What To Look For When Buying A Grill
Many electric grills come with different features based on your cooking needs, so you’ll want to evaluate how you’ll most use your grill. If you want a steak that rivals that cooked on a traditional grill, then look into an electric broiler that can sear your meat to perfection. On the contrary, if you’re looking for a slow cook of large pieces of meat, then a grill with a rotisserie attachment might be right up your alley. Looking for a grill that can do it all? A full-size grill or griddle is the safest and strongest bet for you.
There are a few key specs to pay attention to when searching for the perfect electric grill:
- Wattagethe wattage of your electric grill is going to determine the power it has to reach high heats and how quickly it heats up the entire grill. If you’re looking for a small 1-2 person tabletop grill, a high wattage isn’t necessary, but for a full-size patio grill, then you want some extra power.
- Total cooking areaIf you’re cooking for more than a couple, then a large total cooking area is a must. Look for grills that have a cooking area upwards of 50-75 square inches.
- Highest temperatureMost electric grills will struggle to get as hot as their charcoal and gas counterparts, but there are a few that can take the heat. If you like searing meat on your grill, you’ll want a high temperature to get that crispy exterior and rare interior.
And, with that, consider yourself ready to get your electric grill!
George Foreman Grill & Melt 14525
Perfect cheese on toast thanks to a Foreman-exclusive feature
The 14525 is the only George Foreman to feature a combination of removable plates and a unique grill and melt feature.
In short, this means the lid and top griddle can be locked in place to hover just above what youre cooking, so it gloriously melts whatever you place beneath it. The built-in timer comes into its own once youve perfected your cheese on toast techniques.
The smaller cooking surface might prove a hindrance for families or dinner parties and its low power output means heating up and cooking seem slower than others listed here. For the price, it’s still a decent device.

Dimensions : 17.5 x 16.5 x 4 inches | Cooking Area: 14-inch diameter | Weight: 6 pounds
A high searing temperature of 450 degrees will lock in flavor and an adjustable temperature knob will customize your cooking with this pan-like indoor grill. Your veggies, burgers, and fish will come out deliciously on the 14-inch round grill .
This comes with a large, slightly domed lid to let you cook without splashing grease or oil, and that came in handy during our testing. After a quick set-up, our tester started prepping for a burger dinner. Setting the temperature dial to 400 degrees, it’s questionable if the grill pan got that hot. An infrared thermometer didn’t register the same temperature once the grill’s indicator light went on. Trusting the grill, the burgers went on and when some sputtering happened, the lid prevented a mess. With medium-cooked burgers, the romaine test happened. Set to sear, this performed less well than an outdoor grill. The leaves wilted and tasted great, but there were no sear marks. This all said, our tester enjoyed cooking on this, especially since the lid stopped a greasy mess and smoke in her kitchen.

How Do You Clean An Electric Grill
To clean an electric grill, start by unplugging it and allowing the grates to cool down. If your grill has removable nonstick grates, you can take them off and wash them in your sink with soap and water, the same way you would a piece of cookware. Some electric grills even have dishwasher-safe grates . For grills with cast iron grates, use a wire brush to remove particles as needed, and wash with soap and water, drying thoroughly after.
Each time you use your electric grill, you’ll also want to clean the grease tray and wipe down the exterior as needed.

The Best Indoor Grill Overall: Zojirushi Electric Indoor Grill
Im a big fan of Zojirushi, from my rice cooker to my hot water dispenser, so I had high hopes for this grill, given my very positive history with the brand. It did not disappoint. Of the five grills tested, it got the hottest by far. It left distinguishable grill marks on the chicken and even lightly charred the zucchini, despite having a max temperature of 41F, as per the owners manual. The nearly 160-square-inch cooking surface was one of the largest cooking areas I tested, leaving plenty of room to grill four chicken thighs and two sliced zucchinis. It is also an open grill , which allows grease to gather on a separate drip pan.
Temperature control is done by a dial, which can be set to low, medium, or high, though I couldnt envision a scenario where you wouldnt want to grill on the highest setting. I was especially impressed with how little smoke was produced, given how well it seared the chicken and zucchini. Once the grill was cool, cleanup was a breezeits nonstick, so all the little bits of fond from the chicken just wiped away. This unit is hand-wash only, but washing everythingthe grill, base, and drip traytook only a couple of minutes. While the flavor of the food wasnt what you might expect from an outdoor grill, I would say that this was as close as you can expect to get from an indoor grill. And for about $110 at the time of publication, thats a pretty good deal.
Best Overall: Cuisinart Gr
Drip trays and grates are removable for easy clean up
Sealing lid prevents unwanted splattering
Struggles with even heat distribution according to some reviews
This 5-in-1 griddler is a top of the line appliance that functions not only as a compact, indoor grill but also a griddle and panini press. The reversible plates offer five major functions including a contact grill, panini press, full grill, full griddle, and half grill, half griddle, which gives you the option to whip up anything from burgers to sandwiches to eggs to bacon to pancakes. Simply adjust the dial to opt for “griddle” for flat-lay cooking or “grill/panini” for closed-top cooking. Once youve selected the cooking surface, you can easily adjust the left and right dials to control the temperature.
One feature that our tester noted as a huge plus was that its super nonstick, too. When burned-on cheese dribbled onto the grates during testing, it slid off easily, making cleanup a dream. The removable plates are easy to wash by hand or in the dishwasher. While the grill is cooking, grease is being drained into a convenient drip tray that’s similarly removal and simple to clean. In fact, this tray is hidden which makes for a more appealing look, as well.
