next, remove any grates or burner hoods you may be soaking and scrub them with the scouring pad on your sponge. If elbow grease still isnt doing the job in making them clean, spray with the food-safe degreaser, allow to sit for a few minutes, then try scrubbing them again. Repeat as needed.

How Do I Clean The Sides Of My Grill
Use a sponge to scrub the side of your grill with dish soap and water. If the stains wont come off, mix a paste with three parts baking soda and one part water. Coat the paste on the side of your grill and wait about 15 minutes. Then, wipe the grill clean. With stubborn stains, apply vinegar to the baking soda paste before letting it sit. It will help break down the tough grease and baked-on food.
How To Clean Your Grill’s Catch Pan
Always keep the bottom tray and grease catch pan of your gas grill clean and free of debris, advises Kolman. This not only prevents dangerous grease fires, it deters visits from unwanted critters. To do so, remove the bottom tray beneath the grill and set it above a large trash can. Then, gently scrape the inside of the grill with a putty knife, and push all resulting debris through the bottom. To deep clean the tray, use warm, soapy water and a fine steel wool pad, says Kolman.
