Converting A Weber Ots To Otg

Converting a OTS to a OTG and Ash Catcher History.

Or Upgrading old performer / one-touch gold ash bucket to new style.

The Weber Kettle has had an ash catcher dish for more than 60 years. Weber was the first company to popularize the adjustable vents under the charcoal for temp control and an ash catcher prevented the ash and embers from falling on the ground. Weber first invented the One touch system in 1982 and filed for patent #CA 413907 on Oct 21, 1982. The One-touch has 3 elongated vent slots in the kettle base that served the dual purpose of airflow and ash removal. The actual vent scraped the bottom of the bowl while also being able to adjust the vent opening. The One-Touch ash sweeper and vent was moved with a handle outside the kettle.

MasterTouch with the top-of-the-line One-Touch ash catcher

Weber sold the One Touch as a premium model to the three daisy wheel kettle. On Aug 8, 1991 Weber filed patent application #EP19910916230 for an updated ash catcher with an ash catcher collar and removable pot-like ash pan. This style was placed on the higher end models like the like the Performer, and One-Touch Gold while the original ashpan dish remained for the One-touch Silver.

The OTG ash catcher has a few major advantages:

How Can I Easily Remove Ashes From A Weber Kettle Grill

A couple of my readers inquired about How to remove ashes from a charcoal grill from the ashpan that is just below the Weber One-Touch Silver. Well, this may seem like a rather obvious question but, to be honest, after I bought my Weber One Touch, I was wondering the exact same thing. At first glance, the ash pan of the Weber One Touch appears to be in a stationary location and not easily removed to dispose of the ashes. Well, there certainly is a solution!

Heres a quick video of me removing the ash pan from my Weber 22 1/2 Kettle Grill which has the same mechanism as the 18 One Touch Silver. You can also check out the images below this video of me removing the ash pan from my Weber 18 1/2 Weber Kettle Grill.

I put together a series of step by step images with descriptions that shows exactly how to remove the ash pan in order to safely dispose of the ashes. BTW, if you buy the standard version of the Weber 22 1/2 Kettle Grill, the ash pan is removed the same way. We welcome any type of questions from our readers when it comes to anything associated with grilling and barbecue. And please remember, there are no dumb questions!

    An Overview On Charcoal Grill

    Weber Charcoal Ash Catcher

Propane gas may have become popular for its convenience, but true grill masters will tell you that nothing beats the taste you get from cooking on a charcoal grill. With charcoal, youll get a smokier taste similar to what youd find by cooking with wood chips.

Theres a reason for this smoky taste. As your food cooks on a charcoal grill, meat drippings drop onto the flame, creating smoke. As part of this smoke vapor reaches your food, some of it infuses with the meat, giving you that much-desired traditional barbecue taste.

Its important to note, though, that gas grills have their benefits, as well. As those drippings drop down, the moisture lands on the ceramic or metal slabs that protect the meat from the flame. The result is moister meat.

If youre buying a charcoal grill, you need to know right away they can be a little messier than gas. The good news is, todays charcoal grills are built to make up for that. Youll often get easily removable trays that collect ash, letting you easily discard it after youre finished cooking.

Lastly, theres the issue of temperature control. Youll need to be able to easily adjust the heat settings, but its equally important that your grill evenly distributes heat across the grill top surface. Otherwise, youll find youre shifting items around to ensure everything is evenly cooked, which could delay mealtime.

The best thing about this can is the locking lid which is great if the ashes are still hot. A suggestion I would make before you lock the lid is to pick up a spray bottle and spray the ashes with some water just to give them a quick cool off.
