How Much Cheese Is Enough
This is a very personal issue. Its possible to overdo it, but no one wants a skimpy grilled cheese, either. Theres plenty of space in the middle ground.
Two ounces of cheese per sandwich is a good rule of thumb, but a better rule of thumb is to eyeball it. Three ounces gives you a more decadent grilled cheese. Its your call!
Either way, grate as much cheese as you need to pile loosely on both slices of bread. A good, fluffy handful should do it.
How Hot Should Your Skillet Be
High heat will burn the exterior of your bread before your cheese gets a chance to melt. Moderate heat is the way to go.
Heres a timeline:
- Put your heavy skillet on the stovetop
- Turn the burner on medium-low or medium
- As the skillet heats, prep your cheese
- Butter the bread
- Lay the sandwich in the skilletby this time, the temperature is perfect
If you are grilling sandwiches one at a time, you may find you need to turn the heat down a little as you do your second sandwich. The pan seems to hit a sweet spot around sandwich number two.

How To Make The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Fluffy Mighty White or the fuller texture of artisan sourdough? Taleggio, Teifi or prepacked slices? And what is the best way to cook your sandwich: grill, griddle, frying pan or toastie machine?
Before you dive below the line to scoff at the cheek of publishing a recipe for something as basic as a simple cheese toastie, consider this. Any idiot with a frying pan can make a grilled cheese sandwich but how many are worthy of the enormous calorie load they pack? This is one recipe that deserves to be perfect; after all, if you eat too many of the things, life really will be too short to bother with a bad cheese sandwich.
For a start, as the good people of Twitter kindly inform me, the relationship between a cheese toastie and a grilled cheese sandwich is analogous, as Id assumed, to that between macaroni cheese and mac and cheese the latter being the bigger, brasher American version of our own, humbler family favourite. No, as Lynne Clark of the Greedy Piglet blog informed me, a grilled cheese sandwich is buttered on the outside and cooked in a pan, and the toastie is buttered on the inside and, well, toasted. As I dont own any variety of sandwich toaster for the sake of my health, this piece will concentrate on the fried variety .

Double Up On Your Fats
I know, its putting one more nail in the coffin of health for this meal. But the combination of oil and butter is key.
Preheat a tablespoon of oil in the pan while you butter the bread all the way to the edges with whipped or softened butter. Some people prefer mayonnaise for the job, which is fine, but Im just a dairy gal through and through.
When the solid butter hits the liquid oil, it starts a time-release reaction that slowly toasts the bread, letting it soak up all that tasty buttery flavor while the cheese melts. And speaking of slow

How Do You Avoid Making A Mess
If youre not careful, you can end up with a disaster situation like this:
Imagine hand washing the ironing board cover. What a sad use of time. These stains happened because I wasnt careful with where I put the foil after I placed my buttered bread on it. I got distracted and accidentally turn over the foil which smeared grease on the board. The damage was exacerbated when my hot iron picked up the butter and spread it everywhere.
Heres what you can do to avoid these greasy stains:
- Add extra layers of foil beneath your workspace: This is the easiest and safest step to protect the covering and avoid leaks. Use paper towels or newspapers if you dont have extra foil.
- Add a towel under the foil to absorb any drips: This option is kind of bad etiquette. Nonetheless, a towel with one or two grease stains is easier to launder than the iron board covering.
WARNING: Dont attempt this recipe if you believe you are clumsy and therefore may damage the furniture or burn yourself with the iron. Get takeout instead!

Using the very best ingredients is important when making any type of grilled cheese. My family prefers wheat bread, and I like to use salted butter for extra flavor.
Also, none of those plastic-y American singles around here! Yeah, I used them back in the day, too until I found out that theyre only required to contain a minimum of 51% real cheese and may contain as many as 15 different added ingredients. Um, gross and NO THANKS
Sargento Sliced Cheese is 100% real, natural cheese, and in my opinion, its the best thing since sliced bread. See what I did there?!

Bread and cheese have been a staple for people for thousands of years. References can be found that people used to enjoy bread and cheese for dinner on various occasions in the past. In fact, an old roman cookbook even had a recipe that said to combine the two and enjoy for dinner.
The usage of the term melted cheese sandwich started in 1902. However, it wasnt until 1910 that a combination of cheese and ham in between two slices of bread officially made it to the menu of a French restaurant. They called it the Croque Monsieur.
Since then, the grilled sandwich started to gain popularity and soon became a widely loved dish across the world. It was almost on Americas every menu in the 1900s.
It was Walter Gerber;of;Thun,;Switzerland, who invented processed cheese in 1911, although it was;James L. Kraft;who first applied for an American patent for his method in 1916. The first ever commercially available sliced processed cheese, was created & introduced in 1950 by Kraft Foods. That was just the beginning for the world of cheese sandwiches.

Where Do You Find The Equipment
I found the iron and ironing board in the closet of our room. The motel served breakfast every morning with paper plates and plastic cutlery. I swiped a few plates for cooking on and reused the plastic cutlery after washing it with the hotel bar soap.
The aluminum/aluminium foil was the most challenging. We didnt want to buy a roll of foil from the supermarket. Thankfully, Alex stumbled on some foil, which worked out well. If you dont want to buy the smallest roll at the supermarket, you can ask the hotel reception if they have foil. Or pack a few sheets in your luggage, which should be easy to carry considering foil is extremely thin and light.
