Pellet Smokers | What You Need To Know About Pellet Smoker Grills HowToBBQRight

Pellet grills have a hopper, or basket, that holds the wood pellets. These pellets are then driven into a pot through a shaft with an auger. The pot has a heating rod and a fan below that is thermostatically controlled just like the heat in your home, Marks explained. The fan controls the oxygen flow, creating efficient use of the wood pellets as well as a very narrow window of temperature fluctuation and rapid recovery time when you open and close the door.

The heating rod then fires up the pellets drawn into the pot by the auger while the fan blows. When it comes to temperature, its typically set it and forget it with pellet grills. They typically are able to heat up to 175 to 550 degrees Fahrenheit without you needing to tend a fire. It’s pretty simple for the cook you turn it on and set it to your desired temp and, as long as you keep the hopper full of pellets, itll keep cooking, said Ray Dr. BBQ Lampe, author of Dr. BBQ’s Big-Time Barbecue Cookbook and member of the American Royal BBQ Hall of Fame. A big positive is that the pellets are 100 percent wood so it’s a clean burning wood fire with even heat. These are things that all barbecue cooks strive for and the pellet grill makes it easy.

Don’t be afraid of using a pellet grill if you are a beginner. Using a pellet grill is relatively more comfortable than a gas grill or a charcoal grill. Smoking or barbecuing is way more straightforward with a pellet grill. You only need to follow the guidelines.

While searching for how to use pellet grills, many things can appear complicated to you at first. You are sure to understand all the features and usage quickly and easily. Here I will lead the way to learn pellet grill use quickly. I hope this will help you through your learning process.

Pellet grills need electricity to operate. First, plug in the pellet grill into a power source. After that, you have to regulate the temperature controller. There are many ranges of temperature. Set the temperature at your desired one and press the start button.

Once you’ve turned the machine on, you need to wait for at least 10-15 minutes so that the grill can reach your fixed temperature. Then, you can place the ingredients you want to cook on the grill. The most impressive part is that you do not need to worry about the process of cooking.

That means the grill will estimate the number of pellets needed or when the furnace needs to be included. You have to confirm that a sufficient amount of fuel is added to the container, and that’s all. To ensure the cooking is perfect, you can also connect a meat probe thermometer on the grill. Lastly, you have to clean the grill properly once you are done cooking.

Why Are They Called Both Pellet Grills And Pellet Smokers Which Is It

Youll see the two names used interchangeably across the Internet. But, are they two different things, or is this a true all-in-one solution for all your backyard cooking needs?

Well, they look like offset smokers. And they look like standard grills, too. The truth is, while they perform many of the functions of both types, they arent really either. Confused?

Steven Raichlen of Barbecue Bible hit the nail most squarely on the head when he wrote:

they have more in common with convection ovens than the offset wood-burning smokers they resemble.

While many units are capable of temperatures over 500F, its ambient heat. They cook evenly, but it wont sear like a grill. Searing requires intense, direct heat applied to the meat.

You can, of course, smoke in a pellet smoker. And, you can roast large cuts, just as you would on a standard grill set up for indirect cooking.

For that matter, you can cook a steak you just wont get quite as good a gorgeous sear and the resulting flavor boost.

Our pellet grill ratings include 12 models from brands such as Broil King, Camp Chef, Louisiana Grills, Pit Boss, Traeger, Weber, and Z Grills. Heres how these grills perform as a group across specific tasks in CRs tests.

Indirect Cooking Perhaps the biggest appeal of a pellet grill is its ability to maintain a low, steady temperature for hours on end without the need to make any adjustments. Thats the precision youd want when it comes to slow-smoking ribs, brisket, or pulled pork without burning or drying out the food. All the pellet grills weve tested perform this crucial task well, and as a group, its the cooking function at which they perform the best.

Evenness This test captures how uniformly the heat is deflected across the entire cooking surface. That doesnt matter so much for smoking, but its critical when youre cooking a bigger batch of foods that are similar in size and shape, like burgers and hot dogs. An even-heating grill ensures that everything comes off the grill at once. Pellet grills tend to heat very evenly, and as a group, theyre far more even-heating than gas grills. Those that fare best in our testing overall heat a bit more evenly than some of the lower-scoring models.

    Lets talk pellet grills:

    Pros

  • Easy of Use – There is not much of a learning curve and you can could great food easily. You can also use temperatures from other videos and transfer the recipes to a pellet grill pretty easily.

  • Lack of smoke flavor – You can get good smoke flavor, but you cant get that intense smoke flavor that you would get from true smokers or a Kamado style grill.

  • Lacks some grilled flavor- This is subjective, some love it, some dont. You can get great flavor, but not going to have that cooked over charcoal taste.

  • Temperatures – Not a huge con, more education. The top level is cooler than the bottom level. If you are cooking a lot of meat you will need to rotate the meat to get even cooking.

Should You Get A Pellet Smoker Or A Pellet Smoker Grill Combo

Wood pellet smokers and grills offer the most convenient way to smoke meats because temperature is controlled and the wood is automatically fed into the fire. Just add to the hopper as needed. Vertical or horizontal wood pellet smokers and grills are almost set it and forget it easy. Almost.

I have a vertical smoker and a horizontal smoker grill and I can tell you they have their differences. To help you decide between the two, think about how you plan to use it.

    • The smoker grill combo is the best way to have a smoker and a grill in a single unit. That may be a big deal if space is important and/or if you see yourself using both equally. Most units heat indirectly, but others, like the Pit Boss Austin XL have a slider plate to allow for direct flame heating and meat searing.
    • A vertical smoker is a better smoker in my opinion. They also tend to be lighter and more maneuverable, but they are not a grill. You probably wont be barbequing burgers or searing steaks in it. Its more like a roaster oven at higher temperatures.
