Are Infrared Grills Better Than Regular Gas Grills
You know, this is a tricky question to answer. The truth is that while infrared grills have many advantages, they also have several disadvantages too
The pros are as follows. They provide a uniform distribution of heat, theres reduced flare-ups, they heat up quickly, theyre great for the outdoors, unaffected by wind, and theyre also one of the safest ways to cook.
But on the other hand, there are the cons. The top quality grills are rarely available at a good price point. And while infrared grills are often great for grilling meats, it can be a little too easy to burn veggies on an infrared grill.

How Does Infrared Grilling Work
The main feature that separates infrared grills from other types is the panel that sits underneath the grates of the grill. This panel is often constructed from ceramic tiles or certain types of metal.
This panel performs two main functions. One is to help reduce severe fluctuations in temperature across the grills surface by protecting the main cooking area from direct exposure to flames. The other function is to distribute heat more evenly across the grill.
So rather than produce the convective air flow that we normally see with traditional charcoal or gas grilling, the panel absorbs heat from the burners and then emits it in the form of radiant heat.
This is very different to traditional grilling, but is a far better means of reducing the risk of flare-ups and cold spots, and is also a far more efficient use of fuel.
This also has another key benefit: Your meat is far less likely to dry out. Cooking it with radiant heat allows you to cook at far steadier temperatures, which helps your food retain a lot of its natural juices and moisture.
Of all the different types of infrared burners, ceramic is your best bet for achieving higher grill temperatures .
Are Char Broil Infrared Grills Good
This grill does a good job. Because its infrared, the cooking experience is not the same as a conventional gas BBQ. I think thats because the flame has zero chance of getting close to the meat. The downside is if you like a heavier BBQ flavor and a little char on your food, thats a little less likely.

Which Series To Buy
Based on my personal observations and reading through hundreds of user reviews, the Performance series under-performs the Signature/Commercial series due to the one-piece emitter/grate design. Although its tough to expect much from a gas grill under $200, the question remains: Is the Char-Broil TRU-infrared performance series the best gas grill under $200? The answer is no, a standard convection grill may serve you better. For just $200 the best gas grill is going to light, heat relatively evenly, and last a couple of years. TRU-infrared isnt going to add any value at this price point. Finding the best gas grill under $200 isnt difficult if you know what to look for. Should You Buy An Infrared Grill
Infrared grills burn hot, sear better than any other type of grill and brown your meat evenly.
However they can be a bit of a one trick pony when it comes to grilling and that trick is searing.
While you are most likely to see infrared technology in the form of a sear zone on a grill, you can get barbecues which use this technology in the cooking chamber as well, and this opens up a whole new area in which infrared technology is an appealing option.
If your burner has an infrared plate in the cooking chamber, the heat coming up from the coals is converted into infrared radiation.
This means that your food is being cooked by convection conduction AND infrared radiation .
In short, every last bit of that heat is going to be used up to cook your meat evenly and efficiently.
Compare that to a normal cooking chamber. Your food is cooked by convection and conduction only.
So yes, your food will still be cooked if you have a normal grill, and it will still be mighty tasty. But infrared cooking does have an edge.
But infrared grills cost more. Weve included the best budget infrared grill as well as some great more expensive options.
So while there are many advantages to owning an infrared grill, you need to consider your budget too.
Best And Worst Infrared Gas Grill Designs
To give you an idea of whats out there and what the various designs cost, Ill cover a few of the more popular ones, in a wide range of prices so you really get a sense of context. Most folks have a sense of the difference between a Viking range and a Kenmore whereas the difference between a Char-Broil and a TEC might not be so clear to most folks.
Weve all seen the Char-Broil brand wherever we see grills and yet TEC is not a brand many folks have heard of. Indeed most folks equate Char-Broils TRU infrared with the technology itself. So lets do a comparison and cover some things to watch out for when shopping for an infrared gas grill.

Tru Infrared Cooking System
The Char-Broil TRU-Infrared cooking system allows the grill user to cook their food evenly and with greater temperature control, using infrared technology. The Infrared heat helps prevent hot and cold spots on the grill’s cooking surface and facilitates faster cooking with the use of less gas.
The special cooking grate at the core of TRU-Infrared technology spreads heat evenly across the grill top. And because it creates a barrier between food and flames, flare-ups are history. End result- juicier and more flavorful food every time.
Material Of The Grate
If you have read any of my other reviews you will know that I am a big fan of the porcelain coated grill grates. They are easy to clean and are rust-resistant, not rust-free. They will still rust if you do not take care of them, but not as fast as any of the other materials. Both the grates, the main grate, and the warming rack, are porcelain coated and that is something you do not see to much. Most of the time the warming rack is made out of a cheaper material.

What Is An Infrared Grill
Infrared grills differ from their standard charcoal or gas counterparts due to the fact that they heat up their food by radiation.
Where charcoal and gas models use hot air flow or convection heat to cook food, infrareds dont rely on this airflow. Instead, they contain a glass or metal plate that absorbs heat from its burners, which in turn then radiates it towards the food.
The Overall Quality Of The Material
The opinions about the quality of the used materials are divided. Some mention it to be cheap and flimsy and other people are calling it great sturdy quality.
After reading more I can only come to the conclusion that the more experienced grillers are a little more critical about the grill quality and what I can call first-time buyers are more satisfied with it.

Is An Infrared Grill Worth The Price
The jury is still out on this. Though IR grills are known for being status symbols, excellent at searing food, and rapid heating, they have issues. Due to the high risk of burning food and the ultra-high temperatures they can reach, many home chefs find these grills to be too specialized for their tastes.
With that said, much of the IR grill fandom is about very specific cooking styles. If you tend to cook a lot of seared steaks or just prefer mostly resilient meats, this could be a good investment. People who tend to love wood-fired flavors or who want to try a wide range of different cooking methods, on the other hand, wont want one.

Overall Ratings For The Char Broil 450 3 Burner
The 4.3-star rating we gave it is after reading many reviews and comparing them to see if we could find some problems that came back all the time.
About 75 percent of the ratings we found on several sites are in the 4 and 5 stars. 3 stars were given in about 20% of the cases. The lower ratings were sometimes in my opinion minor complaints and not really a reason to give it 2 stars.
Receiving a damaged grill is no fun, but has nothing to do with the quality of the grill and should in my opinion not be a reason to give a one-star rating. Just send it back, although I totally understand how disappointed you are.
Pros: Infrared Grills Cook Food Quickly
Because of their mega-high temperatures, infrared grills cook very, very fast. And for some types of grilling, that happens to be exactly what you want. The most notable example of this is steak.
The key to cooking a steak is cooking as quickly as possible over as high a heat as possible. The hotter and quicker, the better. The reason being that steaks get tougher the longer they spend over the heat. Your goal with cooking one, then, is to sear the outside and produce a flavorful brown crust while ensuring that the interior remains tender and juicy.
And an infrared grill with its cooking temperature approaching 1,000 F happens to be perfect for that. It might only take a minute on each side and even less for thin cuts like skirt steak.
Another advantage to infrared grills is that they aren’t prone to flare-ups since anything that drips from the food is instantly vaporized when it hits the glass or ceramic.

Our New Gas Grill: Char
Last week I shared with you that we had went to Sears to look for a new grill, as part of the free photography class I am taking sponsored by Sears Grilling. We did lots of comparisons and walked away fairly certain about the one we would buy.
During the week, I was sent a gift card to go buy our new grill. After we got back from our trip to Comic-Con, we headed back over to Sears go buy the gas grill we wanted, but after getting there, we found that it was out of stock. The sales associate checked the inventory at all the other local Las Vegas Sears stores and it was out of stock at those stores too. It must have been quite popular!
So, a change of plans. We checked the other options and decided wed go with something different. Very different. My husband had a major interest in the Char-Broil TRU-Infrared gas grills, so after a look at the different models with this new cooking system, we made our decision.
This week our class focused on taking better product photos with a big focus on our lighting. Well, I hope youre ready because Ive got lots to show you!
Heres a close up of the grates. Quite different, huh?
Many gas grills have a single lid mounted temperature gauge, but our new grill has several. There is one located directly above each knob that is used to show the temperature of each grate.
This is designed to give us precise control and monitoring of the food cooking.
And so far, we have been.
If this was your grill, what would you grill first??

A Great Alternative To Infrared
If you like the sound of super hot searing but arent sure if you are ready to invest the money in infrared, then there is a great alternative that you might like to consider.
GrillGrates is a brand that produces a product of the same name that also amplifies heat, prevents flare ups, stops food falling between the grates, and sears your steaks really well.
While GrillGrates are not infrared, they will cost you a lot less than a grill with an infrared burner. In fact, all you need to do is purchase the right size grates, remove your current grates and replace them with the GrillGrates.
Or if you like, you can simply sit them on top of your current grill grates.
GrillGrates are made of high quality aluminium. They are interlocking plates that have five raised rails that your food actually comes in contact with. There are also holes along the grates that allow smoke and gases to escape.
You can see GrillGrates in action in the video below.
The idea behind the design is that the plates take up the heat from the fire. The heat is evenly spread throughout the grates and up into the rails.
The fact that the valleys between the rails gets super heated and sit so close to the cooking surface means that these grates end up cooking the food in a similar way to an infrared burner.
GrillGrates state that when placed in a gas grill, these grates can amplify the temperature by up to 200°F.
