There is serious firepower inside what looks like youre run-of-the-mill grill that sits on the curb at Home Depot. The three-burner, multi-vent, barrel-style grill reaches temperatures in excess of 600 degrees without the use of an infrared burner, a necessary tool for most non-premium grills to hit temps that high. At 600 degrees, youre able to put a proper sear on anything, not just grill marks . This power is aided by the addition of heat diffusers over the burners upside-down, V-shaped steel shields that even out heat distribution and good airflow. As with any frugal-minded grill, you shouldnt expect it to stay in top shape for too long, but you wont find a cheap grill packing this much ordinance. In testing

What Are Gas Grills

Gas grills are units that somewhat resemble a traditional barbecue grilling unit.

The main difference is that the former uses gas to power it.

Compared to traditional systems, it takes less time to heat the entire cooking surface to prepare it for grilling.

It is also easier to control gas grills. You simply have to turn a knob like you might on your stove to turn the heat up and down.

With gas grills, cleaning time is faster and usually hassle-free.

You wont have to dispose of ash.

Most grills come with removable drip trays, so managing grease is a smooth and easy process.

Gas grills also offer instant ignition, temperature control, customization, and flexibility.

Some models have multiple burners allowing you to cook different types of food at the same time.

They also come with a wide range of accessories, which means you can personalize the grill easily.

Reasons to avoid

Traeger Pro 575 Pellet Grill makes the process of smoking pretty much stress free. You add hardwood pellets to a hopper, set a target temperature, and the grill does the rest. It has an electronically-controlled thermostat that works like the one in your indoor oven. The only caveat is that if the temp you want is super-hot to get a steak browned and crusty on the outside and rosy on the inside, you wont be getting it from this grill which tops out at 500°F.

If you want to go about your yard work, or even just loll in a hammock while your ribs are smoking, you can connect the Traeger to an app which will let you know when its time to baste, raise the temp to finish them off, or alert you that theyre ready to serve.

Instead of grates, the Blackstone 36″ Griddle Cooking Station has the kind of large flat cooking surface you see in diners. That gives you room for 28 burgers at once, and means your hot dogs and shrimp wont fall through the slats.

Underneath are four burners that you can set to different temperatures, so you can keep garlic bread warm on low while simultaneously searing some steaks. Just keep in mind that you wont get grill marks, and wont be able to smoke ribs or brisket.

How Do Gas Grills Work

Best Gas Grill for the Money in 2021

A typical gas grill uses propane or natural gas as its energy source.

Unlike a traditional grill, it emits less smoke because of this.

To ensure a stable supply of fuel for the unit, the gas grill is equipped with a regulator.

The fire resulting from lighting up the gas spreads heat on the cooking area. This allows you to cook your food using the desired intensity and heat.

Before you start grilling, make sure to check if the propane tank has enough fuel.

A 20-pound propane tank usually provides around 25 hours of grilling time.

As gas grills are easily lit and extinguished, they provide simple and easy methods for a quality cooking experience.

While some say that you wont achieve the same smoky flavor from using charcoal, the convenience of using gas grills is worth it.

To others, gas grills offer the most mouth-watering grilled meat than other fuel sources, like paper or wood.

With natural gases as a fuel source, gas grills produce less harmful smoke, making them environmentally friendly.

Once youre done grilling, you just have to turn off the gas source, and youre good to go.

But to make sure that the gas grill youre buying will last, you need to properly maintain it. For instance, you need to keep the gas grill covered if youre not using it.

Clean the grill grates regularly and the entire grill inside and out using warm, soapy water occasionally.

This depends on how much and how often you grill.

Why You Should Trust Us

Before opening the valve on a single propane tank, we spoke with more than a dozen experts.

Joe Salvaggio of Big Apple BBQ spent two hours explaining the fundamentals of gas-grill design, function, materials, and maintenance. Joe and his brother Tony have run Big Apple BBQ, one of the New York regions leading grill shops, for over 30 years. The store carries grills from multiple manufacturers, ranging from $400 backyard portables to five-figure custom built-ins. Because Salvaggio is an independent retailer, he was able to speak freely about what he saw as the relative strengths and weaknesses of various designs.

At the 2017 Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Expo, we interviewed senior product managers from almost every major grill-maker in attendance, including all the brands that wound up featured in our test: Weber, Broil King, and Napoleon. We spoke with multiple makers of high-end grills, too, as they predominate at HPBE. Though we wouldnt be testing their grills, we felt that knowing what goes into making a $4,000 grill helped us evaluate the less expensive grills in our test.

Kamado Grills: Factors To Consider

AirflowJust like regular charcoal grills, kamado grills rely on airflow to regulate heat. More air moving over the coals lets a fire burn hotter, while limiting the flow keeps coals just lit, for low-and-slow cooking. Look for a model with a tight-fitting lid and solid dampers or vents. Many kamado grills have a gasket on the lid, and even locking latches, to create the tightest seal possible. Some kamado grills also have multiple dampers, which makes it easier to fine-tune the temperature youre shooting for.MaterialWe divide kamado grills into two categories: ceramic and nonceramic. Ceramic grills tend to be heavier, with inch-thick walls all the way around. Nonceramic models are made of metal. They tend to weigh less and to be more maneuverable.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

We wish Weber would take a cue from some competitors and make the bars of its warming racks run front to back, parallel to the main grates. That way, you could easily slide a spatula under stuff thats warming. As it is, the warming-rack bars run edge to edge, and you have to awkwardly jimmy a spatula in there sideways.

Reasons to avoid

The Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill 22-inch has a grate thats big enough for a whole mess of hamburger patties. However, because its easy to adjust the heat by opening and closing the vents in the bottom and in the lid, this grill is remarkably versatile and can definitely go beyond burgers and brats. It can turn out a perfectly seared medium-rare porterhouse or thoroughly-cooked chicken with a crispy golden-brown skin. The grate is hinged on both sides so its easy to add more briquets if youre having a party and turning out hot dogs throughout the evening.

Extras include a thermometer in the lid and hooks for hanging up your tools. A heat shield underneath the lid handle makes it easy to lift without singeing your hand, and the lid rests on the side of the grill while you flip the steaks or baste the ribs. Weber 51060001 Q1200 Liquid Propane Grill

Why youll love this:

The Weber Q series are some of the best portable gas grills on the market, and the Q1200 is no exception. While its not one of the best Q series models, it does have a much more reasonable price than many, with decent cooking power.

Primarily though, its strength lies in how durable and compact it is, while still allowing a compact tabletop model to provide extra utility in the form of the side tables and cast iron cooking grates, which add to the overall quality of the grill. A fine choice if you need a portable gas grill, though its no replacement for a full sized model.

Each side of the grill has a small table that is the perfect size for prepping veggies and other ingredients. Those shelves fold flat against the grill too when not in use. No matter where you want to store the grill, youll find that it can fit.

Fuel Propane Or Natural Gas

When it comes to gas grills, youve got two choices with fuel: propane or natural gas Or, possibly you have no choice at all natural gas isnt available everywhere.

If youve already got a hook-up installed, then going with natural may be an easy decision. Theyre convenient, as they never run out of fuel. If youd have to have a line put in, though, youll need to decide whats best for you.

Is there a good place to have the line run to? Will it be cost-prohibitive? Do you want to be tethered to a single spot for grilling?

Propane is the most flexible, but natural gas is incredibly convenient. Think carefully before making your choice. By the way, some grills can be converted from propane to natural gas, giving you the freedom to opt in to LNG cooking later on.

How We Tested Gas Grills

Over the course of four days in Spring 2017, we put our gas grills through a battery of tests designed to demonstrate their qualities and highlight their differences. We cooked burgers on high heat to see how well the grills seared meat and how intense and even was the heat they could generate across the whole grate surface. We slow-grilled cut-up chickens to see if the grills could hold a low temperature evenly across the whole grate. And we roasted whole chickens indirectly on both low and high heat to see if the grills could create browned skin and perfectly cook meat without charring. Sam Sifton, editor of the Cooking section of The New York Times joined us for these tests. In 2018 we repeated these tests, pitting the new Weber Spirit II E-310 against our upgrade pick, the Weber Genesis II E-310.

For the high-heat, whole-grate burger testan indicator of the grills ability to pump out uniform, high heat without creating an infernowe heated the grills on high with their lids down for 15 minutes . We then oiled the grates and distributed 12 to 15 6-ounce patties across the whole cooking surface. While the burgers cooked we kept an eye out for flare-upstheyre not desirable, as they char the meat and create rancid smokeand looked at the evenness of cooking on the different areas of the grates. After about 10 minutes of cooking , we compared how well each grill had seared the burgers, looked for any patties that were charred or still unacceptably raw, and took a taste.
