Automatic Gas Shutoff Valves On Water Heaters Temperature

How To Shut Off Natural Gas Valves

Above is a Watts 210-5 automatic gas shutoff valve installed at the temperature-pressure relief valve on a gas fired residential water heater.

The gas piping has not been connected. Gas supply piping is passed to the Watts 201-5 and from it outlet onwards to the water heater’s own gas controls and burner.

The Watts 201-5 valve shown will shut off the gas supply if water temperature exceeds 210°F.

Details about this gas fired water heater automatic gas shutoff valve are at AUTOMATIC GAS WATER HEATER SHUTOFF – temperature operated gas supply shutoff for water heaters, Watts 210-5 series.

Connecting To The Natural Gas Stub

Basically, a stub out is the part of a pipe that extends out from the wall that allows you to connect a device to it. It is safe to leave it capped until you need it, and some of them are never used. Once your gas is turned off, you will uncap the stub out and safely attach your gas grill line to it. Here is a quick rundown of the steps to do that, but first, you already know working with gas lines is dangerous, so it bears repeating frequently, turn off the gas first and follow all safety protocols. If this isnt your comfort zone, reach out to a professional company like ours to help.

Step connect your natural gas grill to the stub out:

  • Safely turn off your gas to the home.
  • Turn off the shut-off valve at the location. Attach a shut-off valve if the stub out doesnt already have one attached. In some cases, this is required by code.
  • Uncap the stub out. You can use two wrenches, one to hold the valve and the other to unscrew the cap to prevent leaks.
  • Connect the stub-out gas valve to the connection on your grill using a hose made for this exact purpose. The best hoses are stainless steel coated with polymers. If you are providing your own you want to know that it should extend as straight as possible. You dont want it too long so that it curves or bends. Use a pipe compound formulated or safe for use with natural gas on the threads.

The Good The Bad And The Ugly Of Direct Gas Grill Lines

When my husband and I first decided to go with a natural gas grill that hooked up directly to our home gas system, we were thrilled to say farewell to propane canisters and the hassle of refilling them. But a 600° overnight mistake has me wondering if it was such a great idea.

We had family visiting and, after enjoying a delicious steak dinner, my husband, the grill master, failed to turn off the grill. This was after he had turned it up to high to burn off the steak remnants left on the grill.

The next morning as we readied for a day of boating, my sister-in-law went outside to retrieve something and made the discovery. The grill was so hot the siding on our house behind it was melting.

I shudder to think what might have happened if she hadnt gone out there and we had left the grill on all day long . We might have had a serious fire with our pet dog and cat at home to face it alone. So, what are the pros and cons of connecting a grill to your natural gas line?

    Advantages of natural gas grilling

    • Youll never run out of fuel even during your biggest barbecue .
    • Natural gas is less expensive than propane.
    • You no longer have to lug heavy propane tanks back and forth for filling.
    • Natural gas is classified as a greenhouse gas, so its environmentally friendly.

    Disadvantages of natural gas grilling

What to know before you go for it

First, natural gas grills and propane grills are not the same thing, so be sure to shop for the right type.

Abandoned Gas Shutoff Valves May Be Very Dangerous

492008 Half Inch Natural Gas Ball Shut Off Valve

Gas valves might be found be left in place when an appliance has been removed.

Watch out: If the gas valve does not include a lock to prevent it from being opened, the gas pipe should be capped so that the valve cannot be opened to let explosive gas into the building.

Our photo shows a “live” natural gas line in an old house in Newburgh, New York.

Someone who doesn’t know better might open this valve, causing a serious or potentially fatal explosion in the building.

Gas surprises: Gas light and gas fireplace lines and valves may be “live” in older homes which used natural gas to supply energy to gas fireplaces or even to gas lights.

Never assume that an old gaslight fixture is safe and that the piping does not contain gas.

Often these fixtures were converted to electricity, having wires run conveniently through existing gas piping.

But an old gas fixture that has not been electrified may still release dangerously explosive gas into a building.

    Finding The Shutoff Valves

Some things in life are worth learning before its too latelike the locations of your water and gas shutoff valves. Now granted, these shutoff valves are often hidden in some dark, creepy corner of the house. But if a water pipe springs a leak, knowing where the shutoff valve is could save you thousands in water damage repairs. Whats more, you cant make those major plumbing repairs or improvements unless you first turn off the water. The same goes for turning off the gasthough with some strict safety precautions, which well talk about later.

Home water and gas systems contain two types of shutoff valves: main or master shutoff valves for stopping the flow of gas or water to the entire house, and individual or supply shutoff valves for specific appliances and fixtures. Well look at both types and tell you how to identify them , where they are and how to operate them.

Youll notice this story contains a lot of oftens, usuallys and almost alwayss. Thats because valves vary greatly in location, shape and number, depending on the age of your house, the local codes and which part of the country you live in. This article covers the basics of each system.

Does A Natural Gas Grill Need A Regulator

" Propane or Natural Gas 1/4" " Quick Connect Kit

For safety reasons, invest in a regulator for your natural gas grill. Natural gas grills require a pressure rating of 4 WC .

When you run the gas to different appliances like your water heater, furnace, or gas grill, pressure regulators decrease the PSI so that your gas lines remain intact. This is why its important to regulate the pressure running to your gas grill. Natural gas is supplied by your city or county at a specific pressure. Consult your contractor to determine this pressure.

Visual Signs Of Lp Gas Leakage At An Appliance Gas Valve

Even if the natural gas or LP Gas is shut off or no longer supplying an appliance, stains at the gas piping such as we show below this little LP gas shutoff at a water heater may indicate a history of leaks at the gas pipe connections.

In this case we found that a damaged, grooved mating face on a flare fitting had caused many years of slow gas leakage at this valve. T

he black stains at the flare fitting and copper tubing at the left side of the valve were pointed-to by the gas delivery driver as evidence of a history of gas leaks.

The repair required replacement of a flare fitting and re-making the joint.

    Overview Of Gas Valve Installation

Gas shut off valves, also known as supply valves, are located either at the exterior of the house or just inside the home. There should also be shut-off valves near every appliance that uses gas or propane such as a gas range, gas fire pit or gas logs in a fireplace. Just to clarify, gas shut-off valves can also be known as gas shut off or gas shutoff valves. The term gas turn off valve is also used. The terms are interchangeable.

The gas shut-off valve just outside of the home near the natural gas meter is called the main valve and should have been installed by the gas company at the time the home was built or when the equipment was updated over the years.

This page of Costimates includes cost factors, price estimates from around the internet and a DIY or Not suggestion. We include reader-submitted prices too, so please consider bookmarking this page to return and share your project cost for the benefit of other readers.

Note: Areas that are prone to earthquakes, such as California, often require a special type of gas shut-off valve called excess flow valves or EFV. These valves are much more expensive than the typical main or appliance shut-off valves. The price to install the excess flow valves, aka seismic gas valves, can be $500 to $1,000 or more, depending on site conditions and the ease to access the main gas line.

    Gas Grill Piping/Valve, Take 2

    2018/11/22 Sparky said:

Can a shut off valve that is marked LP on the handle be used as a natural gas shut off valve? The color of the handle is red and I have seen yellow colored handles before and wanted to know the difference.

Reply: Yes but check the valve markings or labeling for use with gas piping – do NOT rely on the color of the valve handle

    Sparky

Gas valves intended for use as shutoff controls for either LP or Natural Gas are marked with specific sampings that identify them as gas shutoffs. In North America look for an AGA stamp on the gas shutoff valve body or in Canada, a CSA stamping along with additional stamps and marks we will discuss here.

How To Locate Your Main Gas Service Shutoff Valve

Knowing the location of your main gas service shutoff valve will help you turn off the gas supply to your entire facility quickly in case of an emergency.

The location of the valve can vary depending on the type of building and when it was installed:

    • The gas meter and gas service shutoff valve is usually located on the side or in front of the building. If the building has a breezeway, it could be located there.

    Gas Shutoff Valve

    • In some cases, the gas meter can be located in a cabinet enclosure built into the building or located inside the building. In these cases, the gas service shutoff valve can be located outside on a section of gas service pipe next to the building, or near the gas meter.

    Cabinet Meter

    Cabinet Meter Outside

    • If there are multiple meters serving gas to multiple units within a building, there are individual gas service shutoff valves for each unit near each of the gas meters, including a master valve for the entire building where the gas pipe comes out of the ground. Your facilities personnel or your property manager might be able to help you locate your units valve location.
