Grilling, in general, is an excellent method to prepare your food because it can cook for higher temperatures, with less oil and grease. If you are grilling meat, it helps in releasing fat and reduces the calorie count. But unlike meat, shrimps are a bit more delicate, especially when they are precooked.
How Long Do You Grill Shrimp On Skewers
Shrimp cook very quickly, so its imperative to watch your shrimp to make sure they dont overcook. Shrimp typically take about 2-3 minutes per side on the grill. Youll be able to tell when the shrimp are done because theyll turn pink and opaque.
You can use an outdoor grill, grill pan, or broiler to make these shrimp skewers. I typically use my outdoor grill, but when the weather isnt nice or I dont feel like firing up the grill, I cook the shrimp on the stove top in my favorite grill pan.
I use the largest shrimp I can find for this recipe. Shrimp are labeled based on their size count, or the number of shrimp you get per pound. These shrimp are the jumbo size shrimp, which are 16-20 per pound. You can go smaller if need be and the recipe will still be delicious.
Whenever I post shrimp recipes, I always get asked if the shrimp tails should be left on or removed. I typically keep the tails on when Im looking for a nicer presentation. Its really a matter of personal preference whether you leave the tails on or remove them before grilling.

If preparing the marinade ahead of time, dont toss in the shrimp until 20 minutes before ready to cook to ensure they are not over-marinated !

Do You Need To Thaw The Shrimp Before Grilling Them
Shrimp can be cooked and eaten lukewarm, or cooked and then cooled, as in a shrimp salad. But before you start cooking, the shrimp must be thawed first. And the way you thaw them can affect their final texture. Let steep for another 10 to 20 minutes and the shrimp should be completely thawed and still cold.
Prepping Shrimp For The Grill
There are two great debates when cooking shrimp: shell or no shell and vein or no vein. Each has its advantages, and there is no right or wrong answer. Depending on the shrimp you buy, they may already be deveined and shelled with only the tail left.
While most Americans prefer shelled shrimp without the vein, whole shrimp are preferred in much of the world. Leaving the shrimp in the shell makes preparing them fast and prevents them from drying out on the grill. Your guests will have to remove the shells while eating.
Without the shell and vein, shrimp are easier to skewer. This is also the better choice if you’re going to use a marinade because it allows the extra flavor to get inside the shrimp, which will have more impact.
You must remove the shell to devein a shrimp. When shelling the shrimp, leave the tail because it makes them easier to eat by handit’s sort of a small handle. To devein shrimp, use a small pairing knife or deveiner to cut a slit along the back and remove the black, stringy vein.

How To Put Shrimp On Skewers
The best way to put shrimp on skewers is to start at the thickest part of the shrimp and thread no more than 5-6 on each skewer. This ensures the shrimp adhere to the skewer without overcrowding.
Here are a few helpful tips:
- Metal or Wood: Metal skewers are a great option if you already have them on hand, but I actually prefer wooden skewers as it adds to their charcoal flavor. If using wooden skewers, make sure to soak skewers in water for at least 20 minutes to prevent them from disintegrating.
- With Shell or Without Shell: I find the shrimp are easier to eat without the shell, but with the tail still intact. That being said, you can leave the shell on to lock in those essential shrimp juices, but remove the vein. Check out Easy Shrimp Marinade for more info on how to do so.
How To Grill Clams
According to Smith, the cooking method for clams really depends on the type of clam you buy. For this grill guide, the chef goes with a common variety called littleneck clams, which home grillers can treat pretty similarly to oysters.
And, just like with oysters, discard any clams with open shells and don’t force open any shells that do not open on their own while cooking those should be tossed.

- To devein shrimp, use a paring knife to make a slit longways along the back of the shrimp. Run the shrimp under running water and use your finger to remove the “vein” . You can devein before or after cooking, but if you dont want your guests to devein the shrimp themselves, unshell the shrimp and devein before cooking.
- Peeled or unpeeled? It depends on your recipe. If youre using hot, dry cooking methods like baking or grilling, leaving the shells on to retain flavor and moisture. We’ve included peeled and unpeeled options in the recipes below.
- Keep the shells! Shrimp shells are loaded with flavor and can be used to make broths and other bases.
