Inches are constantly depicted after the grill version, showing exactly how large the barbecuing area is.

The Ironwood 880 has a barbecuing space of 880 square inches.

A 780 square inch barbecuing section is provided by the Pro 780.

Grilling space on the Timberline 1300 is 1300 square inches.

As a policy of thumb, larger grills will require more pellets to be warmed up.

Think about a smaller sized grill for times when just two or 3 people will be cooking at as soon as, as opposed to squandering pellets trying to warm up a larger grill. You may be far better off buying the smaller grill and also making use of the cost savings to acquire more pellets.

Pellet Grill Vs Propane Grills

Both gas grills and pellet grills offer convenience to the consumer. And when Pit Boss® bursted onto the scene a few years ago, they both offered affordability as well. However, there are some major differences between the two types of grills.

Gas grills are great for cooking at mid to high to high temperatures. However, due to poor insulation, gas grills typically dont perform well at low temperatures. Gas grills need proper ventilation and because of this they dont typically perform well as smokers.

Pellet grills also offer more flavor options due to gas itself being flavorless. The wood pellets, on the other hand, can come in a variety of natural flavors that help enhance the food.

It is also a little easier to control temperature on a pellet grill. Each gas grill has a dialing in process with the user but a pellet grill can be set to the temperature you desire within a 15°F variance.

The Different Types Of Pellet Grill/smoker Control Panels

Traeger Grills – How do they Work

On early generation Traeger wood pellet grill/smokers you would have found a control panel that looks very similar to the image above. However, the current generation Traeger control panels built on the D2 Direct Drive platform are very different, and Im not just talking about how they look, Im talking about how they actually function.

Ive covered this previously in my Traeger Pro Series Gen 1 vs Gen 2 article. The previous generation Traeger control panels were time-based. In other words, to achieve and maintain a set temperature the control panel would turn the auger/fan on and off for a certain amount of time. It does work, however using this time-based method the actual temperature can fluctuate typically around 25 degrees from the set temperature, sometimes more.

The current Traeger D2 control panel operates on what is called a PID algorithm: Image Traegergrills.com

The current Traeger Pro Series, Ironwood and Timberline models all feature similar versions of the above control panel which function on whats called a PID algorithm. With a PID control panel its constantly comparing the actual temperature inside the cooking chamber to the set temperature.

That was in 1988. Today Traeger Grills has expanded to several different models of grills, from their Pro Series to their Timberline Series.

And Traeger has become the most well-known brand on the market. Pellet grills give consumers the flavor of wood smoke with the convenience of a gas grill.

Wood pellet grills use real wood, all-natural wood pellets as fuel. Unlike propane, natural gas, or charcoal grills, burning pellets is not harmful to the environment. They come in a variety of flavors and are FDA approved.

Automation Helps You Eliminate Stress When Hosting

Because the auger feeds the fire pot with wood pellets from the hopper, there’s an auto-ignition of the pellets. Unlike charcoal grills, theres no need for a charcoal starter. Remember the days when you stressed about adding charcoal midway through barbequing or smoking? Traeger eliminates this process all together.

Why Is Rotisserie Better

A rotisserie grill is a common method of grilling. It consists of a rotary engine that contains a rod where food is placed. The motor spins the rod, which spins the food attached to the rod, and causes all sides to cook at the same time. It produces more consistent results, heating even the center of the meat because food rotates as it cooks. The advantage of using a rotisserie is that the food gets nice and browned externally while remaining juicy inside.

Do You Have To Season A Pellet Smoker

Yes.

According to the Traegers Owners Manual, the smoker must be seasoned before you place any food on the grill.

The grill will need to run on high for 45 minutes with the door closed to be seasoned properly.

Grills need to be seasoned for two reasons.

  • The first is to burn off any oils and coatings that were introduced during the manufacturing process. You certainly dont want to eat any of that nasty stuff.
  • The second is to cure the paint. Many paints used in grills generally require high heat to burn off volatiles and form an impermeable barrier.

Seasoning also makes food taste better and will extend the life of your grill. Seasoning isnt just for pellet smokers. Any grill should be seasoned before use.
