Camp Chef Smokepro Xt 24

How to Cook Prime Rib on the Camp Chef Pellet Grill and Smoker

The next model up in the SmokePro range is the XT 24. You may not think it provides any more cooking area over the SE 24 . However, the XT 24 provides 570 square inches. The reason being, the SE 24 only has a single rack whereas the XT 24 benefits from a lower and upper cooking rack which accounts for the additional cooking area. However, its not just the cooking area which is increased over the SE 24 as you can see in the video below.

The SmokePro XT 24 has a larger cooking area and upgraded control panel with meat probe connection not found on the SE 24: Video Campchef.com

The support legs on the SmokePro XT 24 pellet grill are much thicker/sturdier than those featured on the SE 24. While the SE 24 and XT 24 feature the same 18lb pellet hopper as you can see from the video above, the control panel has been upgraded. The controller on the XT 24 features a digital temperature readout and external meat probe connection.

While this grill still does not feature direct flame broiling found on other models below its a nice little step-up in cooking performance over the SE 24 for only a small increase in price. The XT 24 is also offered in just black or with a bronze hopper and grill lid.

Yoder Ys480s Pellet Grill

Let’s be honest, if you are serious about barbecue and are looking for a pellet grill, this is probably the cooker for you. Yoder is legendary for the quality of its products. This, the smallest of their line runs $1,579USD and has a huge cooking chamber for its size. This is a serious, heavy grill. Well, to be honest, while a good grill, this is a great smoker. There are larger Yoder grills than this one, but for most people, this is all you need. Yoder also has great WiFi technology. If you buy this grill, tell them I sent you.

The grill has several interesting and modern features, especially the Slide and Grill technology, which enables you to expose your food to direct flames by activating the grill mode, giving you access to up to 650F of direct heat. There are plenty of convenience features as well, including an easy ash cleanout system, a bright digital display easily visible under a bright sun, and sear box compatibility.

Camp Chef Sg24 Overview And Specs

The SG24 is at the mid-end of Camp Chefs pellet grill offering, which as it turns out, their best selling pellet grill line. At the bottom of the price range, the SmokePro XT models provide basic functionality. While the SmokePro SG series features the latest and greatest in terms of features and technology. Camp Chef also has the Woodwind line of grills, which are usually a bit higher in price and have more convenience features and premium construction.

Overall, I feel that the SG24 represents the sweet spot between features and price. This mid-range model can be versatile and the newly updated feature set provides all the bells and whistles people might want from a modern pellet grill. It competes directly with the Traeger Pro series but at a more economical price.

Tech And Extra Features

Camp Chef SmokePro DLX Pellet Grill in Black

Some Camp Chef models, such as the Woodwind Wi-Fi 36, come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to control and monitor the grill from your smartphone. Built-in tech like this can make grilling a breeze.;

Another feature to look out for is Camp Chefs signature Slide and Grill technology that allows for direct flame cooking. This feature is essentially what turns your pellet grill from a smoker into a normal open-flame grill.;;

Pit Boss Pellet Grill Pros

Pit Boss offers some of the most affordable pellet grill options while sacrificing minimal quality in construction. The company also offers an industry-leading 5-year warranty on all of their pellet grills. Pit Boss features three categories of pellet grills: the Pit Boss Series, the Navigator Series and the Sportsman Series.

Camp Chef Smokepro Sgx

This is a luxury model in both the pricing and sizing categories. The unit features no fewer than 1236 square inches of cooking space, with an oven capacity of 7000 cubic inches. That gives it the distinction of being the largest model on our list, and by quite a wide margin. If youre looking for a pellet smoker that can roast two 15-pound turkeys at once, then this could be the right unit for you.

Like many SmokePro offerings, this smoker comes equipped with dual probes for recording both the grill temperature and the internal meat temp. The technology is slightly more advanced here, offering a dual LED readout display along with the automatic ignition. In addition to the patented ash control system, the 22-pound pellet hopper has an automatic cleanout feature as well. The chimney is adjustable, so you can decide how much smoke flavor you want added to your dish.

While I find the design of the SmokePro SGX to be a tad on the bulky side, there are four wheels attached to the legs to make it more maneuverable. As with the PG24MZG model, I was taken aback to learn that this model wasnt Wi-Fi compatible. Also, the digital readouts become increasingly erratic as the temperature rises above 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

This mid-sized pellet smoker flaunts a 697 sq. inches grilling location, which suffices for your everyday family usage.

In spite of its 8-in-1 adaptive feature, 700E does far better at slow-moving and low temperatures. Its included waterproof cover as well as two meat probes make it a terrific value for your buck.

Cooking a pizza on a pellet grill: Camp Chef Woodwind

By: Max Good

This mid-sized pellet smoker is comparable in capacity to Traegers popular Lil Tex Elite, but much more sophisticated and easy to find for well below its list price. Its one of the few pellet smokers weve seen with;an ash removal system. Although pellets dont create much ash, they need regular cleaning, which is a pain on most other designs because the greasy grates and drip pan must be removed to get at the fire pot where the pellets burn. Camp Chefs solution is a trap door under the fire pot. The bottom slides back letting ash drop into a removable cup, shown upper left. You still have to clean out the bottom of the smoke box periodically, but you dont have to worry about a clogged firepot that could impair the smokers performance.

Camp Chef is a popular American grill brand, producing a range of fire pits, cast iron cookware, flat-top grills, smokers, gas grills, outdoor cooking stations, and pellet grills.

Based in Cache Valley, Utah, the company makes products popular with outdoor enthusiasts and backyard cooks. Although an American company, youve probably asked the question, is Camp Chef made in the USA?

As with many traditional brands, manufacturing is now outsourced, but the quality remains high.

Camp Chef Designs and Markets Grills Made in China

Camp Chef grills and cooking stations are made in China using parts and materials sourced internationally. Design and production are overseen by Camp Chef in the USA.

Manufacturing in China allows for competitive pricing and access to state-of-the-art factory facilities. Camp Chef stands behind all their products and theres a high level of quality control.

When asking is Camp Chef made in the USA, its important to consider that many of the most popular brands also outsource their manufacturing to China. Some examples include:

  • Coleman One of the largest producers of camping goods and grills.
  • Lodge A marketer of cast iron cookware.
  • Bayou Classic A popular cookware and cooking station brand.

Chinese-made goods can come with some stigma, but its often unjustified. Some of the best grills and cookware products are made in China.

What Is A Pellet Grill

A pellet grill is an all-in-one outdoor appliance, either box or barrel-shaped. It combines grilling, smoking, cooking and baking into a single appliance. It uses specially made wooden pellets as its fuel source but is powered by electricity.

Most every pellet grill can be easy to use, given its built-in technology and temperature controls, and some even have pre-programmed cycles.

While a pellet grill can also be used as a smoker, some pellet smokers cannot be used to grill.

A pellet grill can cost as little as $350 and up to $3,000 depending on size, construction materials and added features.

The key difference between this and the full Woodwind above is the lack of a searing station. Otherwise, the Camp Chef SmokePro DLX is quite similar. This particular model;is the same size as the non-SG Woodwind, giving you 570 square inches of cooking area.

Again, as far as features, temperature control, and even looks go, this is pretty similar to the Woodwind. You get a shelf that sits where the searing station should go, but otherwise youll notice a few differences in practice.

Pit Boss Camp Chef Or Traeger Pellet Grill: Which One Should I Buy

Camp Chef Woodwind SG 24 Pellet Grill

Pellet grills recently have become one of most popular outdoor appliances, but a quick online search on which pellet grill to buy can yield more confusion than enthusiasm, given the vast amount of pellet grills available at varying price points.

Three of the biggest manufacturers of pellet grills are Pit Boss, Camp Chef and Traeger. While these three brands share the science of pellet grilling, they do have their differences.

Slide And Clean For Easy Ash Removal

Slide and Grill was likely inspired by Camp Chefs unique and useful slide and clean ash removal system. Although pellet smokers dont create much ash, they need regular cleaning, which is a pain with most other designs because the greasy grates and drip pan must be removed to get at the fire pot where the pellets burn .

Camp Chefs solution is a trap door under the fire pot.

The bottom slides back letting ash drop into a removable cup, shown below.

You still have to clean out the bottom of the smoke box periodically, but you dont have to worry about a clogged firepot that could impair the smokers performance.

After we fired up SG the first time, the ash removal slider was suddenly difficult to move. Camp Chefs customer service was aware of the problem. The Chinese manufacturing facility that makes SmokePro SG applies a coating to prevent rust while the unit is in transit or in storage. This coating can melt down into the ash removal slider and gunk it up. We were advised to remove the ash cup and smack the unfinished metal trap door vigorously with a hammer from underneath to loosen it up. Camp Chef claims this only occurs on a small percentage of units.

Runner Up Traeger Pro 575 Wood Pellet Grill

If you want the biggest brand with all the latest features, and your budget can stretch, the Traeger Pro is a great option.

While its become trendy to trash Traeger lately, they have made a bunch of improvements to the Pro models in 2019 that make it well worth considering

The Pro now comes with WiFi for remote control and monitoring of your grill.

The new Pro also addresses a few common issues with older Traegers. Namely poor heating speed and difficulty maintaining temperatures.

The new D2 direct drive uses a brushless DC motor to achieve higher torque at lower RPM. What does this actually mean? Basically, the motor can turn the pellet auger faster, which lets you get more fuel into the firepot for faster and hotter cooking.

These features used to only come with the top-of-the-range Timberline series, and they make the Pro a great buy in our opinion.

You can choose the Pro with either 575 or 780 square inches of cooking space.

The extra space will cost you an additional $200 so think about how many people you need to cook for and this could be an area where you can save some money.

You can also choose between black or bronze color schemes.

You get one temperature probe that lets you monitor your food temperature from the grill interface or via the Traeger app.

Camp Chef Smoke Pro SG Grill/Smoker

Its elegance is not the only favorable thing about Camp Chefs SmokePro SG. This smoker has a decent cooking area of 811 square inches, which is subdivided into two racks. It entails that you can cook at two different temperatures simultaneously. The expanding chamber is like an icing on top as it lets you cook more.;

The hopper has a good 22-lb capacity, so you wont have to refill it with pellets even after grilling for several hours. This Camp Chef product also has a PID controller that displays the temperature and a knob that lets you set temperature at +/- 5 increments for precision cooking.

  • Has a max temperature of 650°F
  • Priced at around $700
  • Works better as a grill than a smoker

Furthermore, the Camp Chefs SmokePro SG has two meat probes, a menu dial, and wireless capability, all thanks to the Camp Chef App. The slide-and-grill technology makes it easy to cook directly over the flame, while the patented ash cleanout system comes with a removable cup for a quick disposal of the ashes.

So, if having more cooking options and faster cleanup process matters for you, this Camp Chef needs all your attention.;

Traeger Vs Camp Chef Pellet Grills Under $2000

In the $1,000 to $2,000 price bracket in the Traeger vs Camp Chef debate, this is where the two brands offerings are not really comparable. Camp Chef does offer the Woodwind WiFi 36 with either the Sear Box/SideKick, but thats it. As of this moment, the Woodwind WiFi 36 is Camp Chefs highest specification pellet grill. Traeger actually offers four pellet grill models within this price bracket, two Ironwood models and two Timberline models . You can read more about the Traeger Ironwood and Timberline models through the links above.

The Traeger Ironwood 885 is commonly found at a price close to $1,500: Image Traegergrills.com

In terms of cooking area, the Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 36 at 1,236 square inches is competitive to even the largest Traeger Timberline 1300 with 1,300 square inches of cooking area. However, as I stated above, you should never compare pellet grills/smokers purely on the size of their cooking area. So what additional features do the Traeger Ironwood/Timberline ranges have that the Pro Series or Camp Chef Woodwind doesnt?

The Traeger Timberline 1300 costs just under $2,000: Image Traegergrills.comThe Traeger Timberline range features a full stainless steel internal cooking chamber and two stainless steel exterior shelves: Image Traegergrills.com
