Using Heat To Remove Burnt

Stainless Steel Grill Cleaning | Weber Grills

To do this, place the grates inside the grill, close the lid and crank it up to the highest temperature. Wait for around 10-15 minutes and turn the grill off. Thanks to the high heat, the grease will loosen and become brittle. Follow up by using a quality grill brush to remove the leftover residue from the grates. Finish things off with a good hose down in case theres any remaining debris.

If you decide to use a grill brush when cleaning your stainless steel grill, choose one with a solid head. Always check if the bristles are still intact after each use!

Technique # 2 Soaking

Soaking your grates is an easy way to loosen the burnt carbon and grease. You will need a container large enough to house the grates within a water solution for this.

Here is a safe and easy soaking solution

  • Use a plastic tub large enough to hold your grates.
  • Pour in ½ cup of strong liquid dish detergent, fill the tub with enough hot water to cover the grates with at least two to three inches of water.
  • Stir in ¼ cup of baking soda until dissolved and the water is foamy.
  • Drop in the grates and soak for 1 to 2 hours. You can leave them overnight if you have the time.
  • Scrub with a heavy-duty synthetic scrub pad. Avoid steel scrub pads as pieces can break off and find their way into your food.
  • Rinse the grills with a hose, and youre ready to start grilling
  • If you dont want to buy a plastic tub, you can get by using a heavy-duty lawn trash bag. Just be sure there are no leaks. The black water will stain almost everything it touches.

Another alternative to soapy water is vinegar and baking soda.

  • Put the grates in a tub or plastic bag
  • Mix 2 cups white vinegar to 1 cup of baking soda and pour the mixture directly over them. The mixture will foam instantly so work fast.
  • Just soak for between an hour to overnight
  • Scrub and rinse as above.

How To Clean Stainless Steel Grill Grates The Right Way

Now that you know what not to do with your stainless steel grill grate, lets dive into how to clean a stainless steel grate the right way. When it comes to keeping your grates and grill rack clean, there are two things you need to keep in mind.

    • The easiest way to clean your grids is while theyre still hot, right after youre through with barbecuing. Besides, it gives you something to do while you let the meat rest. Dont put it off till later.
    • If that sounds too ambitious especially when youre trying to fight off hunger pangs and would rather clean your grates at a later time , ensure that you preheat your grill first. 500°F for 15 minutes should do it. Then, use a scrubber or scraper to brush away any remnants from your previous barbecuing session.

With that in mind, you can use any of the two techniques below to clean your stainless steel grates.

Scrub Your Grill Grates And Then Scrub Some More

Grab your grill brush and start scrubbing. Continue with the brush to remove any accumulated debris that has built-up over time.

Remove Remaining Charred and Baked on Foods

Maintenance is the key. Regular use of a grill brush on the grates will keep the grill clean.

Want less scrubbing and cleaning? An alternative method to deep cleaning is to cover the rack with foil before cooking and make slits with a spatula or other grill tool, then remove the foil when finished grilling.

How To Get Your Stainless Grill Grates Looking Like New

To get those grids looking brand new well, you cant. Once used, your cooking grids will begin developing what is called a patina. Its a combination of discoloration from heat, and a buildup of oils on your barbecue cooking grates that will protect the stainless steel from corrosion and create a non-stick surface for you to cook on. That isnt to say that you cant have some nice looking grids. As outlined in the video, if you use a great, high-temperature oil like Crisco, palm oil, or lard to season your grids every few uses, and keep those grills clean, the grids will remain in great condition.

As always, we recommend that you exercise caution when using a grill brush and remember to perform proper grill brush maintenance to ensure that you arent losing bristles.

Do You Need To Season Stainless Steel Grill Grates

How to Clean a Stainless Steel Grill

Unlike cast iron, you dont have to season your stainless steel grill grates often. As long as you keep moisture out of your grill, your stainless steel grates will be fine.

You can do so by always keeping a cover on your grill when not in use, especially if you live in a humid place. Also make sure to dry the grates completely before putting them back to the grill. Last but not least, remember not to use any abrasive or harsh cleaners such as steel wool or bleach to clean them.

Other than that, the one thing to keep in mind that you should oil your food but not your grates before cooking. There are two reasons for that.

    Firstly, the oil wont stay on the surface of the grates, it will fall down to the fire below. Secondly, even if the oil stays on the surface, the heat from cooking will eventually burn it all off.;

Oiling your food will prevent them from sticking to the grates and make them easier for you to clean and care for later on.

    • Once the grill is cooled, use a grill brush with nylon bristles to clean off the remaining particles.
    • If the grates have been neglected or require a deep cleaning, take them to soak in the kitchen sink.
    • Sprinkle baking soda all over the stainless steel grate. Next, use a spray bottle to spray white vinegar over the baking soda. After the mixture foams, gently scrub with a wire brush or steel wool.
    • Once clean, rinse the grate well with water and allow it to dry completely before returning them to your grill.

S Of Cleaning Stainless Steel Grills

Keeping your stainless steel barbecue grills in good shape requires cleaning them soon after each use. Letting the burnt on food debris sit on the grill will only make cleaning more difficult and possibly cause dulling of the grill finish. Using a wire brush or steel wool may cause pits and scratches that will later fill up with burnt on debris and make the grill more difficult to clean. Never use an abrasive cleaner when cleaning stainless steel grills. As your grill gets used more often you will find that your stainless steel grates become discolored. While they may never regain their shiny appearance, you can prevent pits, scrapes and rust from corroding them if you maintain them properly.
