A motor turns a screw-like device, an auger, to feed the burn pot. The pellets are then ignited and exhausted by the chimney.

Traeger also has air convection. A 4-inch convection fan feeds the burning pellets air allowing them to burn hot and efficiently while circulating the heated, smoke-filled air around the food.

The grill moves the heat around the meat, just like convection style cooking in an oven.

This air induction system allows the grill to be “sealed” underneath, which means you can use it when it’s windy to smoke, roast, bake, and grill.

The last thing to note is the grease management system. It has a slanted grease tray moving the grease out of the grill into a bucket.

It’s recommended to line the tray with tin foil for easy cleanup. This system also prevents flare-ups leading to burned and overcooked food.

What Is A Pellet Grill

A pellet grill is an electricity-powered smoker that lets you make slow-smoked barbecue at home with a lot less guesswork and babysitting than in more traditional methods. Instead of wood and charcoal, the grill uses pellets made from compressed sawdust for fuel. You set the grill to a specific temperature, and it automatically dispenses and ignites these pellets as needed to heat the cooking chamber over the long, slow smoking process.

Heres how it works: The pellets sit in a hopper attached to the side of the grill. When you start the grill and set the temperature, an auger dispenses pellets into the fire pot. The grill then ignites the pellets, and when it reaches the set temperature, it automatically maintains that heat throughout the cooking process. As long as your grill is reliable, you could load it with pellets before you go to bed and have a beautifully smoked brisket by morning, without having to wake up and tend coals every couple of hours.

Brands With Manufacturer Warranties

Reputable pellet grill brands will always offer a manufacturer warranty to ensure the pellet grill operates correctly. Generally, a pellet grills warranty will be anywhere from 2 to 4 years and cover any manufacturer defects.

If a pellet grill does not come with a warranty then that is a big red flag that the pellet grill will not last. Moreover, the pellet grill is likely manufactured with low-quality materials which is why the brand does not offer a warranty.

Pellet grills can cost anywhere from $400 to $1,000+ so making sure that the pellet grill has a warranty to fix any defects is critical. Once the pellet grill is up and running, most pellet grills require little maintenance to continue operating for years to come.

So make sure to purchase a pellet grill from a brand that offers a manufacturer warranty.

What Should I Do If My Traeger Runs Out Of Pellets While Using It

Of course, if you have some on hand, its easy to simply lift the lid and add more to the hopper.

Unfortunately, if you run completely out of pellets during cooking and lose your fire, you have to let the grill cool completely and restart the grill.;

Traeger grills use 1-3 pounds of pellets per hour. The hoppers hold between 18 pounds and 22 lbs depending on which model you get.

How fast you go through them, of course, depends on how high your heat is. Pellets are sold in 20-pound bags. Each bag provides between 6 and 20 hours of cook time. The lower the heat, the longer the cooking time youll need, and the more pellets youll use.

Some of the best foods are smoked over long periods of time. St. Louis ribs may cook for up to 8 hours. A beef brisket will cook for 12-15 hours.

So for a brisket , you can expect to use about 10-15 pounds of pellets over the course of cooking.

So you want to make sure you have enough wood pellets on hand before you start cooking.;

Running out of pellets means that the grill has to cool completely and will have to be restarted according to the Traegers Initial Firing Instructions. According to Traegers Owners Manual, this means removing baffle, drip tray, and grill plates. Youll want those to be cool before you remove them.

Having to wait until the grill and the components cool completely before firing it back up means that your brisket will have to sit there for several hours. This could permit the growth of harmful bacteria.

How Long Do Pellet Grills Last

How Long Do Traeger Pellets Last?

Pellet grills are becoming increasingly popular with home BBQ enthusiasts for their versatility and convenience. After all, what other cooking machine can smoke a brisket and then bake a pie?

Not to mention pellet grills just need electricity, wood pellets, and time to smoke or cook just about anything. The ease of use is a huge draw to pellet grills since they have made smoking easy since you can just set it and forget it and wait until the food is done.

Given the versatility and convenience of pellet grills, its no wonder that these grills can range from hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Since these grills are a larger investment compared to charcoal or gas grills, I often get asked about the life expectancy of pellet grills.

So how long do pellet grills typically last?

Generally, pellet grills will last anywhere from 5 to 10 years with regular use. Proper care and maintenance will extend the lifespan of the grill. However, cheaper pellet grills may only last 2 to 3 years due to the low-quality materials used to construct the grill. So investing in a higher quality pellet grill, proper maintenance, and storing the grill indoors or covered will extend the lifespan of a pellet grill.

Now lets cover the important factors to consider when looking for a pellet grill to ensure it will last a long time.

What If I Don’t Know Which Wood Pellets To Use

Weve spent years mastering the development of hardwood pellets. Weve spent years mastering the development of hardwood pellets that have just the right amount of moisture contentthe sweet spotto maintain a perfect burn-to-smoke ratio. Pellets with the wrong moisture ratio, create bitter-tasting white smoke, instead of pure, blue smoke, due to high carbon content. Other pellet mills bind their hardwood with additives. They source the wood from old flooring or cabinetry, making it a mystery to whats in it, or where it came from. Traeger only uses 100% virgin hardwood and our pellets do not contain any unnatural additives or fillers. All of the Traeger Pellet Mills are located right here in the USA which lets Traeger oversee the entire process to ensure the pellets meet our strong guidelines for smoke perfection.

We have a long list of wood pellet options to customize your cooks and discover new flavor combinations with – Hickory, Mesquite, Apple, Pecan, Oak, Cherry, Maple, and Alder. Additionally, we have crafted specialty pellet blends including Big Game, Turkey, and our Texas Beef. Alder is great for fish and a lighter smoke flavor for any meal. Mesquite is our most robust pellet flavor. Its great for game meats and pulled pork. Oak is an all-around flavor enhancer, boosting everything from beef, to chicken. Traeger Pro Series 34

Overview

Notice we did not say the least expensive Traeger, this is not. But it delivers some characteristics that make it a great contender. For over a decade the manufacturing has been in China, and frankly that is the way it is in the pellet smoker world until you get to the ultra-premium high end units. It seems that Traeger, and many others, have gotten a better build quality from their manufacturing partners recently, although there are consumers who disagree. Combine that with a lagging reputation for customer service, and it explains why the market has allowed so much competition.

Their build is certainly sturdy, coming in at 136 pounds, these contain a lot of metal. The rack space at 884 square inches over two levels is impressive. The other components get interesting results. Our experience, echoed by others, is that they are very fickle when it comes to holding temperature. This unit still uses a dial with 25 degree increments, and their own spec says it will hold to within +/-15 degrees. It also can take a significant amount of time to get to temperature, especially the listed top end of 450 degrees. It does offer two temperature probe inputs, so you could monitor the ambient temp of the chamber, although we have our recommendations for a Bluetooth set up to accomplish that and more .

Where Are Traeger Grills Made

According to Traeger, all residential grills have been manufactured in China since 2008.

Their larger commercial grills are still manufactured in the United States.

Some people have complained about Traeger moving to manufacture their grills in China but the simple fact is the vast majority of consumer grills are manufactured there.

If buying American made is important to you, then you might want to consider a Yoder pellet grill, although youll end up paying at least double the price.
