Do Traeger Grills Use Propane

It’s Cantankerous As Hell

How a Traeger Wood Pellet Grill Works

One reason for the Timberline 850’s exorbitant price is its integrated smarts. The machine can connect to your home’s Wi-Fi network. It also comes with its own temperature probe. That, combined with the Traeger app, allows you to monitor food during a cookout. The app has a large library of recipes. More than mere reference material, these recipes can act as cooking programs the grill will automatically run.

The Traeger app can send recipes to the grill for automatic cooking.

Despite the Timberline’s sophistication, it still needs a human hand from time to time. During long smoking sessions, pellets can get stuck to the sides of the pellet hopper. That can cause the grill’s fire to sputter. This, in turn, can cause the Timberline to feed an excess of unburned pellets into its firebox.

That can result in a dangerous situation that Traeger calls “over-firing.” Over-firing, or combustion of too many wood pellets at once, is a house fire risk. There’s even been one report of a Traeger pellet grill exploding as a result. ;;

Cost Of Wood Pellet Grills

A quality wood pellet grill costs about $300, and prices range up to about $2,000. The main differences is the size of the grill. More expensive wood pellet grills give you more room to cook. Another difference may be advanced technology, like wireless-enabled grills that allow you to change the grill’s temperature from anywhere.

Price Ease Of Use And Other Considerations

The grills featured here are not equivalent in size. This doesnt impact their ability to make great meat, but it does affect the price. The pictured Big Green Egg is the $559 small and has only 133 square inches of cooking real estate. Traegers $800 Texas Elite 34;has a 22-by-19-inch;main grilling surface for 418 square inches to cook on. That makes it loosely equivalent, in terms of the amount of meat you can get on there, to the $1,200 Big Green Egg XL.;

While the Egg can use any natural lump charcoal, Traeger strongly recommends that you stick to its own brand pellets. Neither fuel source is quite as universally available as propane canisters or charcoal briquets, but neither is terribly hard to find, either. Both are available at my local hardware store and you can buy both from Amazon Prime, with free delivery. I havent noticed more cost in fuel for either grillyou can be pretty economical with both if youre good about only lighting them when youre ready to cook, then shutting them down immediately when youre finished.;

Youll need an outdoor outlet or long, three-prong extension cord for the Traeger. With the egg, you only need to be able to reach it with that hair dryer.;

The Traeger is ready to smoke, grill,;or roast out of the box. To smoke on the Egg, youll need the $110+ plate setter accessory, a metal dog bowl to hold water under the grill,;and a separate bag of wood chips.;

    I Ditched My Gas Grill For A Wood Pellet Grill And This Is What Happened

    Thinking about buying a wood-fired smart grill with Wi-Fi? Here are some things to consider based on my experience switching from a gas grill.

    The Traeger Ironwood 650 and my old Weber.

    At one time, way back when, I was a charcoal-grill guy. But for the last 15 years or so, I’ve gone with a gas grill, upgrading to a midrange Weber Genesis around 2009. But last year when Traeger asked if I wanted to try its “smart” Ironwood 650;wood-pellet grill, I took the plunge. As a longtime charcoal and gas grilling aficionado, I was completely new to the pellet-grilling experience. Now, many months in, I still wouldn’t call myself a seasoned pitmaster like my colleague Brian Bennett, who tests grills for CNET at his Kentucky home, but I’ve become more proficient — or at least more adventurous.;

    There will always be a debate over the best grill type, and some people are hardcore in their preferences — my stepfather-in-law was a charcoal guy through and through and would scoff at any suggestion of moving onto something else. But in recent years there’s been a trend toward pellet grills, with Traeger, which developed the original wood pellet grill back in 1987, and Camp Chef among the leading brands — and even Weber has embraced pellet grilling with its SmokeFire line.

    Do Pellet Grills Produce Carbon Monoxide

    If you use a woodstove, pellet stove, hydronic heater, boiler, or fireplace, the devices must be properly installed, vented, and serviced regularly to avoid potentially hazardous situations. A chemical reaction that produces carbon monoxide gas can occur when wood pellets are stored.

    What If I Don’t Want Everything To Taste Super Smoky

    What Makes Traeger The Best Pellet Grill?

    You can actually decide how smoky your food will taste. The higher the temps the grill is set to, the less smoke there will be. Food cooked at temps between 165° – 225°F is going to have more smoke flavor than food cooked at higher temps.

    This smoker makes you feel like an instant pit master. I was skeptical of what I would be able to do with this pit as I have only ever used charcoal or gas grills. The first thing I smoked was a brisket and it turned out so good. My parents and family loved it. The second brisket was even BETTER. From classic BBQ, to beer can chicken, salmon, mac and cheese, jalapeño poppers, and brownies, this thing makes everything taste incredible. Honestly, I have no reason to ever buy BBQ again and I live in Texas! Nathaniel J., TX

    Can You Use A Traeger As A Grill Or Just A Smoker

    Absolutely. It can do both of those things and more!

    Traeger boasts their grills are a 6-in-1 grill. All of their grills can:

    • Grill
    • Braise
    • Barbeque

    Because it heats using indirect heat, grilling is a bit slower than on a traditional grill.

    Because it is an electric grill, it cant get as hot as a charcoal grill or even a propane grill. Trager grills get up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit .

    Charcoal grills can get well over 650 degrees and gas grills can get between 600 to 650 degrees.

    Of course, charcoal and gas grills also allow for two-zone cooking, where you can leave one side cooler than the other. This lets you grill over direct, very hot heat or indirect, lower heat.

    So while you can grill on a Traeger, if you are only going to use it for grilling, you may be better off purchasing a gas or charcoal grill. You may not have as much control over the temperature setting itself, but you have more control over whether you cook with direct or indirect heat.

    You can even grill veggies on it, just like you would your traditional grill.

    But you dont want to burn them. Read this recent article on my site for tips on how to grill delicious, perfectly cooked veggies.

    Just click that link to read it on my site.

    Note: You cant actually burn anything in the Traeger. Again, because it uses indirect heat. But you can overcook it. Wood pellet grills produce a varying amount of smoke based on the cooking temperature.

    Troubleshooting Problem #: Why Isn’t The Fan Working

    With Traeger troubleshooting, the fan not working can be for a number of different reasons. First, it could be that you don’t have any power running to the orange wires from the controller.

    Second, the problem could stem from grease on the shaft of the fan, which stops it from running due to disuse. To combat this problem, you might spin the fan a couple of times to loosen it and get it working.

    How Do You Use A Traeger Pellet Grill

    Joe Traeger is the inventor of the wood pellet grill. He came up with the idea shortly after he noticed his gas grill was in flames as he was preparing to cook for his family.

    That was in 1988. Today Traeger Grills has expanded to several different models of grills, from their Pro Series to their Timberline Series.

    And Traeger has become the most well-known brand on the market. Pellet grills give consumers the flavor of wood smoke with the convenience of a gas grill.

    Wood pellet grills use real wood, all-natural wood pellets as fuel. Unlike propane, natural gas, or charcoal grills, burning pellets is not harmful to the environment. They come in a variety of flavors and are FDA approved.

    With several models of grills that boast 6-in-1 ability, its no wonder they are so popular.

    Disadvantages Of Traeger Pellet Grills

    What type of fuel does a Traeger grill use?

    Grilling test on a Traeger Wood Pellet Grill at Yale Appliance in Framingham

    Pellet grills are not grills in the classic sense.

    A Traegers’ max temperature is only 500 degrees, so it’s more of a wood-fired outside stove with Wi-Fi control.

    So, you need to consider two main problems before buying a Traeger or any conventional pellet grill.

    You will not be able to cook fast. Your Weber, Lynx, DCS, or any other type of gas or charcoal grill heats to 900 degrees.

    So you cannot quickly cook a couple of burgers and dogs before a game. It’s like cooking in an electric wall oven.

    You also do not have that grilled or “char” composition like a charcoal or gas grill.

    Lastly, the construction of the cover is thin and loses a ton of heat when opened. With that loss in heat, it will take even more time to cook.

    Do Traeger Pellet Grills Use Propane Or Gas

    Traegers manufacture pellet grills that turn ordinary food into heavenly smoked goodness.

    Simply put some food on the smoker, close the lid, and wait a few hours before enjoying fall off the bone smoked meat.

    But this made me wonder, how do Traeger pellet grills work? Do Traegers use propane or gas?

    Traeger pellet grills do not use propane or gas. Instead, pellet grills use wood pellets and electricity to create heat and smoke in order to cook and smoke food. Traeger pellet grills are powered with electricity so that the auger can feed pellets into the fire which is started by an electric hot rod.

    Lets go over how a pellet grill works so we can understand why they do not use propane or gas.

    Do Traeger Grills Use Electricity

    The Traeger is a wood pellet grill. In it, pellets are drawn from a side-mounted hopper into a central burn chamber by an auger, then ignited by a hot metal rod. Those mechanisms run on electricity, so youve got to plug it in. It offers precise, digital temperature control integrated with meat thermometers.

    To start using the grill, pour wood pellets into a hopper . Press the start button to ignite the pellets, which are fed into the fire box with an auger, where a controlled number of pellets are lit and burned . The auger adjusts the number of pellets entering the fire box to maintain the desired temperature.

    The system circulates air through the fire box and into the grill area, allowing for evenly distributed heat. This precise control gives the wood pellet grill the ability to closely control temperature, performing like a wood-fired oven.
