The All New Original Pk Grill & Smoker: The Verdict
The All New Original PK Grill & Smoker is a great entry-level grill and smoker combo. It helped grilling rookie me create dishes that you’d expect from a pro and I bet a grilling pro would be able to make even more use out of it than I have.
It’s compact, easy to use, heats up quickly, and has plenty of vents to offer control over cooking temperature and time. Even if it does take a little more time than expected to set up, that time is well-worth the grilled and smoked meats and veggies the grill can create.

Pk New Original Grill & Smoker / $600
It might seem odd for something to be both “new” and “original”, but with a design that dates back to the original PK cast aluminum grill from 1952, this certainly qualifies. Like the original Original, it has a rustproof, cast aluminum structure, now with a new cast-in Durahinge design that won’t rust or break. It’s 3″ inches taller, with a wider, more precise seal on the lid, an interior ash compartment, improved airflow management, more shelf space, aluminum wheels with rubber tires, and a more ergonomic Durabilium handle. Despite the changes, it still excels at both direct, high-heat, and indirect, low-and-slow cooking, and has a 20-year warranty, meaning it might be the last grill you ever need to buy.

The Original Pk Grill & Smoker

We purchased the Original PK Grill & Smokerso our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.
Whether you prefer grilling or smoking your food, theres nothing like a backyard BBQ. One popular product promises to perform both functions welland its portable to boot. I put the Original PK Grill & Smoker to the test to see how it handled meats and more. Not only did I judge its versatility, but I also rated its setup process and heat retention.
What’s Less Ideal About The Original Pk Grill & Smoker
Budget plenty of time for assembly
Unboxing the grill was, admittedly, a fun experience. It started with the interior of the box, which said, “This is going to be good.” The fun continued there was a piece of styrofoam embossed with “Welcome to the club” next to the owner’s handbook.
But it wasn’t all fun and games. I’d read in some reviews that this grill took just 10 minutes to assemble but that was not my experience. Unboxing, unwrapping and assembling each component, and cart setup took about three-quarters of an hour.
This was, in part, due to confusing instructions. Even my husband an engineer-turned-architect scratched his head at times. We ultimately discovered that some steps and diagrams were either incorrect or missing. I caught a few pieces of tape within the smoking capsule that were difficult to detach they would have melted while cooking and added a strange smell to the meat and a few screws that weren’t completely finished by the factory that took some time and whittling to fix.
Make sure you have the right tools and fuel
If you dont already have grilling tools on-hand, especially gloves and tongs, youll want them. I borrowed my dads tools he is what youd call a grill power user but not charcoal, smoking chips, or a firestarter.

The Grill That’s Better Than Gas Pellet Kamado And Other Charcoal Grills
GAS GRILLS: Gas grills are convenient to turn on and off, but you cant get flavor from a gas flame. The smoky flavor that burning wood or charcoal imparts to grilled foods IS the point of outdoor cooking. Additionally, many gas grills are manufactured out of inexpensive sheet metal components which will break or rust over time. $500 to $1000 to replace a rusted or broken gas grill every few years adds up.
PELLET GRILLS: Pellet grills can produce a little more flavor than gas grills can, but they must use mechanical augers to feed the tiny pellets into the cook chamber. These augers are prone to jamming and breakage as are the electronic components required to control their operation. Pellet grills require electricity to run which makes them much less portable. With a pellet grill, forget about cooking at the campsite, beach or tailgate without a generator.
KAMODO GRILLS: Ceramic egg-type grills have become very popular and they cook well. Unfortunately, kamado grills are made of porcelain, making them extremely heavy, fragile and not very portable. And once a Kamado gets hot, it stays hot for a long time which makes it hard to modulate the temperature. A cast aluminum PK Grill can efficiently increase or decrease temps with the smart use of venting and fuel.
What Separates This Grill From Other Pk Grills
Now that you know what makes the Original PK better than other types of grills, what separates it from our other grills?
The Original PK is the wise grandmother of our PK Grill line. An old school cooker with all the stories that cooks like crazy and just won’t stop.
- The Original employs sliding vents and a squatty cart that some people don’t like, but she’s too old to care what other people think.
- The Original PK is shorter than our other grills, about the same height as a comparable kettle grill.
- She has 310 sq in. of cooking space so you can cook plenty of food for a regular-sized family with no problem.
- The Original PK is not quite as voluminous as the PK360 , but she says it suits her just fine.
- The Original PK combines a classic look with old school touches, which means there is nothing new-fangled or fancy about an Original PK Grill. It just does what it is supposed to do. It cooks great and lasts a long time.
It’s no wonder it’s one of the most beloved outdoor cookers ever to come down the pike.

What’s Good About The Original Pk Grill & Smoker
It’s compact, effective, and stands up to the elements
The fully assembled grill stands at just over 37 high, with the cooking surface standing 30 off the ground. The cooking surface itself is is 22.35″ and 16.21 deep. That isnt as much surface area as some grilling pros may be used to, but the small size has a benefit the grill heats up quicker, and cooks quicker, than larger grills do. While I wasn’t able to get all my steak onto the grilling surface at once as intended, each batch cooked quickly enough to make up for it. The grill is also sleek and compact, making it perfect for a smaller backyard or balcony.
It’s also easily transportable, which I put to the test when multiple rainstorms weeks in a row forced a venue change. The grill sat uncovered for a few weeks before I transported it to Brooklyn, then Long Island, for a cookout. PK Grills claims that the capsule is rustproof and backs the grill with a 20-year warranty while I only left it for two or three weeks, the grill looked as good as new afterwards, save for a little bit of mud.
It has handy features and upgrades that make cooking a breeze
Original Pk Grill & Smoker Vs Weber Original Kettle Premium 22
Both of these models are excellent grills that are easy to use to cook great meals. The Weber grill boasts the classic charcoal grill dome shape and is much more economical than the PK Grill$165 compared with around $370.
However, the PK Grill doubles as a smoker, has more grilling space, and offers more consistent temperature control. Its also easier to move around, as its wheels are larger and more maneuverable. For these reasons, I prefer the PK Grills product.
Yes, buy it!
The Original PK Grill & Smoker is an awesome option for outdoor cooking. Its portable, great-looking, and most importantly, cooks like a champ.

Portability And Storage: Bbq To Go
The PK Grills portability is one of its best features. The capsule easily lifts off the cart, so its ideal for a camping trip or a tailgate. The cart is compact and sturdy, with two rubber wheels on one side. It is just about effortless to move around, both on its stand and off. We were able to quickly wheel it in and out of our storage shed, and it didnt take up too much space.
The stand has two built-in storage features: a small aluminum side table, which can hold some grilling tools and a plate or bowl of food prepped for the grill, and a large aluminum shelf underneath the grill capsule. I found that grilling was much more convenient thanks to these surfaces, though I did wish the side table was a bit larger. While I fit tongs, a spatula, and a plate of burgers on it, the items were a bit crowded and somewhat precariously positioned.
