A quick tour of the Saber’s excellent set up. Far left has the IR emitter and grate off to show one of the burner compartments. Middle is the infrared emitter which is the work horse – preventing flare ups and creating even, infrared heat. On the right is the full grate and emitter in place. |
Closer look a one of the 3 burner compartments. Notice that it is completely sealed off from the others. This gives exceptional heat control for cooking at different temperature zones. The short silver stem at the middle bottom of the picture is the temperature gauge probe. |
Just to show how well the compartmentalized burners do at zone temperature control, here are readings from the left burner on high and the right burner off – a 600 degree difference! Don’t try this at home but during our demo, I showed guests how I can have the left and middle burners on medium high and still put my hand briefly on the far right burner. Again…don’t do this at home. |

Gas Or Charcoalhow Do You Choose
In the eternal debate over whether a gas grill or a charcoal grill is better for outdoor cooking, there is no wrong answer. If youre cooking your food on the grill instead of inside the house, it will capture that beautiful charred essence and smoky flavor from cooking over open flames. You likely already have strong opinions on the topic of gas versus charcoal and were not here to change your mind. If youre still on the fence on the subject, however, here are the pros and cons of using each type of grill to help you choose the right one for you. Lets talk gas grills, first.
Gas grills are more convenient than charcoal grills. That they dont use charcoal as fuel not only makes a gas grill easier to clean , but it also cuts down its initial heating time. That gas grills come equipped with electric starters or a spark wheel to ignite its gas burner helps to get you cooking faster than charcoal users can manage, as well. Its easy to easier to control the heat while youre grilling with gas than it is when using charcoal to adjust the heat up and down, simply twist a knob instead of fiddling around with hot coals. It is a bummer when you run out of propane, though, so we love these newer grills that have a handy meter right on the side of the grill.

What You Can Do
First, stop using your Saber grill. Then check to see if you own one of the recalled grills or the replacement regulators by checking the model number of your grill and regulator.
To find the model number of the grill, look on the underside of the grease tray below the burners, which may be gunked up from a summer of use. Then compare it to the full list of model numbers on the CPSCs recall notice .As for the regulator, youre looking for Model RA329 with a date code between 1120 to 1344. The model number is located at the center of the regulator and the date code is stamped on the regulator next to where it connects to the gas tank .The grills were made in China and sold from September 2011 to May 2017 at such specialty outdoor living stores as Family Leisure, Fortunoff Backyard Store, and Watsons, as well as through authorized websites and catalogs including Bed, Bath & Beyond and Frontgate. The grills cost between $800 and $2,000 and the LP conversion kits cost from $90 to $105.
Saber is offering owners a free repair kit that you can order on its website or by calling 866-671-7988. But its not quite so simple. There are two types of replacement kits, so before you contact Saber, you should conduct a test on your grill to see if you need a hose, valve and regulator kit, or just a hose and regulator kit.The instruction’s on Sabers website walk you through the process, and for safetys sake you should follow them to the letter.
Recall Includes More Than 20000 Grills Faulty Part Poses Fire And Burn Hazards
Grilling season is drawing to a close in many parts of the country, but if you own a Saber gas grill, dont put it away until you check whether its one of the more than 20,000 grills the company has recalled.
The problem is faulty propane regulators, some of which came with new grills and some of which were installed as replacement parts. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received 35 reports of malfunctioning regulators on Saber grills, including three reports of singed arms and two reports of burned or singed hair.A propane regulator, also called an LP regulator, is one of the most important parts of the grill because it controls the flow of gas from the tank to the burners. Its main job is to step down the high pressure of the gas in the tank before it flows to the grill. When it doesn’t work, you end up with gas leaks and fires and burn hazards, and that’s exactly what happened with the recalled grills. Of the recalled grills, Consumer Reports tested three:
the four-burner Saber R67SC0012, $1,900
Our test engineers did not experience problems with the Saber regulators, but the grills werent particually good performers either.
All of the Sabers scored in the bottom tier of the ratings, says CR test engineer Cindy Fisher, who oversees our gas grill tests.

Why Buy Gas Grills Manufactured Inthe Usa From Bbq Depot
At BBQ Depot, we feel there are severalreasons to buy grills made in America. Heres a few of our favorite reasons:
1. It supports our economy on a national andlocal scale.
2. It provides job security for Americans.
3. Manufacturing standards on gas productsmade in the USA are subject to stringent regulations and laws that areregularly enforced. Not every country shares these same standards. Buying anAmerican-made gas grill from the BBQ Depot can give you peace of mind that yourgrill has been made and inspected to be up to par with the latest laws andguidelines.
4. Buying grills made in America gives youeasier access to service, warranty, and replacement parts. Is there anythingmore frustrating than not being able to purchase a replacement part? Not onlydo we sell American-made grills, but we sell the American-made replacementparts that go along with them. No more wasting hours and hours searching the Internet trying to find the rightpart, only to find out it doesnt exist anymore. Just head to our website or giveus a call and well help you find it.
5. The quality of manufacturing is higher. When a product is designed and manufactured in the United States, the entireconstruction pipeline can be monitored closely. This means fewer defects and abetter overall product.

The Downside To Outsourcing
While we understand the reasons for outsourcing, the practice has some issues that bear mentioning.
For one thing, the manufacturing standards are often lower due to poor quality control. That means that Webers products might suffer as a result. The company denies that this is a problem for them, particularly since the design process still takes place at corporate headquarters. Still, its an important point for buyers to keep in mind.
On the subject of low standards: We mentioned the fact that the labor laws in the global south are not as stringent as the ones in the US. As a result, the workers may be treated unfairly or even cruelly, depending on the circumstances. This is a human rights issue thats enough to turn many buyers off completely.
Finally, consider the environmental implications. When a company like Weber manufactures its products on foreign shores, it relies on freighters and other forms of mass transportation. This uses up a great deal of energy, which could be harmful to the planet.

Where Are Weber Grills Made
The Weber Grills are headquartered in the United States. The Headquarters of the company are in Palatine, Illinois. This long-run family business historically manufactured grills and their accessories in the United States. However, ever since the BDT contract in 2010, the question on everyoneâs mind is: are the products still manufactured in the United States or not?
Even though the Weber Grills are headquartered in the United States and their primary functioning is carried out in Illinois, their products are not entirely made in the United States. This is because many of the parts that go into making the grills are imported from other countries that go into making the grills.
In fact, the Weber Grills have even faced court action and trial back in 2012 when they claimed to have made their products in the USA. The âmade in the USAâ stamp on their products was under fire as their grill components are imported from other countries and the consumers felt misled.
The newer Weber models are made in China as the parts are made there and then imported to be assembled in the USA with the rest of the parts. Even their labels now read âMade in the United States of America with some globally sourced parts and components.â While some other products are completely made in China or some are completely built using globally sourced components.
Saber 500 Cast Black Grill Review
By: Max Good
The Saber Cast 500 is an entry level model to the Saber line of gas grills. One could compare it to Webers Genesis II LX grills in quality and price, although unlike Genesis II, Saber is a searing machine. This 3-burner cooker has some unique features based on patented infrared designs developed by Sabers parent company, Char-Broil. But Sabers are much more sophisticated and much higher quality than anything that bears the Char-Broil name.
The firebox is designed to cradle each burner with individual compartments for complete isolation and optimal zone cooking. Below is an illustration of one burner system. On this model there are three burner systems. There are no heat tents or flavor bars covering the burners. The 304 stainless grate system has a unique, patented design meant to promote uniform radiant heat and move convection heat away from the cooking grate. Convection heat is hot circulating air that can rob food of moisture. The grate/emitter system has ridges that conform to the bottom of the grates. Rather than cast metal or steel rods, the grates are half-tubes of stainless steel that fit onto these ridges and create a series of hot air tunnels. A row of slots at the peak of each ridge delivers heat from the burners below into this tunnel. The heat then naturally escapes by moving out of the tunnel and dissipates through vents at the cooking area perimeter.

Saber Grills Recalls Grills And Lp Regulators Due To Fire And Burn Hazards
- Recalled Saber Grill & location of grease tray
- Label on underside of grease tray
- Location of regulator connected to propane tank
- Location of date code and model number
The grills LP regulator can allow gas to flow at a higher pressure than intended, which can result in a gas leak and flame burst from the burner knobs, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Who Owns The Weber Grills
Weber Grills is a privately-owned company that focuses on making charcoal, electric and gas grills. The company also manufactures some related accessories that consumers buy in order to make their experience more enriching.
Weber is owned by the Weber-Stephen Products LLC. This is a privately-owned manufacturer who also owns some assets of Ducane Products. In a bankruptcy sale in 2004, Weber Grills successfully bought some of the assets of its competitor, Ducane Products Co.
Weber was a business owned by the family of Stephen George Sr. This family business successfully ran its operations for decades until they sold their controlling stake. This had to be done because Weber Grills was losing some international market due to the rise in competition. They sold the controlling stake to BDT. The BDT owns some part of the company but the majority control still lies with the original owners.
The 2010 BDT acquisition did not include the restaurant operations. This is why even today the restaurants are owned by the family of Stephen Georgeâs family. Even though the brand name did not change, the two firms have drifted apart. The company owned by BDT manufactures and deals with outdoor grills while the other company focuses on restaurants and their operations.
Are All Imported Grills Bad
Does this mean all imported grills are bad? Notnecessarily. But as mentioned earlier, they are not held to the same standardsthat American-made grills are held to. You can feel the quality difference.
BBQ Depot does sell some imported brandsincluding Summerset and Blaze. This is because these brands have shown product support. It may take months andmonths for parts, but eventually those parts become available. With that being said, there are definitely quality issues as well asmanufacturing choices that can end up turning into a headache for the consumer. For example, these grills use flame thrower valves. If you need to replaceyour ignition electrode, you will have to replace the entire valve. Thiscreates a large expense for an inexpensive part. Since the electrode is builtinto the valve, there is not a replacement for it.
There is much that could be said about eachindividual brand that imports their grills. Since a large part of our businessinvolves service and selling replacement parts, we are frequently put in thedifficult position of explaining to customers why there is no product supportfor their grills.
Because of this, we have had to make thedifficult choice of not displaying imported grills in our showroom. When wedisplay a grill and a customer purchases that grill, they hold us accountablefor the quality of the product. Due to the many inconsistencies, we had noalternative but to display products we can stand behind, like our American-madegrills.
