Can I Hook In My Own Natural Gas Grill
You definitely can hook up your own natural gas grill if you have all the right tools for it. If you dont have prior knowledge of plumbing or you are not familiar with the tools, we recommend hiring a professional to do the job.
As its natural gas, a small accident can be very detrimental and no one should take a risk.
A plumbing or heating contractor can easily install your gas grill. Its always better to go natural as it saves a lot of money and energy in the long run.
You wont have to refill those bulky propane tanks. As you wont have to move around the tank at all, its safer too.
A Separate Propane Grill Tank Is Safer
The grill tank in your backyard contains an automatic shut-off valve for safety. When you connect your grill directly to your home supply, you lose this safety feature. You have to remember to turn off the gas every time.
If you forget, too much gas can up in your grill. This could lead to a dangerous combustion the next time someone turns on the grills ignition knob.
How Much Does It Cost To Set Up A Natural Gas Grill
Hooking up a natural gas grill is a task for a professional. Usually, it takes somewhere between $200-$400 depending on nowhere you live. They do all the things necessary from running the gas line to hooking it up with your gas grill.
There are also high-end and low-end installations. Its ideal to contact the people who do these tasks and negotiate a price depending on your needs.

Checking For Leaks Using The Soapy Water Test
On their own, propane and natural gas dont have a distinctive odor. Most providers then add other components to the gas to give it a rotten egg smell, which helps you know that there is a leak. However, this doesnt necessarily tell you where a potential leak is in the gas line or fittings. One easy way to find a gas leak is to use the Soapy Water Test.
Step 1: Mix some common dish detergent with water in a spray bottle.Step 2: Vigorously spray down the gas lines and fittings.Step 3: Open the main valve on the gas line or propane tank. Dont turn on the gas grill.
The pressure that builds up in the line will then push against the film of soapy water, which will create small bubbles. If there is a problem, youll need to fix it before firing up the grill. When you are done, you simply fill the spray bottle with clean water, spray everything down vigorously, and let it drip dry.

How Can I Prepare This Natural Gas Line So I Can Connect A Grill
When we moved into our new house the builder mentioned there was a gas line coming out of the house. I’d like to use this to connect a grill. However, looking at the gas pipe I don’t see any kind of valve to shut off the gas .Would I be able to just pop off the cap and connect the grill, or am I missing any other parts?
- Not that I can tell… DandanFeb 17 ’14 at 20:01
- Not sure what code says, but if it were me I’d have a valve inside and outside. The valve inside would allow me to control the gas, so I’d turn it on when using the grill, and off when not. The valve outside would be used in case of emergency, for quick gas shut off. Having a gas line that anybody could turn on/off, seems a bit dangerous to me. Tester101Feb 18 ’14 at 11:38
- For grills in my area I don’t think I have ever seen inside shut-offs. Also most of the time the gas lines for gas lights or grills never enter the house.
You would first turn off the gas at the meter. Then, if this pipe extending from the wall is indeed a gas line, you would take off the cap, clean the threads well, install suitable thread sealer made specifically for gas lines and install an appropriate gas shutoff valve. Install the grill gas connection down flow from this new valve using adapter fittings if necessary.
Then in case you ever need to disconnect the grill for winter, cleaning, replacement, moving or whatever else you can shut off this added valve without having to turn off all the gas in the house.
How Do I Connect A Natural Gas Grill To My House
To connect a natural gas grill to your house, you need to hire a professional. Working with gas lines is dangerous, so do not attempt this without a professional present. A plumbing or heating contractor or a licensed gas fitter are your best options to install your natural gas grill.
If you have some experience and plan to pursue the gas grill installation yourself, be sure to have it inspected by a professional before use.
There are two main ways to power your grill: propane or natural gas. Natural gas has several advantages when compared to propane.
- Cost-effective natural gas is often less expensive than propane, which will save you money over time.
- Safe Unlike propane, which is denser than air, natural gas is lighter than air. It rises, which prevents any dangerous buildup of gas from occurring.
- Convenient No need to buy bulky propane tanks and hook them up to your gas grill. Also, you wont have to refill natural gas like you do with propane, which makes it a reliable option.
- Portable As long as you have the right cord to connect your grill to the home gas line, you can install your gas grill anywhere in the yard.
If you are looking to invest in a natural gas grill, then check out this article for our detailed step-by-step breakdown of the installation process. Refer to the video below to help with the installation.

Did You Match The Gas Type In Your Home With That Of Your Grill
First and foremost, you’re going to want to determine what you will be using as a fuel source. There are two types of gas that you can use to fuel your gas grill: liquid propane or natural gas.
Natural gas is delivered to your home via a pipeline operated by your local gas company. LP is typically stored in 20-lb. portable propane cylinder tanks that you refill at a local hardware store or gas station. In rare instances, you might have a large tank on your property that stores LP gas in bulk.
Natural gas is extracted from the underground. It contains methane, as well as a mixture of propane, butane, and ethane.Liquid Propane is a by-product of both natural gas and crude oil. LP gas is more efficient than natural gas.
When you’re purchasing a gas grill, make sure to choose a type of model that corresponds with the specific type of gas you are using. The consistency and chemical makeup of these gas types are vastly different. Therefore, your gas grill will come optimally tuned for the specific gas type.
If you’re using natural gas, you should prioritize:
Alternatively, if you’re opting for a grill that uses a liquid propane cyclinder, here are some key points to consider:
Unfortunately, it may not be possible to convert your gas grill from LP to natural gas.

How To Install A Gas Line Or Tank To A Propane Grill
The term Gas Grill technically covers a spectrum of natural gas and propane grills. Some propane grills can be connected to a one-pound DOT-39 propane cylinder or a larger propane tank. These grills are especially handy as they are portable and can be taken on camping trips or to a tailgate party.
There are also some propane grills that can be hooked up to a municipal gas line. The trade-off in a lack of portability is affordability, as many homes with a dedicated propane line get their gas at a lower rate than the same propane in a portable tank.
Natural gas grills differ from propane grills in a few ways. First of all, natural gas has less energy density than propane. This means that its not really available to consumers in a portable tank. It needs to have a municipal line plumbed to the spot where the grill will live. Many come with their own 10-foot long gas hose to give you a little wiggle room.
The advantage of natural gas is that it costs less for the same thermal output. Its also clean-burning, especially at low temperatures, which means you taste the food and not the lingering odor of the gas like sometimes happens when propane doesnt oxidize completely.
Of course, with all these components and connections, you need to make sure everything is connected properly. We are still talking about energetic, flammable hydrocarbons. Most importantly, we strongly suggest you get someone to help who is mechanically inclined if you have any doubts.
If Unsure Please Speak To An Expert
If youre not confident of the laws surrounding the fitting of an NG grill or arent confident of following the process yourself, please stop here and consult a professional.
Its illegal to run flexible hosing for NG in some areas, so you will need to fit a fixed permanent supply. You must check on this before beginning.
And of course, if you improperly fit the natural gas supply, it could leak and be a fire hazard, so you need at least some competence with hand tools.
With that out the way, lets get to the meat of the article.
But before we detail our step-by-step guide to help you complete your mission, we feel you should familiarize yourself with the process via video. Here are two of the most popular grill brands being converted on film.
