Prepping And Marinating Beef Ribs For Grilling

Prepping any meat before grilling is essential to get the best results. Here is how you can prepare your beef ribs before grilling:

  • Remove the beef ribs from the packaging.
  • Wash and rinse it out well. You can soak it in some vinegar water for a while to clean and tenderize it simultaneously.
  • Drain the water, and if it is a full rack, you can cut it up into pieces if you choose to. .
  • Pat the ribs dry to remove excess water.
  • Rub your marinade well on one side of the ribs, then turn it over and rub the marinade on the other side.

In your marinade, acidic ingredients such as vinegar, lemon juice, coke, etc., will help to tenderize your meat slightly quicker, making it soft and juicy.

That works incredibly well during grilling because the ribs can dry out quickly on an open flame .

The Best Pork Ribs On A Gas Grill

My favorite meat ever will always be pork. Always. From ham, pork chops, pulled pork to delicious pork ribs like this recipe I am sharing today. I grew up near pig farms so it’s always been a familiar and comforting food to me. However, I had no idea, until recently that one-third of all the pork raised in the U.S. comes from Iowa! I have a good pork farming friend in Iowa. She has taught me a lot about how her modern family farm works.

Choosing Ribs For The Grill

There are four different cuts of pork ribs , and any will work. However, the easiest cut is baby back ribs, which are cut to cook evenly, so youll have great results every time.

Personally, I like spareribs which are a bit meatier but slightly harder to cut apart after cooking. If you go with a meatier cut like this one, you might need to be on the upper end for timing on each step in the recipe to make sure the ribs have enough time to break down.

Do You Wrap Ribs In Foil When Grilling

How to BBQ the Perfect Ribs (Glazed Jalapeño Mango Ribs)

You should wrap your ribs in foil for the last 30-40 minutes of cooking. I like to slather mine with BBQ sauce and then wrap them. You should also cover the ends of the ribs with foil if they start to get well-done during the cooking process.

Covering them after they have been on the grill for a few hours will then help to lock in that moisture and savory grill flavor while the ribs finish cooking.

How Do You Boil Ribs First

The first step to boiling ribs is to prepare your ingredients and equipment. This typically involves trimming the ribs of any excess fat, seasoning them with salt and pepper, and adding any other desired spices or herbs. Once your ingredients are prepped, fill a large pot with enough water to cover the ribs and bring it to a boil over high heat. Add the ribs, reduce the heat to low, and simmer until they are tender and cooked through. You can test for doneness by checking to see if a fork slides in and out of the ribs easily, or by checking the internal temperature with a meat thermometer. Finally, be sure to drain off any excess fat before serving your boiled ribs.

  • Remove the membrane on the ribs.
  • Season all sides of your ribs with your rub on top a piece of foil.
  • Place the ribs on the foil on a cookie sheet. Make sure they have enough room and arent crowded. Dont try to cram multiple slabs on one. If youre using Baby Back Ribs, place the bone side up. If youre using Country Style Ribs you should place them on their side.
  • Tent your ribs with the foil and make sure the tented part doesnt touch the ribs.
  • Place the ribs on the center rack of your oven and bake for 2 ½ to 3 hours. Total time will depend on the size of your ribs.
  • Remove the ribs from the oven, open the tin foil and flip them so the bone side is now down and the meaty side is up. Slather them with barbecue sauce on both sides.
  • Cook, uncovered for another 30 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and rest 10 minutes. Dont skip this step! It helps to keep the meat moist, tender and improves the texture.

Why You Should Cook Your Ribs Past Done & How To Know When They’re Ready

As you already know from many of my Science of Barbecue articles smoking meat is a technique that slowly melts fat and relaxes the collagen in meat allowing water into the muscle fibers creating gelatin. This process is called rendering and it is the main reason why you should cook your ribs past their done temperature. If you are cooking pork ribs past the temperature of doneness, how do you know when the ribs are ready?

How To Grill Beef Ribs In The Oven

Grilling beef ribs in the oven follows the same process as grilling on open flames or a gas grill.

With the oven, you will need to preheat it to around 225°F before placing your beef ribs inside.

Put the meat on the middle rack and allow it to cook for 1½-2 hours, turning a couple of times in between.

You can cover it with foil to ensure it doesn’t dry out and remove the foil in the last 20-30 minutes to brown.

Another way to give that glazed, seared, and charred effect is by turning the oven to the broiler setting, which comes closest to grilling.

Youll want to start by removing the membrane found on the bone-showing side of the ribs, if its there. Sometimes its removed already. I dont always bother with this step. However, if you really want the flavors to penetrate the meat, and if you want the ribs to be extra-tender, you really should do it.

After that, I cook the ribs low and slow. Theyre seasoned with a rub and then wrapped in foil. Put them on to a pan and cook them for 2-3 hours, depending on the type of ribs and on how tender you like them. Note that you can alternatively season the raw ribs with the rub, wrap them in foil, and then refrigerate them for 2-24 hours to really let the flavors of the rub penetrate. But I find that this isnt really necessary.

Once the ribs have finished cooking in the oven, let them cool on the counter until you can more easily handle them. Then cut them into individual rib portions, and sauce them up.

What Does Soaking Ribs In Coke Do

Soaking ribs in Coke is a popular method for tenderizing and infusing flavor into this hearty cut of meat. The soda helps to break down the tough connective tissues in the ribs, making them more tender and flavorful.

To try this method, simply submerge your ribs in a large container of Coke for at least 2 hours before cooking. You can also add a few tablespoons of your favorite dry rub seasoning to the Coke to give your ribs an extra flavor boost.

When you’re ready to cook, simply remove the ribs from the Coke and proceed with your recipe as usual. So if you’re looking for a delicious and easy way to prepare mouthwatering ribs, give soaking them in Coke a try!

When youre ready to barbecue the ribs, place the rack meat side down over direct heat for 10 to 15 minutes, then continue to cook over low, indirect heat in a smoker, if you have one for anywhere from another hour to as many as eight hours, depending on the size of the ribs and what your specific recipe calls for. Barbecue aficionados tend to agree that low and slow is the way to go with ribs, but they have little consensus about just how low and how slow, so play around with your grill this summer.

    How To Braise Ribs

Braising ribs is similar to boiling ribs except you are using a smaller quantity of more flavorful liquid. This is a preferred way to infuse your ribs with more flavor because the liquid in which they cook is usually a lot more concentrated than the liquid you use to boil ribs. Again, the skys the limit as far as what you can add to your braise for flavor, but many people simply slow-cook their ribs in barbecue sauce.

You can braise your ribs on the stovetop by bringing the barbecue sauce to a simmer over medium heat, adding the ribs, covering them, reducing the heat to low and cooking for a few hours. Check every hour or so for tenderness. This is an excellent opportunity to use a slow cooker, too.

Alternatively, you can braise them in the oven. The advantage of this is that in an oven, the heat is cooking the ribs from all sides, making for much more even cooking. As well, you can cook more ribs in the oven than you can on a stove top simply because you have more space. You also have the option of precooking a whole slab of ribs rather than cutting the rack down into smaller pieces, which can be necessary for stovetop cooking

You can either use a large roasting pan or even buy a disposable aluminum roasting pan to cook enough ribs for a crowd. Heres how:

  • Center your oven rack and preheat the oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • To a large roasting pan, add your ribs and toss with seasonings and braising liquid or barbecue sauce.
