Camp Chef Smokepro Sg 24 Pellet Grill Review

By: Max Good

Camp Chefs SmokePro SG 24 Pellet Grill aspires to be both a smoker and high temperature grill. Though often referred to as pellet grills, cookers like this one are primarily smokers with limited grilling capability at best. If you are not familiar with pellet smokers, they are thermostatically controlled outdoor ovens that burn wood pellets and can be set to exact cooking temperatures just like an indoor kitchen oven. A typical design includes a thermostat under the hood that monitors cooking temperature and feeds wood pellets to a firepot as needed to maintain your set temperature. The firepot is usually covered by a metal heat diffuser. Another large metal drip plate is placed at an angle right under the cooking grates to even out heat and divert drippings to a grease bucket. Some pellet grill manufacturers attempt to create a hot, sear zone by exposing foods to the direct flame from burning wood pellets in the firepot. For this Camp Chef model, the SG is short for Slide and Grill, which describes the design.

Which Brand Is Better Camp Chef Or Traeger

When it comes to choosing a pellet grill, both Camp Chef and Traeger have great options. Both brands are popular and have loyal fans, but each one has different strengths and weaknesses.

Traeger sells a wide variety of models with precise temperature control.

However, if youre looking for something that is a bit more advanced with extra features like WiFIRE technology, then Traeger is the better brand. They also offer superior customer service and warranty coverage in case anything should go wrong with your grill.

Camp Chef is known for its large grills with lots of cooking space and extra features.

On the other hand, if youre looking for a more affordable grill that is still high-quality and made in the USA, then Camp Chef is definitely worth considering. They offer a wider range of sizes to suit your needs and budget, plus their grills are built to last for many years.

Other Options:

If youre looking for a different brand of pellet grill, there are plenty of great options available. For example, Green Mountain Grills offers a variety of quality grills that are built to last and feature digital temperature controls. Additionally, they offer free shipping on all orders in the continental US.

The best way to decide which brand of pellet grill is right for you is to do some research and read product reviews. This will help you compare the different brands and models available, so you can find the one that best meets your needs and budget.

Will Slide And Grill Technology Be Possible To Retrofit An Older Model With A Slide And Grill Kit

Camp Chef Slide and Grill 24" Pellet Grill

Suppose you already have an older model of a Camp Chef pellet grill, and the new Camp Chef Slide and Grill technology are appealing to you.

In that case, you, unfortunately, need to buy yourself a newer pellet grill that is already equipped with this technology.

You cannot retrofit an older model with a slide and grill kit.

Build Quality And Construction

Both Traeger and Camp Chef use high-quality materials, including stainless steel and cast iron. The carts/stands are sturdy and durable, and the fit-and-finish is always top-notch.

Where Traeger has an edge is the double-wall construction found on the Ironwood and Timberline Series grills. This extra layer helps better regulate the temperature inside by providing a barrier from the temperature outside.

Verdict

Both are great, but Traeger wins this round.

Easy Ash Cleanout System

Camp Chef knows how irritating ash build-up is. When your pellet grill experiences too much build-up, the burn cup may struggle with lighting.

So, the only way to clean up your pellet grill is to remove the greasy racks, trays but not with the Woodwind 24. You can do all of that with just a pull of a lever.

All you need is a removable cup, and you can collect all the contents of the burn pot without messing around.

The pellet smoker is fitted with a slider rod that attaches to the flat plate below the burner pot. When the rod is pulled out, the plate moves and drops the ash into a cleanout cup.

It saved me so much time when it came to cleaning since I didnt have to remove the drip pan, heat deflector, or drip tray.

According to the Camp Chef website, they are the only pellet grills in the industry with this system.

Do I Need The Camp Chef Slide And Grill Technology

The Camp Chef Slide and Grill Technology bring more to the outdoor grilling and cooking experience with your family.

As long as you are looking to make this experience more enjoyable, not just for you, but for the whole family, with some delicious food, of course, this is definitely what you want.

Moreover, with the pellet grills from Camp Chef, not only do you get all of the benefits of using a pellet grill, but you also get the Slide and Grill technology from them.

It is like a bonus addition to the already great outdoor cooking experience that you are given from the pellet grills made by Camp Chef.

While many people might also think that you end up with a lot more grease and meat in the firepot, which might also foul up your igniter, it still does not change the fact that this is an experience that is quite fun.

Being able to grill in a smoker just by the pull of a knob does sound quite versatile and useful.

If you think that you need this versatility on their family dinner table, then Camp Chef makes sure that you get it.

Slide And Clean For Easy Ash Removal

Slide and Grill was likely inspired by Camp Chefs unique and useful slide and clean ash removal system. Although pellet smokers dont create much ash, they need regular cleaning, which is a pain with most other designs because the greasy grates and drip pan must be removed to get at the fire pot where the pellets burn .

Camp Chefs solution is a trap door under the fire pot.

The bottom slides back letting ash drop into a removable cup, shown below.

You still have to clean out the bottom of the smoke box periodically, but you dont have to worry about a clogged firepot that could impair the smokers performance.

After we fired up SG the first time, the ash removal slider was suddenly difficult to move. Camp Chefs customer service was aware of the problem. The Chinese manufacturing facility that makes SmokePro SG applies a coating to prevent rust while the unit is in transit or in storage. This coating can melt down into the ash removal slider and gunk it up. We were advised to remove the ash cup and smack the unfinished metal trap door vigorously with a hammer from underneath to loosen it up. Camp Chef claims this only occurs on a small percentage of units.

Cleaning The Camp Chef Woodwind

Camp Chef have made light work of cleaning their Woodwinds with the patented Ash Kickin Cleanout system. Basically, its a little container that fits underneath the firebox so the ash falls down into it and can be easily emptied, instead of having the remove the grates and heat deflector and shop vac the ash out.

It does save a decent amount of time. But, youll still need to wipe down the cooking grates and the heat deflector plate which catches the drippings.

You can get disposable grease bucket liners to eliminate one other messy job too.

The Woodwinds also have a pellet hopper clean out door so you can empty any unused pellets easily.

Overall, theyre straightforward to clean and a little easier than average.

Main Features And Specifications

The grill comes with a useful LED digital temp control that offers you full control over the heat inside the grill. At the same time, the low and high smoke temp feature allows you to set the right smoke temperature depending on the type of meat that you are about to cook, be it beef or fish. The temperature readout feature is so complex that it will deliver the internal cooking and food temps.

The grill weighs no less than 127 pounds and its hopper capacity is of 20 lbs. of pellets. Last, but not least, the cooking height of the grill is 32.5 inches.

Slide And Grill Technology

Camp Chef SmokePro SG 24 Pellet Grill and Smoker Features and Review

Most pellet grills operate with a convection style cooking method where a fan circulates heat and smoke from smoldering wood pellets around your grills chamber.

Camp Chef has created a feature in their grills to help recreate a direct heat method of grilling which can be useful if your goal is to make a crust on your grilled food.

All you have to do is pull a knob, and a sliding door opens to expose a portion of your grill grates to open flames. Using this setting also allows for your grill to achieve temperatures up to 650°F.

Easy To Use Controller

The digital controller is a breeze to use, even if you operate the unit in direct sunlight. The large digital display is easy to read from the distance and the control scheme is simple to use. You have a large central knob that controls ignition, heat and smoke levels along with a master power switch. Connectors for the included dual meat probes are also located on the front control panel.

I found the control know a little touchy to control but you get used to it. The large control knob acts as an enter button and also is used to scroll through the menu options. You can also use the Camp Chef Connect App to manage a lot of these functions which I find easier to use.

What Can Be Improved

Overall, I was very impressed with the Woodwind.

The overall grilling experience has been a delight however, there are a few things that I would change if I had the chance.

There seem to be a few problems with the temperature accuracy. It doesnt happen often, and it isnt a big deal however, I have noticed a slight variance with the temperature the grill is using and the one I set it to. It is still much more manageable than a charcoal grill.
