The Camp Chef Propane Sear Box

Before the Sear Box came long you would have to have a separate propane grill along with your pellet BBQ or take the food in and out of the house separately to sear in the flavour. However, with the Sear Box, you have an additional 180 square inches of cooking space and 16,000 BTUs of heat from the propane burner at temperatures up to 900 degrees.

The Sear Box features a heat deflector over the propane flames, then an infrared screen and on top of that is a raised rib cast iron grate. There is also an easy to remove grease drip tray underneath the Sear Box made of the same stainless steel as the body of the Sear Box.

A handy propane tank holder is provided within the kit which you attach to your pellet grill. In the video above how to install the Sear Box onto the pellet grill is briefly covered. However, the video below shows the process in a lot more detail.

Question:Is this set up for Natural Gas or Propane? Is there a conversion kit for Natural Gas? I know on my BBQ Grill I had to change my burners over when I went from Propane to NG.ThanksWas This Helpful?Answer:Hi Mike. This Sidekick burner is set up for propane. Camp Chef does make a conversion kit, though they do require some manual modifications on the user’s end.

Should You Buy The Camp Chef Woodwind

Yes, the temp accuracy of the grill is a bit off and the temp variation can be high from one side of the grill to the other, but the more pellet grills I test, the more I am seeing similar results.

I cooked chicken quarters, wings, chuck roast, Boston Butt, New York Strips, pork chops, and cheeseburgers without overcooking or drying anything out. Everything turned out juicy with a nice smoky flavor.

If you are looking for a pellet grill/smoker that is easy to use, easy to clean and maintain, and is going to last for years then you should give this grill a hard look.

Youll be able to cook great food with minimal effort with the base model.

The Woodwind really comes into its own when you combine it with the SideKick attachment

Camp Chef offers a large range of accessories and options for the Woodwind line.

If the temperature accuracy and variance concern you greatly, I would look toward a different option.

Design And Build Quality

The general build quality of the main smoking body and legs is very good. Its made from high quality metals with a nice paint finish. These smokers have been proven to last for years and thats not surprising when you look at the general quality of the build. The only thing about the build quality that isnt brilliant is how it reacts to adverse weather conditions. When the wind is strong or theres heavy rain it can struggle to reach the higher temperatures, but a simple wind break or cover can sort that problem out.

Our favorite aspects of the SmokePro DLX are the innovative design features that Camp Chef have added to make cooking on this smoke as good of an experience as possible. The first is the built in temperature probe. If youve read around on King of the Coals, youll know that we are huge advocates of using digital thermometers when grilling or smoking, and to have a quality digital thermometer built into the smoker is a great feature. Wed still probably recommend using another one to get additional temperature readings, but this is a great feature to have built in. Another feature we love is the power failure restart. If the power is cut off during a cook, it will restart itself so you dont have the huge disappointment of waking up in the morning to a half cooked brisket.

Don’t Miss: Which Weber Grill Is Right For Me

Setup: Simple Build And Standard Seasoning

Like most large standalone pellet smokers, the SmokePro DLX requires a bit of assembly. Upon unboxing all the pieces and parts, it seemed like an intimidating build, but we soon found its, arguably, easier than putting together the average piece of furniture from IKEA.

Included tools meant we technically didnt even need to own any to complete the project, but we did save a bit of time and hassle with a socket wrench set. After attaching the legs, handles, and the hopper/burner assembly, we basically just needed to place the remaining components inside the barrel.

Following the manuals instructions, we performed an initial Feed to get pellets into the auger and firebox. The process was straightforward but required a few button combinations and holds that werent obvious from looking at the buttons and dials. Next, we followed up with seasoning, grilling at high heat for around 45 minutes to burn off any manufacturing residue, and then we prepared the grill for smoking meat.

Performance: Tighter Control For Smoking Precision

Camp Chef claims its more advanced controller unit keeps temperatures within 5 degrees of the set temperature, and thankfully, this smoker delivers on that promise. Traditionally, backyard chefs had to accept that their smokers would fluctuate as much as 60 degrees above or below the desired temperature. These swings arent as critical when dealing with more forgiving projects such as a pulled pork roast, but they can have large impacts on touchier meats such as racks of ribs or salmon.

We didnt have to question if the set temperature matched the actual cooking temperature for our meals.

In testing with standalone grill thermometers, the SmokePro DLX actually stayed within 10 degrees of the set temperature most of the time. Additionally, the measured temperature at the grill surface was much closer to the readout temperature display than other smokers in this category. This told us we didnt have to question if the set temperature matched the actual cooking temperature for our meals.

Wood Pellet Usage Per Hour

For these tests, I used Camp Chef premium hardwood pellets but I would assume similar performance with other pellets.

The tests were conducted on an 80°F day.

  • Average consumption rate at 225°F: ~¾ lb per hour
  • Average consumption rate at 500°F: ~1¾ 2 lb per hour

Im happy with these results, although you should expect worse efficiency with the larger Woodwind or if cooking in cold weather.

Smokepro Bbq Sear Box

Camp Chef Sidekick 14in Pellet Grill Side Burner

Most pellet smokers arent good at searing. Unfortunately, Slide and Grill is one of them. However, Camp Chef offers the SmokePro BBQ Sear Box, an optional LP gas sear burner, that solves the problem. It can be added onto current Camp Chef SmokePro Pellet Grills by removing the right side shelf and using the existing hardware to mount the sear burner.

Now, this baby gets HOT! The 16,000 BTU burner ranges from a low of 480°F to a high of 900°F, which is fantastic for reverse seared steaks. Cook the steaks low and slow in the smoker at 225°F until the meat probe registers an internal temp of about 110°F, then slap them onto the sear box to sear and finish. Flip like youve never flipped before! And dont walk away because it wont be there long before a beautiful brown crust forms and the meats internal temp climbs to the delicious Chefs Temp medium-rare range of 130° to 135°F. Of course, if you already have a grill that hits high searing temps, this option that runs a couple hundred bucks isnt strictly necessary. But if you dont,

Our Favorite Backyard Smoker

The amazing Karubecue is the most innovative smoker in the world. The quality of meat from this machine is astonishing. At its crux is a patented firebox that burns logs above the cooking chamber and sucks heat and extremely clean blue smoke into the thermostat controlled oven. It is our favorite smoker, period.

What Are The Storage And Prep Areas Like

The Woodwind does provide a little bit of prep area in the form of a shelf, but that real estate is lost if you add the SideKick or sear box.

In my case, I had the SideKick installed. So I lost this area. You can still balance a plate or chopping board on it when not in use though.

There is a little bit of prep area on top of the pellet hopper, but it is minimal.

This means there are also no hangers for grill utensils, which to me, is disappointing. There is a shelf underneath the grill that could be used for storing a bag of pellets.

Like I mentioned in the intro, Camp Chef does offer an add-on front shelf for the Woodwind for additional prep area.

Unique Features: Ash Clean

The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX offers many attributes that are normally only available on much pricier grills. They made the product much more enjoyable to use.

The ash clean-out system made cleaning the grill and removing any stray pellets much simpler. With other smokers that lack this feature, wed need to clean the grill after about 50 hours of smoking, and that usually involves disassembly and a vacuum.

The ash clean-out system made cleaning the grill and removing any stray pellets much simpler.

Wed probably rarely use the pellet purge system, but it came in handy if and when we needed to clear the hopper and auger for transport or cleaning.

Dual Meat Probe Controller

The souped up, notched dial thermostatic controller not only provides set it and forget it cooking, it also has an LED readout that toggles between your set cooking temp and internal meat temperatures monitored by two independent, stainless steel meat probes included with SG. Youll get accustomed to the convenience of these integrated meat probes right away. In addition to notched temp settings of 175°F to 400°F degrees, the controller has Shutdown, and Feed settings as well as Lo Smoke 160°F,HI Smoke 220°F, and HI settings. The two low-temp BBQ Smoke settings allow pellets to produce extra smoke by smoldering rather than burning.

When fuses blow on most other pellet smoker controllers, changing them can take some effort. A convenient feature of the SG is the location of the fuse right on the control panel.

The Camp Chef Propane Sidekick

The SideKick provides a larger area over the Sear Box at 231 square inches. Furthermore, it produces a higher heat output over the Sear Box with 28,000 BTUs of heat from the propane burner. Something to be aware of is the specifications on the Camp Chef website while stating the SideKick can be fitted to any 24 or 36 pellet grill also state . This is not stated in the description for the Sear Box. Below is a promotional video of a Woodwind pellet grill fitted with the SideKick showing how it can be used.

The range of accessories you can fit on top of the propane SideKick includes a 14 Flat Top Griddle, 14 Delux Grill Box with closing lid and the 14 Artisan Outdoor Oven . The video below shows how to assembly and install the SideKick on to any 24 or 36 Camp Chef pellet grill . Its very straightforward, you just have to attach a couple of support brackets to the bottom of the SideKick and then screw it into the side of the pellet grill.
