So I did a test with my 8-year old Weber Q3200 grill. I was using it almost every day and didnt clean it for about 3 months.

I know what youre thinking, I was just too lazy to clean it.

No, believe it or not, this was purely for testing purposes!

There was so much burnt food and grease inside the cook box that one time the whole grill started burning when I was preheating it.

I immediately turned off the gas and kept the lid closed until the fire went off. But this is definitely a safety risk and your food will also get ruined.

So its best to follow this guide and keep your grill clean!

How Do I Clean The Sides Of My Grill

Use a sponge to scrub the side of your grill with dish soap and water. If the stains wont come off, mix a paste with three parts baking soda and one part water. Coat the paste on the side of your grill and wait about 15 minutes. Then, wipe the grill clean. With stubborn stains, apply vinegar to the baking soda paste before letting it sit. It will help break down the tough grease and baked-on food.

1. Remove the grill grates, along with any heat-dissipating panels and other easily removable parts. Weber grills often have a set of flavorizer bars above the burners that youll want to remove, for example. These parts may have a decent amount of rust, but as long as they dont come in direct contact with food, thats okay. Well still give them a good clean, but you arent likely to get them back to their original steel shine. As long as the burners and bars do not have holes or pitted areas, these parts will work just fine, Kolman says. Issues occur when they are pitted, have holes and are breaking apart.

2. Put some of your dish detergent in a large bucket and fill it with warm water. Toss in the grates, heat panels, and flavorizer bars and let them soak for a few minutes. If your grates are made of bare cast-iron instead of stainless steel, you dont want to soak themit can ruin the seasoning. Leave them aside for now.

Weber Grill Restoration: Interior And Exterior Kettle Cleaning

Cleaning years of crud out of someones old Weber BBQ is not a fun job. BUT, with a little TLC the end results can be downright shocking and well worth the effort. Even kettles that have been neglected for 30+ years can be brought back to life with a little steel wool and a razor scraper. This is all thanks to the extremely durable porcelain enamel finish present on all Weber kettle grills. This enamel is the same material used inside most household ovens and resists scratching, cracking and chipping even under extreme heat.

Although the two are drastically different in terms of scratch resistance I like to think of the kettles finish as a paint job on a high-end car. In order to get it looking really good you want to remove as many of the tiny surface contaminants as possible just like a detailer would. This article will show you how to do just that with a few basic cleaning tools.

First off I would like to introduce the kettle being used in todays demo. This is a no date stamp red MBH kettle that I found on craigslist in early January. Its clearly seen better days and at one point the previous owner even decided to eye ball some rattle can paint onto a few areas to cover damage. Thanks to the Age Guide we know this particular kettle was made sometime around 1978.

At first glance this poor kettle is a bit of a pooch! but dont give up just yet its time to get down to business!

    Cleaning The Flavorizer Bars

Flavorizer bars catch drippings that smoke and sizzle, adding flavor to your food. Any drippings that are not vaporized by the Flavorizer bars are funneled away from the burners. This helps prevent flare-ups inside of your grill, and protects the burners from getting clogged.

  • Scrape the Flavorizer bars with a plastic scraper.
  • If necessary, brush the Flavorizer bars with a stainless steel bristle grill brush.
  • Remove Flavorizer bars and set aside.

Grease Food And Moisture Can Take A Toll

Keeping stainless steel kitchen appliances smudge-free and shiny is hard enough. Keeping a stainless steel gas grill pristine requires even more time and attention. Its outdoors, exposed to the elements sometimes year-round. That exposure is just one reason stainless steel becomes tarnished. Grease, food particles, and moisture all take their toll on stainless, says Cindy Fisher, who oversees grill testing at Consumer Reports.

If youre going to do just one thing for your stainless grill, keep it clean, says Kevin Kolman, a spokesman for Weber, which makes grills with both stainless and porcelain-enameled lids. In addition to helping the stainless hold its shine, regular cleaning helps preserve its resistance to corrosion.

The more you use your grill and the harsher the environmental conditions, the more youll need to clean it. Salt air speeds up corrosion and rust, so regular maintenanceat least weeklyis especially important if you live near the ocean. Chlorine from a nearby swimming pool can also damage a grills finish if its not cleaned regularly.

Stainless steel varies in quality, and manufacturers may use different grades for different parts of the grill. That explains why maintenance advice may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and grill to grill. Be sure to check your manual or the manufacturers website for how to handle discoloration, tough stains, and rust on your grill.
