Where Are Memphis Grills Made

Where Is The Wifi Integration

Is This The Best Built In Pellet Grill? | Memphis Grills Pro Pellet Grill Review

While I definitely think the 304 stainless steel construction and very competitive price point of the Coyote pellet grills means anyone with the budget should consider one, there is a rather odd omission. Coyote has released a luxury pellet grill with a touch screen tablet interface, but no WiFi/App integration?! On lower specification grills WiFi/App features such as Traegers WiFire and Camp Chef Connect have become extremely popular. Furthermore, all Memphis and Twin Eagles pellet grills have WiFi/App integration. Twin Eagles WiFi/App implementation is particularly impressive, with the same interface present on the pellet grill and on your phone. If you only ever use your grill for burgers/steaks etc then WiFi remote monitoring of your grill may not be a feature you would use much if at all. However, if you want to do low and slow cooking and smoking, what pellet grills are mainly known for thats where WiFi remoting monitoring and control really shines.

Direct Flame Broiling Capabilities

Each of the Memphis pellet grills provides for the option of direct flame broiling. For instance, you may have been slow cooking burgers/steaks etc to provide then with as much flavour as possible from the wood pellets. However, to finish them off you might want to sear/caramelise the surface and give them that classic grilled appearance. Within the centre of the flavourizer , there is a removable easy access insert positioned above the firepot. Well, the easy access insert can be replaced with the direct flame insert. Now, there is a specific procedure that Memphis grills recommend when using the direct flame insert shown in the video below.

How To Choose The Best Memphis Grill

If youre a first-time buyer, our reviews of pellet grills above may be too overwhelming. What you need to figure out first is your needs, so you dont end up buying something too much or too little.

Here, we discuss all the factors you need to consider before finally deciding on the one model you should buy. Alternatively, you can also read our comparison of the top grills manufacturers of grills, such as SmokinTex and Cookshack.

Cookshack/fast Eddy Pellet Grills/smokers

Ive previously written a full article on the Cookshack pellet grill range, so please check that out that article for the full details. Here Ill just quickly run through a few details about the company and their products. Cookshack is based in Ponca City, Oklahoma and they have been producing electric smokers since the 1960s. Then in collaboration with BBQ expert and Pit Master Fast Eddy they developed their range of residential and commercial pellet grills/smokers. Their smallest unit is the PG500 seen at the top of this post, their other residential pellet grill is the PG1000 which is a more conventional design and features an insulated construction.

The PB1000 is one of two residential pellet grills/smokers made in the USA by Cookshack: Image BBQGuys.com

All Cookshack pellet grill/smokers are made from stainless steel. They feature a 4 cooking zone design. The first area is the hottest cooking area directly over the pellet fire where direct flame broiling is possible. The heat/smoke is then carried up to the upper rack which is the second cooking area before it is pulled down over the second grate which is the third cooking area. Below that is the fourth cooking area in a draw. Frequently used as an area to keep cooked food warm it can also be used as a cold smoker.

Higher Cooking/searing Temperatures Than Other Pellet Grills

Memphis Elite

As Ive stated above with a luxury pellet you would expect and should expect there to be features available that are just not found on lower specification pellet grills/smokers. Well, with the Memphis pellet grills they can reach high temperatures that most other pellet grills on the market today could only dream of. As I briefly referenced above, the Memphis elite can reach 700 degrees. Most premium pellet grills can only reach a maximum of 500 degrees. However, there are some differences between the Memphis pellet grills in terms of their maximum temperature capabilities.

  • Memphis 26 Beale Street Pellet Grill Maximum Temperature = 550 degrees
  • Memphis 28 Pro Pellet Grill Maximum Temperature = 650 degrees
  • Memphis 39 Elite Pellet Grill Maximum Temperature = 700 degrees

While the Beale Street and Pro models do have lower maximum temperature settings compared to the Elite they are lower-priced units. While the Pro features a dual convection fan as does the Elite the Beale Street just features a single convection fan, hence the lower maximum temperature the fire can achieve. However, the Beale Street at 550 degrees still achieves a higher cooking temperature than any premium class pellet grill currently on the market.

Assembling The Memphis Pro

When compared to many of the cart grill models that we build here at the Lab, there really isnt much to assembling a Memphis Grill built in. You start by attaching the controller bracket to your kitchen countertop support, inserting the controller into the bracket, connecting the controller to the grill, and then screwing in the stainless steel wings on the back and sides of the unit. The Pro comes with detailed instructions that are actually easy to understand, and we really appreciate it when instructions make sense. Memphis Wood Fire Grills did a good job here.

How A Memphis Pellet Grill Works

Again, if you have read any of my previous posts youll be familiar with the basic process of how pellet grills in general operate. A pellet hopper feeds an auger which feeds the firepot. A control panel instructs the auger and combustion fan to achieve and maintain a set temperature using data from an internal temperature probe. While that basic process is true of all pellet grills how accurately that process is controlled depends on a lot of factors. For instance, how advanced the control panel is etc. With a luxury pellet grill brand such as Memphis, you would expect their implementation of the pellet combustion process to be best there is, and it is.

Memphis use Intelligent Temperature Control to precisely control the speed of the auger and fan to achieve and maintain set temperatures. Other lower specification pellet grills are now using PID controllers to help provide more accurate temperature control. Furthermore, Traeger with D2 Direct Drive has dramatically improved the quality and power of their interior components. However, the larger fans with heavy-duty motors and full stainless steel construction found on Memphis grills is a step up over other pellet grills.

Memphis Pro Built In Grill – 2018

If you dont have the space for a large grill or you just dont need to serve that many people, this compact Memphis Pro pellet grill is one that doesnt disappoint.

Even at 28 inches, this grill is still made of 304 stainless steel. The 304-grade construction is durable and stronger than the 430 grade, but more on this later.

The 18 lb. dual pellet hopper is a great feature. It allows you to mix and match flavors as you like, letting you experiment and achieve the perfect taste for whatever is on the menu. And with an expandable 562-square inch cooking area, you can still serve family and friends with ease.

In our cooking sessions with this grill, we found that it does an incredible job of circulating and maintaining the heat. The dual convection fans work effectively for heat circulation, and the double-walled hood traps it all in.;

On the whole, this pro pellet grill is a small but high-performing model that meets our expectations.

Pros:

  • Dual convection fans for heat circulation

The Benefits Of 304 Stainless Steel Construction

I believe most people are aware that stainless steel is a more durable/corrosion-resistant material compared to painted mild-steel found on most pellet grills. However, what I dont think that many people appreciate are the different grades of stainless steel used by different manufacturers and the implications of using certain grades. For instance, some pellet grills are made from 201-grade stainless steel, others from 430 stainless steel and in the case of the Coyote pellet grills 304 stainless steel is used. Are you aware of what the differences are and why you ideally want a grill made from 304 stainless steel? If not, the video below explains more.

The video explains why if you can afford it you want a luxury pellet grill made from 304 stainless steel: Video BBQGuys.com

The Nickel content in 304-grade stainless steel provides for increased corrosion resistance and is recommended for all climates, even salty coastal air. However, 304 is also one of the most expensive grades of stainless steel. Hence, this is why the 304 stainless steel construction of the Coyote pellet grills is their best feature. As a Coyote pellet grill is currently by far the cheapest 304 stainless steel grill you can buy.

Can I Store My Bbq Pellets Outside Or Under My Memphis Grill

The pellets are made of 100% natural hardwood, once compressed and dried they have a moisture content of 5%-10% and will hold their form without glues or binders. If the pellets are exposed to excessive moisture or humidity they may lose their form and cause the grill to have longer ignition times and the pellets will burn inefficiently. It is also not recommended to store the pellets close to a heat source as the bag may melt and expose the pellets to moisture. We recommend keeping your pellets in a cool dry location and preferably in a sealed container.

Control Panels & Connectivity

Memphis Grills Elite Wi

Both Memphis and Coyote fit control panels using PID technology for accurate temperature control within 5 degrees of the set temperature. Memphis describes their control panel as an ITC , but basically its use a PID algorithm like most new pellet grills released today including the Coyote range. In terms of features like meat probes, all Memphis and Coyote pellet grills referenced above can monitor 3 separate cuts of meat. In terms of the control panel interface its self, Coyote provides a nice larger central control panel which I think is much easier to read than the Memphis control panels, though there is a notable difference between them.

In terms of ease of use, I do think the Coyote control panel is superior to the Memphis panels. However, there is a rather odd missing function: Image BBQGuys.com

Ive been following the development of pellet grills since 2007 when I first got involved in the pellet business. Since then, Ive seen WiFi integration go from a niche/novelty feature to mainstream adoption with Traeger WiFire. Memphis have been including WiFi/App functionality into their pellet grill range for many years now.

While I dont think Memphis WiFi/App functionality is currently the best in the business, it is a feature not currently found on the Coyote pellet grills: Image BBQGuys.com

Why Buy Gas Grills Manufactured Inthe Usa From Bbq Depot

At BBQ Depot, we feel there are severalreasons to buy grills made in America. Heres a few of our favorite reasons:

1. It supports our economy on a national andlocal scale.

2. It provides job security for Americans.

3. Manufacturing standards on gas productsmade in the USA are subject to stringent regulations and laws that areregularly enforced. Not every country shares these same standards. We have seen countless numbers of imported gas products that are manufacturedto standards that are so low they are considered unlawful in the USA. Buying anAmerican-made gas grill from the BBQ Depot can give you peace of mind that yourgrill has been made and inspected to be up to par with the latest laws andguidelines.

4. Buying grills made in America gives youeasier access to service, warranty, and replacement parts. Is there anythingmore frustrating than not being able to purchase a replacement part? Not onlydo we sell American-made grills, but we sell the American-made replacementparts that go along with them. No more wasting hours and hours searching the Internet trying to find the rightpart, only to find out it doesnt exist anymore. Just head to our website or giveus a call and well help you find it.

5. The quality of manufacturing is higher. When a product is designed and manufactured in the United States, the entireconstruction pipeline can be monitored closely. This means fewer defects and abetter overall product.

Introduction To Coyote Wood Pellet Grills/smokers

Coyote Outdoor Living which is the full company name is based in Dallas, Texas, USA and was started in 2011. Coyote has previously been focused on producing high-end stainless steel outdoor gas and charcoal grills. Coyote does produce portable grills however their main focus is backyard cooking and outdoor kitchen setups. They have now released their own range of wood pellet grills/smokers to compete in the luxury segment available in the following sizes:

  • 28 Freestanding or Built-In Wood Pellet Grill
  • 36 Freestanding or Built-In Wood Pellet Grill

Both sizes of grills include the same features and capabilities. Therefore the promotional video below on the Coyote 36 built-in wood pellet grill is representative of all Coyote pellet grill models.

Quick promotional video highlighting the features of the Coyote pellet grill range.

If you have previously read my post on Twin Eagles pellet grill range you will notice the Coyote pellet grills have a rather striking resemblance. Not only with their size and stainless steel construction. The front-loading hopper with sliding shelf lid is almost identical. Furthermore, the position, size and interface on the Coyote pellet grills appear very similar to that found on Twin Eagles pellet grills. However, they are not the same, and Ill discuss that more below. Its clear that Coyote is trying to offer a pellet grill with similar features/capabilities to a Twin Eagles pellet grill at a significantly lower price point.

Are All Imported Grills Bad

Louisiana Style Jambalaya Made on The Memphis Wood Fire Grill

Does this mean all imported grills are bad? Notnecessarily. But as mentioned earlier, they are not held to the same standardsthat American-made grills are held to. You can feel the quality difference.

BBQ Depot does sell some imported brandsincluding Summerset and Blaze. This is because these brands have shown product support. It may take months andmonths for parts, but eventually those parts become available. With that being said, there are definitely quality issues as well asmanufacturing choices that can end up turning into a headache for the consumer. For example, these grills use flame thrower valves. If you need to replaceyour ignition electrode, you will have to replace the entire valve. Thiscreates a large expense for an inexpensive part. Since the electrode is builtinto the valve, there is not a replacement for it.

There is much that could be said about eachindividual brand that imports their grills. Since a large part of our businessinvolves service and selling replacement parts, we are frequently put in thedifficult position of explaining to customers why there is no product supportfor their grills.

Because of this, we have had to make thedifficult choice of not displaying imported grills in our showroom. When wedisplay a grill and a customer purchases that grill, they hold us accountablefor the quality of the product. Due to the many inconsistencies, we had noalternative but to display products we can stand behind, like our American-madegrills.

Heres Why You Should Avoidimported Grills

1. Manufacturing, environmental and laborstandards. Companies building grills in the United States are subject tostringent regulations. This means that if your grill is built in the US, itslikely to be built by people who have been compensated fairly. Likewise, theenvironment likely wasnt harmed in its creation.

2. The frustration of not having access toparts such as grease trays, valves, manifolds, knobs, wheels, and bodyparts. These are just some of the parts you may not be able to replace. Many ofthe parts are only available on the aftermarket . Remember when you import products, you are subject to minimum quantity orders. When you have dozens of models using the same burners and heat shields, meetingthat MOQ is easier than other replacement parts thatare specific to model sizes.

3. There is no commitment to manufacturingequipment. When manufacturing is subcontracted, you are relying on thecontractor to stay in business and have quality and consistent manufacturing. Often, if they change equipment, the engineering of your grill model willchange thus making replacement parts obsolete. Then, when you need areplacement part, it no longer exists.

At that point, what are the replacementoptions? Often there is no replacement. Modification of the outdoor kitchen andcountertop becomes necessary, creating a huge expense. This situation rarelyoccurs in a US-manufactured grill, as we sell at the BBQ Depot.
