The Grilled Cheese Test
Just to be extra thorough in this taste test, we fired up the stove and made some grilled cheese sandwiches to test the melting capabilities of each brand of American cheese. No one likes an unmelted rubbery slice on their grilled cheese sandwich, after all, so we wanted to make sure that the Aldi brand wouldn’t let us down during this test. We made the sandwiches the classic way, with a pad of butter and white bread in a skillet on the stovetop. We loaded up each sandwich with a whopping three slices of cheese. We understand that such an amount might be a bit much for some people, but we really wanted to see what level of ooey-gooey melty cheesiness we could get out of both the Kraft and Aldi cheeses.
The first sandwich was made with the Kraft American singles, which melted as expected, with a lovely little stretch as we pulled the sandwich halves apart. The next sandwich was then made with the Happy Farms American singles. It took slightly longer to get the sandwich to the ideal melty stage about another minute on the skillet, all told but the result was equally gooey and satisfying. All of the minor flavor differences we noticed during the other methods of tasting still applied when eating the grilled cheese sandwiches. The Kraft singles were ever so slightly cheesier, while the Aldi brand singles were a touch creamier.
Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe
Good morning yall todays recipe is so simple but I feel that its worth sharing. I want to show you in my opinion what the best grilled cheese sandwich looks like. Grilled cheese sandwiches are one of our favorite meals. The best part is that it takes just a couple of minutes to make one. In order to make a good grilled cheese sandwich you dont need any fancy cheese or bread. I use god old store bought white bread and cheddar cheese slices.
My favorite cheese to use is from Sargento. I think it has the best flavor and it melts really well. I very much prefer it over Kraft Singles which is what I think is the most traditional cheese used for grilled cheese sandwiches. If you havent tried it yet with Sargento cheese you really should!
What You Need For Sheet Pan Grilled Cheese
- Bread: Any kind of bread works for this sheet pan grilled cheese, but we love a pre-sliced loaf of sourdough.
- Cheddar or American cheese: Use your favorite sliced cheddar or even Kraft singles!
- Salted butter: Butter is used for toasting and flavor. Dont skimp!
- Mayonnaise: This is optional! But we love the flavor of a thin layer of mayo in a grilled cheese.

Kraft Singles La And My Grilled Cheese Creation
My name is Christy. Im going to be visiting you this weekend. Now I know this is likely not anything for you to take notice of because apparently, lots of people visit you every day, but for me, its a pretty big deal. You see, Ive never been out of the Southern United States except for a visit to Canada a few years back. On that trip I tried and fell in love with poutine, blueberry pie, and that maple candy which is just pure sugar and about as bad for you as Southern cooking butwell thats not my point. Oh, in the interest of full disclosure, I also went to D.C. for a weekend but I am told DC doesnt count as leaving the south. This confuses the heck out of me, to be honest but Ill roll with it. Im not really a troublemaker, California, honest.
Anyway, back to my point. You see, I am coming for a visit. This is a HUGE deal for me. Kraft Singles is sending me to see you! Im being flown out of Alabama and arriving in L.A. Friday evening in order to attend the 7th Annual Grilled Cheese invitational on Saturday. I am thrilled, elated, overjoyed, and scared out of my mind. All of this equals to EXCITEMENT! Ive literally been dancing all over the place since I was first chosen to do this! Just wait til you meet me, youll see how excited I am. Im even excited about my layover! I may get to have it in Denver and that means Ill get to see a real mountain for the first time! ~squeals~

Best Cheese For Grilled Cheese
The most popular kind of cheese to use for grilled cheese is sliced American cheese or cheddar cheese. Our favorite cheese for this recipe is Tillamooks medium-cut orange cheddar. Its not too sharp and its thick and creamy.
If youre a grilled cheese lover, you know the cheese can make or break the sammie, so feel free to get creative and make it your own! We prefer our cheese pre-sliced because its super simple, but you can always slice or shred block cheese, too. Here are more cheese options to try:
- White cheddar
- Or a combo of any of these!

What Kraft Singles Are Really Made Of
The list of ingredients isn’t exactly clear, but what’s obvious is that Kraft Singles aren’t the most traditional cheese you can find. According to Business Insider, Kraft American cheese is usually a mixture of other cheeses that have been melted together. In an interview with Business Insider, Michael Tunick, a research chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, explains that J.L. Kraft created Kraft American cheese because he was trying to get rid of some older cheeses.
Kraft’s solution, according to Extra Crispy, was to melt down all of the unusable pieces of cheese he had, then blend them together with a few other ingredients. The result was single slices of American cheese. Though Kraft was the first to process cheese this way, other manufacturers started to follow suit, which is why you’ll see products on shelves like Velveeta and Kraft Singles that taste like cheese but have labels like “pasteurized processed cheese food.”
Though it doesn’t sound very appetizing, it’s completely legal to make cheese this way, as long as its label calls out that it’s processed cheese, not real cheese. Hopefully knowing where it really comes from doesn’t ruin Kraft Singles for you, but despite its less-than-appetizing origins, it’s still one of the easiest cheese to toss on your sandwich when you’re craving an epic cheese pull.
How To Make A Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Im showing you how to make them on the stove, which is quick and easy. All you need is a skillet and a lid to cover it. Depending on how many sandwiches you make, you may need to cook them in batches.
- Make the Parmesan garlic butter: Place the softened butter in a bowl and mix until its creamy. Add the Parmesan and garlic salt and stir to combine.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Spread the butter on one side of each slice of bread. Spread both kinds of cheddar cheese on the other side. Layer the bacon on top followed by one slice each of the Havarti and Gruyere cheese. Top with another slice of bread and spread some of the butter on the top.
- Cook the grilled cheese: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Once its hot, place the sandwiches in the pan and cook them on one side until golden brown about three to four minutes. Flip the sandwiches and cook them on the other side. At this point, I like to add a few drops of water to the pan and cover it with a lid. This will create steam that will help the cheese melt.

I know, its putting one more nail in the coffin of health for this meal. But the combination of oil and butter is key.
Preheat a tablespoon of oil in the pan while you butter the bread all the way to the edges with whipped or softened butter. Some people prefer mayonnaise for the job, which is fine, but Im just a dairy gal through and through.
When the solid butter hits the liquid oil, it starts a time-release reaction that slowly toasts the bread, letting it soak up all that tasty buttery flavor while the cheese melts. And speaking of slow

Mel’s Tips For Making The Best Grilled Cheese
If you dont like sourdough bread, any thick-sliced sturdy bread will work. You want something sturdy so the bread can hold all of the cheese without getting soggy.
Be sure to monitor the heat. You dont want the pan too hot otherwise, the bread will overcook or burn before the cheese melts. I find that medium-low works perfectly but every stove is different, so just keep an eye on it and adjust the heat if needed.
This probably goes without saying, but these grilled cheese sandwiches are best hot off the stove. Slice them in half and watch all of that melted cheese ooze out!
If you are making them in batches, you can keep the cooked ones warm in the oven. Just place a baking sheet in a low oven and keep the sandwiches in there while you finish the rest.
Serve your amazing grilled cheese sandwiches with potato chips, French fries, or a bowl of tomato soup on the side for dunking.
Once you try this recipe, you might find yourself having grilled cheese night at least once a week. Its hard to resist these, and theyre definitely not your average grilled cheese! Enjoy!
Don’t Forget The Butter
Be sure to butter the outside of the bread. Use real butter, preferably salted. Butter adds great flavor to your grilled cheese and helps to create that golden brown exterior. Some people may opt for mayonnaise instead because they believe that butter will make their grilled cheese soggy.
As long as you use real butter, a substantial slice of bread, and follow my directions below, this will not be the case. While mayonnaise does create a nice crust, if you love butter as much as I do, there is no comparison.
Trying to be a little more fancy? Make a compound butter for your grilled cheese. Try mixing butter with herbs, honey, mustard, ranch, etc. to bump up the flavor.

To Mayo Or Not To Mayo
Oh the great debate. Should you add mayo to the outside of your bread or not? Honestly, its all about preference. I grew up keeping my grilled cheese sandwich super simple. Bread, butter, and cheeseno mayo.
If youd like to add mayo, be my guest! Add a tablespoon of mayo onto the outside of both pieces of bread before frying.
