How To Marinate Shrimp For Grilling

How Long Can You Marinate Shrimp

How to Make Grilled Marinated Shrimp | Allrecipes.com

I recommend marinating the shrimp for 30 minutes or less since there is lemon juice in the marinade. The acid in the lemon juice will actually start to cook the shrimp if left to sit for too long and make the shrimp mushy.

That being said, the shrimp can be marinated for a few hours and up to overnight as long as you omit the lemon juice. Simply add the lemon juice up to 30 minutes before planning to cook. In either case, marinate in the fridge until youre ready to start cooking.

Six Steps To Grilling Shrimp

Raw shrimp on a skewer, ready for the grill – How to grill shrimp

1. For the best possible results, buy fresh shrimp on the day that you plan to grill them. Shrimp thaw quickly and can go bad even more quickly. Make sure that you buy either jumbo or colossal sized shrimp for easier grilling.

2.;Shrimp can be grilled with or without their shells. I like to peel the shrimp prior to grilling. Remove all of the shell except for the part that is around the tail of the shrimp. Removing the shell will allow the marinade to penetrate the meat and give the shrimp more taste.

3. Devein the shrimp by using a small, sharp knife to cut down the back of each peeled shrimp. Pull out the back vein while washing the shrimp under cold water. The vein is noticeable in jumbo or colossal shrimp.

4. Give the shrimp flavor in the marinade of your choice. My favorite is just a simple brush of olive oil on the shrimp with some salt, pepper and squeeze of lemon.

5. Thread your shrimp on a skewer for easy grilling. You can use a wooden skewer or metal skewer, both options work well.

Take the shrimp off the grill and it is time to enjoy, perfect for a shrimp cocktail or to pair with your favorite dipping sauce!

How To Peel And Clean Shrimp

You can cook shrimp with the shell on or off. If you want to peel off the shell, start by pulling off the legs and the shell can easily slip off. You can leave the shell on the tail or remove it, depending on your recipe.

Shrimp have a dark threadlike digestive tract running along their curved backs. You need to remove this after thawing and before cooking shrimp, otherwise you could get a bit of sandy grit in your meal. Here’s how to remove that vein with or without taking off the flavorful shell:

If you’re going to cook the shrimp in the shell, use kitchen scissors or a small sharp knife to cut through the shell along the back of the shrimp, from the head to the tail, then use the scissors or knife to lift out the vein. If you’ve removed the shell, just cut a slit along the back and remove the vein. If some sandy residue remains, you can easily rinse it away in cold running water.

    How To Cook Marinated Shrimp

Marinated shrimp can be grilled, baked, broiled, or sautéed. No matter which way you choose, cook the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side in medium-high heat, or until pink and opaque. You know theyre ready when the tails start to curl in.

Pro Tip: Jumbo shrimp will take longer to cook than medium size shrimp. Because of this, I recommend purchasing jumbo shrimp or prawns with the shell on. Snip the top with a pair of kitchen shears, remove the vein and marinate and cook with the shell on. This helps to trap in their juices.

    How Long To Marinate Shrimp

Shrimp, and any seafood, in general, do not need much time in a marinade to soak up the flavors.

In fact, if it sits in the marinade too long the acidic vinegar can start to essentially cook the shrimp which will mess with the texture in all the wrong ways. Thats something we want to actively avoid.

Lucky for us, that means this shrimp only needs to marinate for an hour. You could even get away with just 30 minutes too if youre in a hurry. Fresh shrimp is ideal but if you have frozen shrimp, its best to thaw it out before marinating or put it in the marinade, frozen, and leave it in a little longer than an hour so it has time to soak in.

    • Shrimp: You can use fresh or frozen shrimp with success. In fact, you do not even have to thaw the shrimp before marinating. The important part will be to make sure it is deveined.
    • Skewers: I used metal skewers which are wonderful to just throw in the dishwasher and reuse. If you are using wooden skewers, soaked them in water for about 15-20 minutes to help keep them from burning.
    • How do you know Shrimp is done? When the shrimp turns from a gray flabby color and texture to a pink, opaque, firm flesh with a red tail, your shrimp is done. Shrimp cooks fast so keep your eye on it. Do not overcook shrimp, it will become tough and rubbery.
    • Vegetables: Your vegetables may not be as done as youd like but you do not want to overcook the shrimp. You can keep your shrimp and vegetables separate on different skewers so you can keep grilling the vegetables if needed.
    • Give it space: You do not want to squish your ingredients together on your skewers. Give them space so that they grill evenly and all the way around.
    • Variations: Add sausages, mushrooms, eggplant, or other vegetables to mix it up.
    • Cook: You can pan cook this on your stovetop on medium-high heat. Cook till the shrimp and vegetables are done.

    Freezing Shrimp In The Marinade

Pour the marinade into a freezer-safe zip top plastic bag, then add the shrimp and freeze immediately.

Keeping the shrimp in the shell can help preserve the texture just remove the shells before cooking.

Also, lay the bag flat when freezing so the shrimp stays in a single layer. Store in the coldest part of your freezer and use;within 1 month of freezing.

Thaw in the refrigerator or under cold running water before cooking the shrimp, and be sure to discard any marinade that you won’t be cooking.
