Also, Genesis grills have a stainless steel lid handle and trim on the hood, whereas Spirit lid handles and trim are made of a high quality plastic.
All of these upgrades and extras put Weber Genesis grills in the $779 to $1,299 range which is definitely more expensive than other grill brands on the market.

There also isnt a large peer group for the Genesis series in terms of quality and price Napoleon grills come to mind, but they are probably targeting a more luxury market and are a little more expensive than comparable Weber grills across the board. Why Are Weber Grills So Expensive
Weber grills grew out of Weber Bros. Metal Works, a family business started in 1893. In 1952, co-owner George Stephen Sr. had been cooking with a brazier at home, and used some old sheet metal to build the first Weber grill and bring it to market.
Until then, outdoor cooking was typically done over an open flame or in a brick oven, and this kettle was the first grill of its kind, designed for improved performance and consistency when cooking outdoors. The product became so popular that Stephen soon led the newly formed Weber Barbecue division.
In the late 50s, Stephen bought out the Weber Bros. factory, renamed the company Weber-Stephen Products, and devoted the new business to barbecues and grills, developing new materials, new techniques, and new ways to cook outdoors.
Weber remained a family firm until 2010, when BDT Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in the company.

How We Picked The Best Gas Grill
We had three firm criteria that our main contenders had to meet:
Finally, we restricted our search to grills that burn propane from refillable tanks, the most common fuel by far, but you should note that most grills can also run on natural gasthough converting to natural gas isnt cheap or simple.1
We didnt fret much over two other factors that grill-makers spend a lot of time talking about: total Btu count and the grates material. First, the total Btu count on three-burner grills tends to vary between 30,000 and 40,000, and the industry is making a strong push toward more is better. But our research and reporting convinced us that at least as important as the total output was whether those Btus were applied efficiently, steadily, and evenly across the grates. We decided to reserve judgment until our tests.
We knew we would be looking at intangibles, too, such as how well the grills were packed, if the instructions were clear, and if assembly was reasonably straightforward. And, of course, we would consider the biggest intangible of all: the grills ability to perform in our tests.
But those judgments would have to wait until we got our hands on the contenders. So after weeks of research, reporting, and discussion, we settled on four gas grills to test in our main $400 to $700 category, and two grills around the $200 mark to test as budget options.
How Much Do Weber Grills Cost
The smart gas grills cost upwards of four figures . By comparison, a Genesis II grill without the smart function costs between $700 and $800.
The latest Kamado grill retails at just under $1,800. However if youre a charcoal fan, you can save a lot by doing low-tech and picking up an Original Kettle. Small ones start at $99 on the Weber US website. The Master-Touch series of charcoal grills are more expensive at around $229 to $269 .
For camping and trips out, the portable Smokey Joes cost just $59. These little grills have a 14 inch-wide cooking area and a neat carrying handle.
Not on a budget? That mighty Summit Grill Center is currently around $3,800 .

Comparison To Other Brands
Lets take another approach to this question of value.
People get sticker shock when they see a Weber grill next to to a cheap NexGrill other generic grill at Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart. They dont understand why the Weber costs twice as much.
Here is the thing though, you should not be comparing a High Quality grill against a Low Quality grill. It just doesnt make sense.
Instead, lets compare the cost of a Weber with other High Quality brands. In this example I want to compare the 22 inch Weber charcoal grill against similarly sized grills from two other High Quality brands, PK Grills and Napoleon. Prices are current as of April, 2021 but I have included links to the manufactures websites so you can check current prices if desired.
- PK Original Charcoal Grill: $369
Interesting.once you start comparing apples to apples the Weber grills look highly affordable.

Long Term Cost Of Ownership
Many people fall into the trap of buying a cheap grill, using it for 1-2 years and throwing it away after it rusts through. They develop the mindset that grills are only designed to last a year or two so why would you pay a lot of money for one?
What they dont realize is that Weber grills last an extremely long time.
I have a Weber charcoal grill on my deck that is over 10 years old and it still cooks like a champ. This grill is in great shape and I have every reason to believe it will last me another 10 years.
That charcoal grill cost about $180 when I bought it which means it has cost me less than $20 a year to have an amazing charcoal grill on my deck.
I also have an old Weber Q1200 on my deck that is over 10 years old. I cant remember exactly how much this grill cost when it was new but it was certainly less than $200.
Sure, you will have to buy some parts every few years. I replaced the igniter on the Q1200 once and replaced the cooking grate on my kettle twice.
Both of these grills are in good enough shape that I believe I could list either of them on Facebook/Craigslist for $100 and get them sold within a week.
The takeaway here is that when looking at the cost of a Weber grill you need to realize that it will probably last you at least a decade. Sure, it may hurt to make the initial purchase but after 2-3 years of grilling you are going to realize that you made a solid investment.

The Weber Flavorizer Bar
A feature present on most Weber grills is the Flavorizer bar. It sounds really fancy, and it certainly makes for a strong selling point, except many people hardly understand what purpose it serves. If it got you intrigued too, know that this bar is designed to improve both the overall flavor of the food and your safety.
This bar is placed under the grate and on top of the burners. It catches excess grease and oil, and by doing this, it keeps it from falling onto the burners and vaporizes some of it back onto your food, enriching its taste.
