Can You Build An Alcove To Custom

Yes, this is going to be the best way to convert your grill into a built-in. However, youll need to make sure a few things are in order first:

    • If your built-in grill has folding sides, youll probably want to remove them. Even if they are folded down, leaving the folding sides on can cause unattractive gaps between the grill and its surroundings.
    • Check your manual to determine the recommended clearance around your built-in grill. Even if youre building a non-combustible structure such as block and stone, you might not have the recommended airflow needed for your grill to work correctly.
    • If you are using a stone veneer, you want to place the grill after the veneer is up. Otherwise, its possible to veneer around the grill just to seal it in!

Can I Build My Grill Into A Structure

The landscape of the American backyard has transformed over the years, and now more than ever, the popularity of the outdoor kitchen is on the rise. Rather than having a free-standing grill, many people prefer to build them into a structure.

So, can a Weber grill be built into a structure?

The answer is some Weber grills can, and some cannot. We make two models that are designed to be built-in.

Both of these models are available in propane or natural gas versions, and are meant to be used exclusively in built-in structures. The island structures in the photos are not included, and meant for visualization purposes only.

So, why shouldnt other Weber grills be built-in?

The answer is because special designing and testing go into making it possible for a grill to built-in, and there are ventilation concerns that need to be considered.

The Summit S-460 and S-660 are the only models that have had these issues addressed. If any other Weber model is built-in we do not know how it might behave, or if it will be safe to use. Its for these reasons that if you do choose to build-in other models the warranty on the grill is voided.

If youre looking for a built-in Weber model, the Summit S-460 and Summit S-660 are the way to go.

    Plan Ahead To Prevent Fires

Heres how to ensure your new cook center wont endanger youor your home:

Grill: Position it at least 10 feet from combustible materials, such as wood siding, deck rails, and tree branches, and build in storage for a fire extinguisher.

Gas: Check the line for leaks. Mix 1 part dish soap to 2 parts water. Brush the solution on the hose and connector fittings. Turn on the gas, but dont light the grill. If new bubbles form, you have a leak. Tighten the fittings if that fails, replace the hose and fittings.

Electric: GFCI outlets are required its also good to put the kitchen on its own circuit, one thats easily accessible via the control panel in your house. Use only extension cords, fans, and lights that have Underwriters Laboratories outdoor ratings, because they stand up to UV exposure and extreme temperatures.

Never Install Cooking And Cooling Appliances Next To One Another

Did you know you should plan your zones when designing your outdoor kitchen to separate your cooking and cooling appliances? Its true! . Cooling and cooking units put off a lot of heat if installed adjacently, keeping their internal mechanisms cool may spiral into premature failure. Is space an issue? Leave at least 1 foot between your refrigeration unit and any grills or side burners, barring them apart within the island structure. This keeps your appliances happy, ensuring that they can properly ventilate and last longer.

Yes, you can, and I have done this for clients. Youll want to make sure of a few things first:

    • if your built-in grill has folding sides to act as a work surface youll probably want to remove them. Leaving them on, even folded down, causes some big unsightly gaps between the grill and the surround.

    • If youre doing stone veneer, wheel the grill in AFTER the veneer is up. Ive known people who veneered around the grill and ended up sealing it in.

You should also think ahead to the next grill you think youll want and design the cutout accordingly. Most consumer grills in that sub-$1,000 price range only last so long. You wont want to have to redo a bunch of masonry when it comes time to upgrade!
