Weber Grills Industrial History

Somewhere in the 1950s, the founder of Weber Grills, George Stephen Sr. worked as an employee in the sales department of Weber Brothers Metal Works. This was a company that his father with a few of his friends operated at the time.

A Weber grill is known for its domed shape which is believed to give the best possible shape. This shape and the first grill itself date back to Weber Brothers Metal Works itself. The company was founded somewhere in the late 1890s. It was based in Chicago and manufactured a large variety of metal products. It produced metal products like hinges, wagons, cylinders and so on.

At the time, George Stephen Sr. had an inventive mind that was always teeming to experiment with different kinds of metals and making new shapes out of it. Stephen was very fond of grilling and barbecuing and so was his growing family which included 12 children.

In earlier times, the popular design of the grill was the open brazier that worked on charcoal or some other kind of coal. This appliance used a metal tray or mesh to hold the coals in place. The real problem of the grills was that the top half was left open. This meant that the food was left vulnerable to the weather.

Choosing Fuel For The Vent

Frequently different variations of fuel are good for the Weber grill. For example firewood, charcoal, coal bricks. The finest is birch and oak wood and coal. Some species of wood, such as junipers, can work as an additional flavor. Evade spruce and pine wood due to the high substance of resin the smoke may spoil the taste of the cooking meal. Vigilantly use the treated lumber, it may contain the harmful to health substances in the impregnation or the covering.

Weber Grills Made Overseas

On the other hand, the Spirit and Genesis II lines are manufactured in either China or Taiwan.

If buying American-made products is important to you, steer clear of the units in these lineups. If you decide to buy one anyway, be aware that the Genesis line comes with a few extra featuresand a price tag to match.

If you arent sure whether the grill youve purchased was made in the US, check the labeling. The ones that are manufactured at the Huntley facility still carry the Made in the USA stamp. However, most of them include the caveat that some of the components are made in other countries. If theres no stamp, then the grill was made in China.

Weber Grills Made In The Us

Weber Genesis II S

The following grills are made in the USA with globally sourced components: The Original Kettle Charcoal Grill, the high-tech grills in the Summit Series, and the futuristic Q Series units.

If you own a Smokey Joe, a Jumbo Joe, or a Go-Anywhere grill, you may rest assured that these have been manufactured in the US as well.

If its a traditional kettle-style charcoal grill youre after, the Original Kettle is a good bet. Not only is it more affordable than most of the units in Webers lineup, its also user-friendly. The grill is available in several sizes, from 18 to 26 inches. Theres also a Premium version, which offers a sophisticated ash management feature.

The Summit line is made up of both charcoal and gas-powered units. There are a few kamado-style grills in the series as well. As the name suggests, these grills are among the very best that Weber has to offer. The gas grills in this series are particularly appealing, but be forewarned that theyre also fairly expensive.

If youve ever seen a grill in the Q series, theres a good chance that you remember it. The cooking chamber on a Weber Q Series grill has a saucer-shaped design, making it a great conversation starter. These grills are instantly recognizable, even if you dont know what theyre called. Most of them are portable, but the Q3200 is a full-sized model.

The Downside To Outsourcing

Grill: Best Weber Grills (Buying Guide)

While we understand the reasons for outsourcing, the practice has some issues that bear mentioning.

For one thing, the manufacturing standards are often lower due to poor quality control. That means that Webers products might suffer as a result. The company denies that this is a problem for them, particularly since the design process still takes place at corporate headquarters. Still, its an important point for buyers to keep in mind.

On the subject of low standards: We mentioned the fact that the labor laws in the global south are not as stringent as the ones in the US. As a result, the workers may be treated unfairly or even cruelly, depending on the circumstances. This is a human rights issue thats enough to turn many buyers off completely.

Finally, consider the environmental implications. When a company like Weber manufactures its products on foreign shores, it relies on freighters and other forms of mass transportation. This uses up a great deal of energy, which could be harmful to the planet.

Adjusting The Temperature Of The Vent

What will you do if the Weber grill vent settings are too high? Of course, you would want to lower it. But what must you do? Well, lets know some very practical ways.

You should broaden the coals out. As a result, the field which the coal covers now is more significant than before. This unquestionably helps you to lower the warmth. Move the food to the sides of the grill if you need to. By doing this, your food would not be over the coal. As all charcoal grills have a tiny vent to adjust the flow of air in as well as out. You can close this vent to drop the temperature. When the vent remains closed, the air will not flow into the charcoal grill. This trick would help you end the coals from burning.

Now you recognize how to lower the temperature. I would show you what to do when the hotness is low, and you need to bring it up. You must put the coals composed. This will help the heat essences at one point. Therefore, the hotness will increase. As I said before, to lower the temperature, you must close the vent. In case you need to surge the heat, you need to open the vent to allow additional oxygen in so the fire can grow.

Keeping The Vent Open

Do you leave the vent open on a charcoal grill? The answer is yes! The same rule goes for the shacks in the foil. This is a vital step on how to use vents on weber grill. Put tinder wood in the center of the box with firewood. Do not reserve the fuel to preserve the heat for several hours.

If you have not assessed the fuel, and it burned before your leave has over, remove the grill, add wood or charcoal, mix and pause until it burned down. Do not cook the next shares too soon. And do not rush the procedure, pouring any liquid fuel, not planned for grilling. The consequences may be miserable.

The Virtual Weber Gas Grill

Locating the model and serial number of your Weber gas grill can be tricky, especially on older grills that have been out in the weather for years. You may need your model and serial number when registering a gas grill with Weber Customer Service or when trying to order replacement parts from Weber.

On current and recent grills, the model and serial number are printed on a sticker inside the storage cabinet. Sometimes its horizontal, like in this Weber Summit S-670:

And the model and serial number are here:

Sometimes its vertical and part of a collection of stickers, like in this Weber Genesis S-310:

And the model and serial number are here:

On an old grill like the first generation Weber Genesis 2, the model and serial number are on a tiny sticker on the frame on the right side of the control panel:

L3 is the model number and the six digits are the serial number:

Unfortunately, on some models Weber places the model/serial number sticker on the exterior back panel or frame of the grill, where exposure to weather can cause it to fade or peel off. Most recently they did this on the 2017 Genesis II E-310:

And heres the model and serial number:

An interview with Lauren Rullo, sales and marketing manager at Weber Grill Restaurant.

Q: Tell us a little bit about the Weber Grill.

A: Weber Grill Restaurant is a sister company to Weber Stephen Products, producer of Weber Grills. Without George Stephen and his invention of the Weber Grill, the backyard barbecue phenomenon wouldn’t be the same as it is today. George’s invention is part of American History and its immeasurable worldwide growth is a result of the family’s passion and dedication to quality and family values.

George Stephen and his wife Margaret had 12 children, and today, five of his children serve on the board of directors for the Weber Grill Restaurant group. Not only does the family contribute to the company through board membership, but they all contribute to the restaurant’s day to day operations. It is not uncommon to find Jim Stephen in Lombard’s service station or speaking with a guest about their meal. The Stephen family shares the same passion for the Weber Grill now as they did in 1952.

Where Weber Grills Are Born

The Weber Experience – Eric from California

I have personally been on the factory tour about a hundred times in my nearly 20 years at Weber. And yet still, I feel like I learn something each time I am in our factories.

I have watched our little factory in Palatine, Illinois go from one small area that George Stephen Sr. was sure was too much space, to opening another manufacturing plant in 1997 a few miles down the road.

George was an innovator destined to make the perfect steak and he wouldnt settle until the rest of the world also understood that there was a better way to grill. Born in 1952, the Weber grill is a backyard icon that summons feelings of happiness, delicious memories, and family moments that can only be had while gathering around the grill.

In our video you will see first hand how it all began and what goes into making sure you are always a backyard hero.
