Spirit E-315 3-burner Liquid Propane Gas Grill In Black

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

Weber Spirit E-315 Overview | Barbecues Galore

We wish the bars of the Spirit II E-310s warming racks ran front to back, parallel to the main grates, like they do on our upgrade pick, the Genesis E-325s. That way, you could easily slide a spatula under stuff thats warming. As it is, the warming-rack bars run edge to edge, and you have to awkwardly jimmy a spatula in there sideways.

The Spirit II E-310 should come with a grill cover. This one doesnt, nor did any grill in our test group, so youll need to buy one separately. Webers dedicated Spirit II cover costs about $80, and a well-regarded generic cover costs about $30 .

Features To Look Out For In A Gas Grill

As you go about shopping for your new grill, there are certain features that you will need to ensure are on the grill, regardless of whether you will be buying the grill online or from a shop. Having this information on hand will help you avoid buyers remorse. Lets take a look at some of those important features.

Why You Should Trust Us

When we first started working on this guide, back in 2017, we spoke with more than a dozen experts before opening the valve on a single propane tank.

Among those experts, Joe Salvaggio ofBig Apple BBQ spent two hours explaining the fundamentals of gas grill design, function, materials, and maintenance. Joe and his brother Tony have run Big Apple BBQ, one of the New York regions leading grill shops, for over 30 years. Because Salvaggio is an independent retailer who carries grills from many manufacturers, he was able to speak freely about what he saw as the relative strengths and weaknesses of various designs.

At the 2017 Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Expo, we interviewed senior product managers from almost every major grill-maker in attendance, including several brands that wound up being featured in our test: Weber, Broil King, and Napoleon. We also spoke with multiple makers of high-end grills. Though we wouldnt be testing their grills, we found that understanding what goes into making a $4,000 grill helped us evaluate the less expensive grills in our test.

We backed this reporting with comprehensive researchthe in-depth, professional reviews at AmazingRibs.com being a standout sourceand with hands-on time with grills at the big hardware chains.

How We Picked The Best Gas Grill

There were three firm criteria that our main contenders had to meet:

Finally, we restricted our search to grills that burn propane from refillable tanks, the most common fuel by far. But you should note that there are versions of all of our picks that work with natural gas. Just keep in mind that if you dont already have the proper hookups, installing a natural-gas outlet isnt cheap or simple.

We didnt fret much over two other factors that grill-makers spend a lot of time talking about: the grates material and total Btu count .

First, the total Btu count on three-burner grills tends to vary between 30,000 and 40,000, and the industry is making a strong push toward more is better. But our research and reporting convinced us that the following was at least as important as the total output: whether those Btu were applied efficiently, steadily, and evenly across the grates.

Second, grates come in a range of materials: plain cast iron, porcelain-coated cast iron , and stainless steel rods . Salvaggio says porcelainized cast iron holds and delivers heat better than the even-heavier stainless rods on his top-end wares. We found that while porcelainized cast iron was predominant on grills ranging from $300 to over $1,000 in the past, stainless steel is gaining popularity. For instance, on its new Genesis models, Weber swapped the cast-iron grates for stainless steel ones.

    Weber Spirit 310 Vs 315

If you are looking for a simple three burner gas grill with no extra frills then the Weber Spirit line is a natural place to look. Weber currently has four grills that fit this description but figuring out the differences between them can be confusing.

I have been cooking on Weber grills for about 20 years now and currently own the Q3200, Traveler, Genesis 335 and a Weber Smokey Mountain. I suspect the only people who have kicked the tires on the different models of Weber grills more than me are the engineers that actually design these things.

This article will walk you through the Weber Spirit 310 vs 315 differences so you can figure out which grill is right for you.

The four grills we will be looking at include:

    • Weber Spirit E 310
    • Weber Spirit II E 310
    • Weber Spirit E 315
    • Weber Spirit S 315

Let me walk you through the features, pros/cons and customer reviews of these models and show you why the grill you want to buy is the Spirit II E 310.

    Full Review Weber Spirit S

Spirit is the budget line of gas grills from Weber. The Weber Spirit S-315 Gas Grill, which runs around $600USD doesnt sound budget. But then you pay for the Weber name and reputation. The truth is, that this grill gives you three burners and nothing else. It is a basic model without any extras. The standard configuration has three burners, producing up to 32,000 BTUs under 424 square inches of cooking surface. Not an impressive number. The porcelain-coated cooking grates are heavy enough to put grill marks on a steak, but this isnt a high-performance unit.

Now, this isnt a bad grill. For a three-burner grill, it has a small footprint and with the fold-down side tables, is perfect for small spaces. It has good potential for indirect grilling and can do most grilling tasks well. The stainless steel design isnt going to win any awards, but it is still relatively attractive. This is a nice gauge for checking how much propane you still have and a nice space to hide such a tank.

One last thing, while this grill looks shiny, the stainless steel it is made of isnt the best of quality. It takes more effort to keep this grill looking good than it does a basic black grill.

Backyard Bbq With Weber Gas Grills

Turn out incredible meals on a large Weber natural gas grill or propane grill at your next backyard BBQ and have space on the grill for mouthwatering ribs, tender chicken, succulent sausages and a whole lot more.

Pay special attention to these features when shopping for a performance-minded Weber gas grill for backyard BBQs:

    • Number of Burners:More burners equal more control over your heat. Models with three, four or six burners provide multiple heat zones, so you can have thick chops, thinly-sliced meats and an assortment of veggies going at the same time. Back burners provide even more heating options for cooking and keeping food warm.
    • Cooking Area: The number of burners can also indicate the available cooking area. Although it depends on the grill model, two burner and three burner grills can easily serve a household, while grills with four or six burners are best for frequent grilling and large BBQ get-togethers.
    • BTU Output: BTU rating indicates how much fuel a grill burns. Weber gas grills are designed for quality, performance and efficiency, meaning they will burn the right amount of fuel for consistent grilling results.
    • Side Burners:Cook or heat side dishes while you attend to the grill with a Weber model that features one or two side burners.

    Propane Or Natural Gas

Propane grills use a propane gas tank for the production of flames. The gas is usually housed in a tank and connected using a short pipeline. They are common in most households because refilling them is affordable and also readily available at most outlets and gas stations.

Natural gas, on the other hand, does not need you to have an external tank. They, however, do need a professional to install them. This is because natural gas grills are usually connected to the gas in your home, leading to the grill. While the initial setup may seem tedious, they are easy to use.

In comparison, propane has twice the amount of energy as natural gas. Also, natural gas grills tend to be pricier than propane gas grills. The other difference is that propane uses a shorter hose than what is required to connect natural gas.

What About Napoleon And Broil King

    Weber Spirit E

Both of these companies make well-designed grills with cast-aluminum fireboxes and enameled steel frames. Theyre not picks, however, because we found that Weber grills struck the best balance of searing power and usability of the three brands. Here are our observations on both the Napoleon and Broil King models we tested in 2017:

The Napoleon Rogue 425 is the Canadian companys flagship in the $400 to $900 range. Like the other models we tested in that category, this one has a cast-aluminum firebox, porcelain-coated cast-iron grates, and three burners. On paper, the Rogue 425 has a lot going for it, but we were disappointed in its performance. Despite showing 650 °F heat on our burger test, it failed to achieve a good sear. We suspect this is due to a combination of a couple things: the pyramidal grate bars making minimal contact with the meat, and the grills thermometer overstating the actual temperature by about 50 degrees . The grill also struggled to hold a steady temperature on the barbecue-chicken test. Napoleons signature is its wavy grates, and they do look cool, but theyre harder to clean than straight grates. They also leave odd, distorted sear marks if you try to make the classic crosshatch pattern. Assembly was straightforward, and the instruction manual was well-thought-out. But given the Weber Spirit II E-310s higher performance and lower cost, the choice was clear.

Weber Spirit Vs Genesis Whats The Big Difference

The Spirit and Genesis are the two most popular gas grill lines that Weber

The Spirit II line is Weber s entry-level range of gas grills designed for people who prioritize value for money over extra features.

The Genesis is made for grilling enthusiasts willing to pay more for higher quality and extra functionality.

The Genesis lineup has been updated in Spring of 2022 with what Weber

Well get into whats new and see if that claim stacks up in a little bit or you can head over to our full review of the new Weber Genesis.

The new models are just called Genesis, while the previous generation that was updated in 2019 goes by Genesis II. Weber could have made things easy for us and gone with the obvious Genesis III, but that would have been too logical.

So dont be confused if you see a new Genesis and think that the Genesis II is better.

To keep things confusing, the most up-to-date Spirit lineup still goes by Spirit II!

At the time of writing, you can still buy the older Genesis models at a discount, so if you arent impressed with the new features, its a good chance to get a great grill at a discounted price.

Key differences between Spirit and Genesis grills:

The Genesis and Spirit share the same 10-year warranty on the burner tubes, cooking grates, and flavorizer bars, while the Genesis offers 12 years on the cook box and lid.

Note that this does not cover normal wear and tear, which might be obtained with regular use.

What About Propane Vs Natural Gas

All of our picks are propane-gas grills, since propane tanks are portable and can be purchased almost anywhere, and they dont require any special hookups in your backyard.

However, our picks are also sold in natural-gas versions, which are gaining in popularity. But they require that you have a natural-gas hookup on your deck or patio. If you have natural gas in your home but dont have an outdoor connection, youll need to hire a technician to install one, and this may involve cutting into walls. And if you want to easily move your natural-gas grill into and out of storage, youll also need to buy a quick-disconnect system, which can add another $150 or so. The benefits of natural gas include not having to wrestle propane tanks on and off your grill, always-available fuel , and lower fuel costs . This post provides a deeper rundown of the process.

Of course, you may also have concerns about how each of these fuel choices might impact the environment. Theres no easy answer, but we discuss some of the considerations in the sustainability section below.

The Weber Spirit II E-310 provides the unrivaled combination of top-notch grilling performance, a versatile three-burner design, durability, and a relatively affordable price. It excelled at every test, producing the best sear on our burgers of any grill, and equaling or outdoing the others in our tests involving barbecue chicken and whole roasted chickens. The Spirit II E-310s overall compact size suits almost any patio or deck. And yet its grilling surface is big enough to cook a complete meal for a family or a dozen burgers for a party. With a thick cast-aluminum firebox, this model will last for years. For decades, the company has refined the Spirits design, too. This version includes an easily accessible externally mounted propane tank and an under-grill shelf. On top of all that, this grill is particularly easy to assemble, maintain, and use, and its finish comes in four colors .

With 424 square inches of primary grilling space, the three-burner Spirit II E-310 can easily accommodate 12 large hamburgers, two whole or cut-up chickens, or a large cut for smoking, like brisket. Or it can cook a complete meal for five or six people. For instance, you can sear steak or fish on one side of the grill and cook vegetables on lower heat on the other. And you can cook them really well.

The Spirit II E-310 exhibited the most consistent heat across the entire cooking surface.
