Considerations For Your Budget
When it comes to cost, you may be in two camps. You could either be looking to save money on your project Or simply trying to figure out how to put your total cost together. For the latter, check out our article on determining an outdoor kitchen budget.
If you are trying to keep the cost down You can create a DIY kitchen for as much or as little as you like. Ultimate cost will depend on the materials you use and the size of the island you create.
Just remember, if youre working on a tight budget Never compromise on the materials you use. Poor quality materials will lead your DIY outdoor kitchen to have a short lifespan. Its as simple as that!
We can understand why its enticing to buy cheap materials. It keeps spending low And you may even be able to do more than you initially planned. Unfortunately You wont be too happy when you have to pay for replacements and repairs down the line. Its either pay more upfront Or never stop paying!
To avoid spending too much, we have a strategy we like to employ. Start with creating a list of must haves and nice to haves. So when that cost starts looking a bit high You can begin to eliminate some of your nice to haves. This will ensure you retain all the elements you truly desire without breaking the bank.
For example, you may not need a refrigerator on your outdoor kitchen. This omission alone can shave the length of your island down from 12 to 10.

Outdoor Grill Station Option : An Island With A Built
This option is basically creating a mini outdoor kitchen. Such an outdoor grill station can be fully customized to resemble the house exterior, not only with finishes but also shape and color. As you can see in the pictures above, it can be a part of a relaxing zone or a freestanding construction.
Actually, we have 3 types of shapes shown in the pictures above: along the wall , an L-shape, and an island . These are shapes that work very well in grill stations.
Pictures above present a few ways an outdoor grill station can resemble the overall look of the backyard.
In the first picture, the grill station is covered with the same concrete as on the wall. The second shows that what bonds the area might not be material but a color. The last picture presents an outdoor grill station made out of brick in the same color as the fireplace stone. It is not identical, but it works really well.
The price of an outdoor grill station depends vastly on the chosen appliance and a method of assembly and a type of structure. The most budget-friendly option is, obviously, DIY. The second is buying a prefabricated structure. The third is going with a contractor.
If youre going with DIY, the budget rather will not go over $1,500. A prefab outdoor grill station is going to cost about $2,300. A complete custom outdoor grill station will start at $2,700 . These are starting points that can be easily increased.

Removing the raised rings will create a smooth surface for the next course to be placed on top of. If there are any additional pieces left over they can be used when this pattern repeats.

Garden Fire Pits Made Easy My Final Tip
It is quick and easy to build a fire pit using only cinder blocks. You do not even need mortar! To construct a more permanent fire pit and one that looks more finished, you can cement the blocks together.
Choosing a safe location to build a fire pit is critical! Provide at least 20 feet between the fire pit and any surrounding trees, buildings, or structures.
There are many different fire pit designs you can build with cinder blocks.
Round designs use fewer blocks than square designs, so they are slightly less expensive. A sunken-in fire pit looks beautiful one may not even guess it came from cinder blocks!
The blocks can be stacked 2 or 3 blocks tall any taller usually blocks the flames from view and directs the heat skywards. Stacking the blocks with the holes facing upwards is good! But, to give the fire more ventilation, rotate a few blocks to create draw holes.
It is vital to let the mortar set for at least a week before using your new fire pit for the first time. Setting your mortar will ensure that it doesnt crack and lasts you a long time.

Grab a couple of old cinderblocks to keep your little grill safe while in use.
Double Check And Clean Up
Run a check over everything: make sure the countertop is staying in place where it needs to be, check the screws on the aluminum plating.
Now is your chance to act as your work at OSHA and youre going to either pass or fail this setup.
Check that everything is level and that all concrete dust has been cleaned up from the area.
I recommend sweeping and perhaps vacuuming out the new cabinet space just to be sure, and wiping down the counter and grill lid to ensure there are no fingerprints.
Take a step back and look at what youve done. You made that!

Finish With A Countertop
Once you have reached your desired height, it is now time to finish with a countertop. Choose a countertop material to fit your design. In this example we used concrete slabs that are cut to size. Set your countertops in place and check for level. Shims may be used if adjustments are necessary. Secure the countertops in place with masonry adhesive , move your grill into place and you are ready to fire up the BBQ!
**NOTE: A larger opening will be needed if your grill is a larger size than the one shown in this example. To increase the width of the grill area opening, add additional AB Yorks, AB Dublins and or split blocks to your wall panel to enlarge the grill area. The minimum increment you can increase your width by is approximately 4 in. .

Our Modern Cottage Bathroom Reveal
This post has been a long time coming. Saber Grills sent us one of their 4-burner Elite grills two years ago. Shortly after it arrived, I hurt my back and the project was postponed. Winter rolled in and the grill, along with cabinets, drawers and doors, sat in our garage for months. Then last summer we had to fix a few things with the foundation of our deck and didnt end up building the grill area until September just in time for our photo shoot with DIY Magazine .
And since the magazine wanted to show the outdoor area first, weve just been sitting on this project for the past 10 months! But finally, we can share with you how we built this:
First, disclaimers. And I wish I didnt have to, but thats the world we live in and we have to cover our bases.
A. I cant encourage you to build your outdoor area the way we built ours. Every state has their own building codes when it comes to something that could catch your house on fire, so study the recommendations of the grill you buy, the code for your state, and adjust according to your circumstances. We consulted with a couple builders and took our plan to our local zoning office, but just because we did it like this doesnt mean you can or should.
C. There is no C. But a list with only two items seems underwhelming, so this item has been added for affect. Lets get started.
1. Planned the design and sketched it out, along with exact measurements
2. Framed out the first section using pressure treated lumber
Choosing The Wrong Appliances
You may know the appliances, grill and other features you want in your outdoor island, but are they right for your space? Of course you want to avoid installing unnecessary appliances. But its also important that you make sure you choose appliances that are suitable for your unique design and rated for outdoor use. If non-outdoor rated appliances are used outdoors, they may not withstand exposure to environmental conditions and the warranty can be voided. You also want to ensure you have the right sized appliances for your space, and double and triple check the cut out measurements for your appliances before the cut out is made, in order to ensure the projected space you have to install them in is big enough.

Outdoor Grill Station On A Deck
The deck is a perfect location for an outdoor grill station. There are multiple areas you can install a grill station on it:
- a central island,
- along the outer edges of the deck,
- against the house.
The universal layout out of these three is along the outer edges. It works for small and large decks as well as for attached and detached. Such a placed outdoor grill station doesnt take a lot of space.
If your goal is to create a wow factor with an outdoor grill station of yours, going with a central island may be a way to go. It is a better choice for a big deck, as it takes a lot of space, but it also brings a lot of conveniences, as the grill can be accessed from multiple sides.
Against the house might seem the most obvious choice , as it takes a small amount of space and doesnt block the view. Unfortunately, very often, it requires range hood installation .
Attached to the house deck is a super convenient location as the kitchen is usually a few steps away, so it is effortless to bring stuff out and in. Placing an outdoor grill station on a deck requires a few steps, though.
Number 1 is inspecting your deck before the installation. According to the North American Deck & Railing Association, half of the decks in the United States need to be replaced or repaired. They actually prepared a checklist you can follow to inspect the deck on your own . To be safe, it is worth paying a professional for an inspection .
Assemble The Main Frame
- Using angle iron, cut a 24-in. back piece. Cut both ends of the back piece to a 45-degree angle to match the angled cut on the ends of the top-most side pieces you cut earlier.
- Weld the back piece to the side frames, joining them. Level up the growing frame by shimming the assembly as it sits on the ground, then use a six-inch level on the upper side pieces to orient them so they’re horizontal.
- Using angle iron, cut two upper side pieces, each nine inches long, and weld onto the back legs.
