Tips For The Best Grilled Cheese

  • Low heat it takes a little patience to make the perfect grilled cheese. Keep your heat on low to give the cheese time to fully melt while the bread gets golden and crisp. If browning too fast, turn the heat down.
  • Butter generously the amount of butter may seem like a lot, but it is important for a crispy exterior.;
  • Use thick-sliced bread we love using Texas toast because its sliced about twice as thick as normal sandwich bread. You want bread that is about 3/4 to 1 thick, but also avoid bread that is too thick or your cheese wont melt properly. How Do You Make Grilled Cheese Evenly

The trick for making grilled cheese evenly is to allow your pan to heat up slowly. Although your sandwich will be ready at a much faster rate if you turn the heat up to high, its best to have patience when it comes to making the perfect grilled cheese. Let the pan heat over medium-low heat for even heat distribution, which will allow for a golden brown exterior and melty cheese center.

Its also essential to make sure your bread is covered edge to edge with butter so that each side of the sandwich browns evenly.

This is a very personal issue. Its possible to overdo it, but no one wants a skimpy grilled cheese, either. Theres plenty of space in the middle ground.

Two ounces of cheese per sandwich is a good rule of thumb, but a better rule of thumb is to eyeball it. Three ounces gives you a more decadent grilled cheese. Its your call!

Either way, grate as much cheese as you need to pile loosely on both slices of bread. A good, fluffy handful should do it.

It is also wise to buy a special tool like the Toaster Oven Pro with Light Inside which will help in monitoring the process clearly without any hassle at all!

    2. Always preheat the baking sheet:; A preheated baking pan will ensure that both sides cook evenly while also preventing sticking from occurring at all; just remember this one crucial thing: if using butter/margarine as opposed to cooking spray , always coat each side before placing in step 2 above so nothing burns when we turn over our masterpiece later down road line

    4. Use good quality cheese for your bread: like Provolone or Havarti and never use shredded as theyll melt into a puddle of gooey mess on top! How To Master A Classic Grilled Cheese

    Here are our tips for getting this classic comfort food just right.

    A grilled cheese presents its elements bare, without the safety net of side dishes or elaborate presentation. It’s a showcase for the cheese; select one that melts evenly, such as cheddar, Swiss, or Monterey Jack. That said, almost any cheese will do. After all, even if eating the sandwich gets messy, it’ll be polished off quickly — another triumph of the true art of cooking.

    Choose breads and accompaniments that will flatter the cheese. The bread should be thick enough that it’s crisp outside and soft inside, but not so hefty as to bury the cheese. A slightly acidic or tart partner, such as slices of tomato or pickle, will nicely offset the cheese’s richness. Go with a dressy classic, such as croque monsieur, or create an uncomplicated pairing, such as Swiss with turkey and mustard.

    To properly melt the cheese without burning the bread, cook the sandwich on one side over medium-low heat; flip it as it begins to turn golden brown. Grill the other side, then flip the sandwich back onto the first side to reheat. Grilling both sides at once, whether in a sandwich press or using a second heated skillet to press the sandwich as it cooks, is efficient but yields a much denser texture.

    Finish Your Grilled Cheese With A Crispy Cheesy Outer Crust

    This is a trick that my grandmother Mimi used to pull off. Maybe you have encountered it at a restaurant and wondered how it works. It can be a little tricky, depending on how non-stick your pan is. If you have a well-seasoned cast iron skillet, its worth a shot.

    Simply sprinkle some additional grated cheese over your buttery skillet, and flip the hot sandwich over on top of it. Listen, and once the cheese has stopped sizzling, wait a few more moments longer before flipping it back over. Ta da.

    Non-stick skillet notes: I have always recommended using cast iron or stainless steel skillets when possible, since theyre non-toxic. When I worked on this post, Id been testing out a non-stick ceramic skillet from Green Pan. While it was non-stick enough to successfully make these sandwiches, Im no longer recommending this pan. See the section on ceramic non-stick pans over here.
