Remove All Removable Parts For Cleaning

How to Clean a Gas Grill – Deep Cleaning the Weber

Once the old food has been scrubbed off, you’ll need to take all the removable parts off for cleaning. What parts you take off will differ depending on the style of grill that you have, but it often includes the grates, burner plates, and sometimes the burners themselves. If they’re very dirty, you can leave them in the soapy water to soak for a while. If they just need a scrub, you can place them in the bucket and start cleaning them with a sponge.

How To Clean Grill Grates

When cleaning your grill or smoker, the grill grates is always the first place to start. After using high heat and getting the grates nice and hot, once theyve cooled to a moderate temperature, the main goal is to scrape off any remaining residue and carbon char. This can be done in several ways, including:

  • A ball of aluminum foil: This simple scrubber method works surprisingly well. After heating up the grill, wad up a large sheet of aluminum foil into a ball, and, with a heat-proof glove, scrub the grates.
  • A block of hardwood: You can easily make your own effective grate scraper by using a hand-sized block of oak or other hardwood. Again, make sure you have a heat-proof glove for this one and then rub the wood block on the hot grill grates. After a few uses, grooves will be worn into the wood that will fit the grates perfectly.
  • Steam clean the hot grates: Using a bucket of water and a good-quality wire brush, you can create steam to help clean and scrub the grates. Dip the brush in water and scrub the hot grates with the wet brush. Then, use a paper towel to remove any remaining food bits and ensure there are no loose wire bristles on the grates.

You should periodically deep clean your grill grates as well. Remove the grates and use hot water, mild dish detergent, and a brush or stainless steel scrubby to thoroughly clean both sides. Soaking the grates for a little while in a large tub of hot water with the detergent will make the scrubbing even easier.

Discard Water And Grill Scrapings

Dump the water bins far away from your grilling and dining area. Tie up the trash bag that contains the grill scrapings and transfer it to a covered garbage can to avoid unwanted pests and critters.

Be Careful With Metal Bristle Brushes

How to Deep Clean a Grill & Cleaning Grill Grates {+ Step ...

Metal bristle brushes are a very effective tool to use when it comes to cleaning a grill or smoker, but you have to be very careful. Especially with cheaper brass bristle brushes. Sometimes, the bristles can become loose, fall out, and stick to the grill grates. This is the last thing you or anyone you are cooking for want to end up ingesting. That can quickly turn into a bad situation.

If you are using a metal bristle brush, make sure to wipe the grates with a damp paper towel or cloth to pick up any loose bristles. Some people even rub half a lemon or onion over the grates after brushing to eliminate any bristles. Look the grates over one last time before cooking just to be extra careful.

You will have less chance of stray bristles with a good quality stainless steel grill brush versus cheaper copper. But, if you do notice any bristles coming loose from your brush, dont chance more getting stuck on your grill and throw the brush away.

Start high and work your way down, scraping everything into the grease tray. Leave the burner tubes in place, but give them a light scrape as well. Optionally, use a grill grease spray at this point. Follow up with a bristle brush or steel wool. Once all the stuck-on gunk is removed, use a wet rag for a final finish to remove any remaining loose particles. Inspect and gently clean the igniters, making sure that they are clear of debris.

How to Clean Your Gas Grill | Once a Year Deep Clean

Cast iron grill grates are durable and heat evenly but can be prone to rusting. If you open your grill to see rusty cast iron grates, dont despair. Reach for the baking soda, even if your cast iron grates dont easily come out of your grill.

  • Make a paste of 1 ½ cups ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda, ¼ cup dish soap, and ¼ cup white vinegar in a small bowl. It should be a frothy liquid consistency that sticks to the grill grates.
  • Using a brush, paint the grill grates with the paste, avoiding the heating elements if this is a gas grill. Close the grill. Note: do not turn the grill on.
  • Let the paste sit for 8-12 hours or overnight.
  • Use a nylon-bristled brush or scourer sponge to remove the loosened debris and grime.
  • Use a damp sponge and warm water to wipe away any remaining residue.

Once all the rust is removed, thoroughly dry the grates and rub them with a generous amount of vegetable oil to coat them and protect from moisture. You can also turn the grill on high after coating with oil to help lock in the seasoning and be ready for your next BBQ.

How to Clean Your Grill While You Sleep

After youve cooked the last burger of the season, thoroughly clean your grill before storing it for the winter. Remove the grates, burner hoods, and grease pan, and scrub them with hot, soapy water and a plastic scour pad. Do the same inside the firebox and lid. Thoroughly rinse and dry all parts before reassembling. Also, remove the battery from the igniter before storing your grill long-term so it doesnt corrode.

Even if you follow the strictest cleaning and maintenance schedule, you will have to replace some parts on your grill as it ages. The burner hoods and cooking grates in particular take a lot of abuse and arent meant to last forever. My dad replaced these parts on his 17-year-old Weber Genesis four to five times over the years.
