How Do You Use A Charcoal Grill

Cooking on a charcoal grill is a bit more complicated than using a gas-powered model. First, you’ll need to measure out an appropriate amount of charcoal briquettesthis will depend on the size of your grill, what you’re cooking, and how hot you want the grill to get. Next, you have to light the charcoal using a chimney starter or other tool.

From here, you’ll want to clean and oil your cooking grates and preheat them for several minutes before placing food on the grill. As you cook your food, control the grill’s temperature by using the upper and lower vents. For the hottest fire possible, you’ll want to open both vents all the way, or for a lower temperature, close the upper vent to a half or quarter.

How To Clean Your Grill

In order to thoroughly clean your grill, you will need to have a variety of cleaning utensils on hand. Among these utensils should be a stiff wire brush, dish soap, sponges, paper towels, a soft scrubbing brush, and a water hose. Certain parts of the grill may have to be removed in order to be properly cleaned, so it is important to read the instruction manual in case there are special cleaning instructions.

You will need to scrub the grates thoroughly with a wire brush and dispose of any ash that has formed from the charcoal section of the grill. For the gas section, any gas valve needs to be disconnected before starting the cleaning process.

With your cleaning utensils, thoroughly clean every part of your grill until every trace of residue has been eliminated. A clean grill will make way for a better grilling experience and exceptionally flavorful food.

Best barrel charcoal grill

Reasons to avoid

If you want to do more than sling hot dogs and burgers on your charcoal grill, the Royal Gourmet is ideal. It has a crank that lets you raise and lower the charcoal pan to help control the heat. When you want to quickly grill brats, move the coals right below them. To slowly smoke a side of salmon without flare-ups, lower them.

Theres even a door underneath the grates that makes it easy to keep adding charcoal as the hungry crowd thickens. Plus youll find you need a lot of charcoal to keep the Royal Gourmet burning, so make sure you stock up before the party starts.

Unlike on a kettle-style grill, this model has side tables to hold your tongs and trays and platters. Youll also find a thermometer in the lid to give you a rough idea as to how hot it is under the grill, a warming rack thats helpful for heating buns, and an easy to remove ash tray. Below the grill theres a bottom shelf to keep extra charcoal or a roll of paper towels.

Is Bigger Better Choosing The Right Grill Size

When it comes to the size of their grill, many cooks and backyard chefs think that bigger is always better. But when selecting your grill you should keep in mind the factors that matter most, because going big is a tradeoff in other areas that you might not initially consider.

There are two significant disadvantages to choosing a larger grill. First of all, large grills take a longer time to heat up. Its simple sciencea larger space requires more heat and energy before it reaches a certain temperature. Just imagine trying to heat a gymnasium with a space heater. as opposed to a small bedroom. This means budgeting for longer prep times when cooking for eager mouths.

The other disadvantage of larger grills is that the use more gas. While gas grills have become more efficient, its a fact that those with larger burners and more burners to fuel will use up gas much quicker than smaller models.

Keep all of this in mind when selecting your gas grill. How much grill space do you really need? Do you entertain larger groups often, or are you generally cooking for you and your small family? Are you big eaters or do you like to enjoy smaller portions? All this will help determine whether you should opt for a smaller grill or go big. Its a personal choice, and there are inherent benefits and drawbacks on both ends of the size spectrum.

Make sure you buy a BBQ with enough space to cater for everyone. Smaller kettle BBQs are good for gatherings of a few people or a family of four. Heston’s take on the Big Green Egg barbecue

Food sorcerer Heston Blumenthal swaggers into the arena of Japanese kamado-style charcoal grills , giving Big Green Egg a very good run for its readies. The Everdure 4K certainly has enough innovative touches to achieve it. The 4K comes with a relatively small 18-inch grill grate and features Fast Flame ignition using an electric hob type ring, so you will need to find a nearby electricity outlet to use it. Once fired up, the lids oven-type seal keeps the heat in for up to eight hours at time if slow cooking or smoking and on just one kilogram of charcoal. Other fine design flourishes include numbered aluminium air flow valves, an interior light, a handy front drawer to store the four meat probes it comes with and a clever charcoal top-up portal on the side. The LED displays a nice addition, too, though it is very difficult to read in bright sunlight.

On a positive parting note, it does at least come with a tidy package of goodies pizza stone, charcoal tongs, roasting rack, those four temperature probes and an all-important cover. Oh, and you’ll be pleased to hear it doesnt require much assembly.

Tepro Toronto Steak Grill

Fancy a big fat juicy sirloin with a crisp, black, caramelised outer like they do at your favourite steakhouse? Step this way.

The Toronto is essentially a super hot gas grill that uses a rectangular 3kW ceramic infrared burner to sear steaks at up to 800C in about 45 seconds per side. Simply attach it to some Patio gas it comes with a hose and regulator and fire it up using the battery-powered flame igniter. It comes with two small cooking grates , a grate handle and two grease trays. The inner walls are comprised of a series of rails set at different heights so you could feasibly place some sausages or chicken wings on a lower rung, turn the flame down and grill them at a more modest temperature.

We tried the Toronto using both fillet and sirloin steak. The fillet was a perfect medium rare after just 90 seconds though some parts of its surface failed to blacken as we expected and we think this might have been due to its dearth of fat. By contrast, the fatty sirloin positively sizzled, turning the flame into an orange fireball and crisping the outside to black perfection. Both steaks were very succulent among the juiciest weve ever made at home. And all without stinking the kitchen out and setting off the fire alarm. That said, they didnt look as smooth, shiny and appetising on the outside as if wed fried them on a high heat in a pan.

All Hands On Deck: Char

The Best BBQ Grills for 2021 – Ratings / Reviews / Prices

Char-Broils Kamander Charcoal Grill, despite the name, is actually a kamado . In keeping with Char-Broils aim of removing consumer pain points, the Kamander has a list price of just $349.99far less than a basic Big Green Egg with a stand, which runs about $1,000. That makes it one of the lowest-cost kamados on the market, potentially lifting the biggest barrier many consumers have to buying one of these cookers. The Kamander is heavier and sturdier than the cheaper Akorn and features a unique airflow design, with the air intake vent at cooking-grate level rather than on the bottom of the cooker . The large removable ash pan makes dumping ashes easy, and the ring of air intake holes around it aids in uniform air circulation.

Of course, a few corners have been cut to achieve the Kamanders wallet-friendliness, but it delivers a solid kamado cooking experience at a price point way below that of most other brands.
